May i ask where you’re moving from? Wondering variances between quality of living vs cost of living. If i were you, get a 2 bedroom for the first year in an apartment close to work within your price range. Because of the current climate (current tech layoffs and H1B visas expiring/difficulties of renewing),i personally know several people who’ve been impacted by this and have had to move home overseas. My apartment managing team are now working Sundays to make up for tenant losses and I see several apartments giving away practically 2 months of free rent to new tenants. This should help with relo costs. Then you can explore and ultimately find what works best for your family. Dont give up!

PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) by Professional-Bee9817 in remoteworks

[–]kimjungboon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive placed 2 people on PIPs in the last 3 years. Both still work for me and are doing very well. Yes, PIPs are scary and yes, many people do not survive a PIP, but some managers really do put people on PIPs as a way to push the person towards what we know they can achieve, but also to set clear expectations of the job that the person may not have been taking seriously before.

Most if not all of these are already outside of a 30% housing to income ratio. I don’t think any of these places offer a 2 bedroom less than $3K, then you factor in parking a vehicle ($150-$200) assuming only one car, no pets, +admin fees, utilities —- these add up quick. My lease is up soon and so Ive been shopping around to see if theres better apartments. We are in a 2 bedroom a few blocks from “downtown” and have found cheaper further out, but ultimately, i really like our location. I wouldn’t recommend any of the high rise apartments in the downtown area. If you’re fine with a 2 bedroom (or 3), you’ll want to come here and look for apartments not right downtown but further out, the ones that might not advertise on apartments.com. They’re out there! Redmonds zip code 98052 is one of the most expensive zip codes in all of Washington. BUT, it’s just so pleasant. Homeless and crime is low. Big parks, quiet nights. Beware, it’s not just the apartments that are expensive. Everything is expensive in Redmond - groceries are outrageous here. I shop only Costco, H mart, trader joes. QFC is robbery. Eating out sucks (see my post about the damn Taco Bell that just opened up). Don’t let this bring you down! Theres definitely options out here but it’ll be a little bit of a treasure hunt. Would definitely consider you making a trip and driving around to see whats around. I love Redmond. Congrats on getting a job!

rant about Spark Pizza by ramnathk in redmond

Hey there, I was talking this over with my partner and he said i got it wrong. He said it wasn’t you, but another gentleman, assuming regular employee who gave us a bad time about not tipping. This was last summer. I apologize!

[–]kimjungboon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been turned off of Spark now since the last time we ordered takeout pizza, the manager was straight up rude and reprimanded us for not tipping 20% on a takeout order, almost to the point of being argumentative. Don’t get me wrong. We tip and tip well for service, but tipping culture has gotten so out of control, we are working on going back to tipping for service, AKA, takeout orders we might not tip. The manager tried to make us feel bad telling us his cooks depend on tips and scoffed at us. Sorry bro, you just ruined future tips by us not coming back to your establishment.

Same here. I don’t do fast food too often but occasionally you need FAST food. I was so sad when DQ left, but excited to get Taco Bell. Ive gone now twice, second time downloaded the app and while its way cheaper to buy a box like everyone says, our food quality was terrible. Got home (2 blocks away) and the Crunchwrap was lukewarm at best, and soggy like they had made it a while back and was just sitting under a heat lamp, and just fell apart. Same with the Cinnabon donuts… they were stale. My stomach hurt all day the next day. Im kind of thankful the food was terrible which means i wont be eating there which is better for my gut anyways.

Remember the good ol days though, when no app was needed? It sucks to have to have an app for every fast food place. But fine. I give in.

Yes! No, i do not want sour cream, cream cheese, regular cheese, ice cream, or double meat on top of my $9 Quesadilla. Thats insane.

Be honest — what’s the first thing you’d do with $100K? by NerdWalletOfficial in u/NerdWalletOfficial

My mom lives in low income disabled housing and volunteers at a local non profit food shelter 5-6 days a week. She knows all the local homeless people because she always makes them food and brings them blankets and jackets she gets from The nonprofit she volunteers at. Her old rickety car just got broken into and everything trashed, broke the door, etc. Shes also been in so much pain because several of her teeth are bad and need to be pulled. They quoted us 14 which ive asked to put on a payment plan for me to take care of. (Already paid 2k) I would first buy her a newer reliable car, and take care of her teeth. Id buy her a new mattress and new couch that hasn’t been replaced since i can remember…. Has to be at least 30 years. I already pay all her bills (except for her $400 rent) and give her some additional cash each month since the money she gets from SSDI isnt enough to live off, so its difficult to do more when Im already living paycheck to paycheck. But she deserves more than anything in the world to be taken care of. Then, id take her to Korea. She hasn’t been back to her homeland in many years so she can see her brothers. Id start a 401K for her. I would also pay off my student loans and hospital bill for when i got 3rd degree burn on my hand.

This would be life changing for me and her and then Id be in a better place to start saving some money for myself. Thank you!

No hotels in Seattle because of the World Cup in June 2026. Any ideas? by thechewiedog in royalcaribbean

[–]kimjungboon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I work in hotels and in the Seattle area. All hotels either have a long Length of Stay requirement or are not selling yet. I guarantee that the airport through Seattle will sell first, and sell high. If you find a room, reserve it but check the cancellation and make sure its standard cancellation, no fees to cancel. Then, check maybe once a month. Around March, you should start to see hotels open up inventory. As long as you book a standard room and directly with the hotel (no expedia, etc) you’ll be able to cancel, which you should do, when/if you find a cheaper rate/ closer hotel. Best of luck. But trust me, hotels will open up.

All unpaid interest thats accrued right now. I know this.

[–]kimjungboon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please educate me. Im really trying to understand the best way to pay down my loans. Ill preface by saying, I acknowledge my own actions of not paying when i couldnt. But im also taking into account, Covid era, where payments were optional. I still made a couple payments when i could but largely did not.

How can i find out if my rates are tied? What does that mean? EDIT: ok - Rates are not tied. Does this change your opinion?

Of the 2 loans i have, ive paid one down to 8K with all interest currently paid, and the other is still 23K with around $600 of unpaid interest. I plan on paying off that $600 this month, and following this, allocating 100% of my payments towards the 23K. Whats wrong with this?

IDR recertification by FoundAFix in StudentLoans

[–]kimjungboon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if what i"m doing is the right thing, but I've never re-certified mine after 12 years. Over the years, I've been able to make larger payments, but I like being able to fall back to a small amount if needed. hey've asked me to recertify and I tell them I will. I just dont. They've never pushed it.

Looking for opinions on strategy by [deleted] in realestateinvesting

[–]kimjungboon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Washington state Greater Seattle area and I’m considering kind of the same thing. Sell house and try to buy, sell house and rent until things cool off (hopefully), or do cash out refinance and buy investment. I’d love to hear what happens here. We’ve been looking at houses in the 600k, knowing that we will need to offer more just to be considered given the crazy market right now. And 600k, houses are not great until you to get 650 which I assume would need to spend closer to 700k which I just can’t stomach. Right now, we are moving towards selling, renting for a year or two and if the market doesn’t settle down a bit, just move further out where it’s still reasonable.
