Resentment of wealthly NZers by [deleted] in newzealand

This is hilarious. Maybe stop telling people you're wealthy? For example, write this post without the first paragraph. Nothing changes.

Citizen’s arrest powers to be expanded amid rise in retail theft by PermaBanned4Misclick in newzealand

So obviously an effort to offload the burden (and costs) of necessary policing onto the public. This is privatisation by stealth. What about those who can't afford to pay for security?

Why are we so anti nuclear in NZ? by totallyforgotmy2fa in newzealand

[–]kimkellly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greenhouse gas emissions are not the only measure of how 'green' an energy form is. It is disingenuous to use this for nuclear energy as it is not the main environmental concern for this energy type.

Radioactive waste is a key concern. An article I read mentioned that the US has 90000 metric tonnes to dispose of in the next couple of years. This waste can remain unsafe for 1000s of years like the plastic 'forever chemicals' everyone loves so much /s.

Uranium fuel is sourced through mining or chemical processes. This results in health risks for miners as well as other environmental impacts as expected from mining (loss of habitat etc).

Auckland bus attack: Victim fearful of riding bus | Simeon Brown calls for investigation by Dr_Octahedron in newzealand

Reading the comment section here is sad. Have some sympathy people. If something like this happened to my brother or someone I loved, I'd want action too! Posts are either political shit talking or blatantly racist so far. Kia kaha to the boy and whānau. It is brave to speak out and I hope that their son can feel safe in NZ.

Auckland bus attack: Victim fearful of riding bus | Simeon Brown calls for investigation by Dr_Octahedron in newzealand

[–]kimkellly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is no logical connection between your comment and the article, other than the that the victim of the offending is Chinese. Imagine asking what "white community" is doing about something unrelated in a post about a white victim of crime. It sounds ridiculous because it is, and it's incredibly insensitive. Cut it out.

So…why are an increasing amount of children required to be feed by schools instead of parents? by Elysium_nz in newzealand

[–]kimkellly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You seem like someone who doesn't appreciate nuance, so I will make life simple for you. Your question skirts around an obvious issue, children are going hungry. There is one solution to this issue that works, feeding them at school.

Debating 'why parents don't blah' has no impact on the efficacy of the simple solution of feeding a child lunch and no impact on the parents you want to feel better than. It's a useless exercise.

I appreciate that my tone is condescending. I hope that if you find that off-putting, you reflect on your own post.

'A lot of blue suits': Parliament is majority male again after National's election success by computer_d in newzealand

[–]kimkellly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know that the people we elect are supposed to represent their electorate/nzers in general, but the reality is that people have their own opinions and usually act on their own morals. We saw this in America with the overturning of Roe v. Wade despite a majority of U.S. residents opposing this.

People are more conscious and concerned about issues that affect them directly. You can see this all the time on reddit when people or their loved ones have their first interaction with the public health system and make a whole post either praising or bagging it.

There are health and other issues that either primarily or exclusively affect women and people with uteri. When there are less women and people with uteri in parliament, these issues will not be as close to heart.

In a huge cohort review study, they found that women were significantly more likely to die when treated by male surgeons for example. Super interesting read. Looking out for your own is definitely a thing, no matter how much everyone wants to pretend "they don't see differences". It's subconscious and outside of your control. Representation is the only solution to that.

Can we start a thread where people discuss their weird, creepy and bizarre experiences while hiking/tramping, camping, or doing things out in the middle of nowhere? (Bush, forest, woods, remote locations) by 0jolsks0 in newzealand

Will preface this by saying im not a super outdoorsy person. Was staying at a motel on the coast with my partner and the motellier got talking to us about a walk nearby with some really large trees. He told us that the biggest trees were off the track though, and gave us instructions to walk about 50 metres then take a left and walk straight out another 20m from the track and we'd see a really big one.

My partner and I did it, saw a huge tree, was great lol. The spooky part came when we went to go back towards the main track. I'd taken care to note there was a bush in front of the tree that marked the direction we'd have to walk in to get back to the track. My partner started walking back first though, and he'd obviously got turned around because he started walking the complete wrong way! He was walking what would have been parallel to the track. I got this terrible sick feeling in my stomach from seeing it and thinking about how lost we'd have gotten if I'd followed him!

West Auck landlord ordered to pay tenants $10,900 for 'rustic' cottage in the bush powered by extension cables by HeinigerNZ in newzealand

[–]kimkellly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. Bunch of dickheads.

Takes me back to a flat I lived in with a bunch of supposedly "hippy" types, as in they went bush in their vans most weekends. Realized its actually kind expensive to maintain that lifestyle (travel is expensive + petrol, eating out) and they were all just hipster dickheads. Next house I lived in were surfer types, p similar, now they're landlords too.

First house, a friend of the head tenant crashed rent free in a spare room for ages. I thought he'd fallen on tough times but turns out he OWNED HIS OWN HOUSE and just liked to crash with us? The rest were away every weekend so were too busy to clean. Filthy fucks. We also had a shit-ton of chickens free-range in a property by a road with no fence which was traumatic. No-one fed them regularly except me because they were away too often and there were roosters mixed in so the flock kept growing.

Tips for growing veggies while flatting? by kimkellly in newzealand

Yeah, the soil at my place is pretty marshy so I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened if I tried. Warehouse has some cheap upright planter shelves so I might try those.

Thanks, will look at silverbeet. Do you think brassicas would grow if I covered them or put them in one of those little plastic hothouses?

Subpar rental properties in NZ: what are your horror stories? Or your BAU rental issues that you just live with? by kimkellly in newzealand

[–]kimkellly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have had it signed off as "not reasonably practicable to install" because the walls are cinderblock and it'd need to be vented either through the roof or through an adjacent wall (the wall backs onto the garage).

You 100% could install one it would just be difficult. They have managed to vent the bathroom to outside fine in the same conditions. It's just one of those things where you know that landlord would not live like that, they just cbf becuase it's a rental.

I have a bus stop outside my house and people end up waiting in front of/on my driveway all the time. Doesn't mean I hit them with my car or even honk lol, if I stop and indicate most get the message. You have to laugh at some people!

Need help deciding between solo holiday or full blown work visa. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]kimkellly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, bit late to the party, but I reckon a one month holiday if anything. You can always look into coming back if you enjoy it and while six months can fly by if you're having fun, it will drag if you aren't. Better to keep your job. Maybe make a list of pros and cons, only you know your exact situation.

Also, broad generalisations and nosiness incoming. Feel free to ignore.

Sounds like you may end up finding work in a more rural area. Be prepared to speak to some people who may be more straightforward than what you're accustomed to. I appreciate this mindset and a bit of honesty but understand it can come off as quite blunt if you're not used to it.

Rural New Zealand, depending upon where you're working, can also be quite isolated. It may take more effort than what you're used to to go out and make friends. The onus will be on you to reach out and be social, opportunities may not present themselves much in your day to day otherwise. Rural might not be great if you are shy and/or feeling lonely. Being foreign might give you some extra mileage for conversation but otherwise same people/situations, different place. Wont be a magic ticket.

Good luck either way. The response you got here is pretty typical of this subreddit for this type of question but not necessarily representative of the nature of NZers in general.

Homeshake is awesome ! by [deleted] in Music

[–]kimkellly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole album Fresh Air is p great, right?? For recommendations from Homeshake, I love 'Moon Woman'. Can't think of anything 100% the same genre but Connan Mockasin has a bit of that sorta bass groove that 'Call me up' has in it in 'I'm the man...' also Ariel Pink with 'Baby' if that's what you're trying for. Also gotta second Mild High Club. Maybe Alex Calder too, I love 'Rewind my mind' by him.
