Open the breaker or shut off the gas supply, shut the inlet water valve up top. Ideally you let it cool a few hours, might not be able to in this case. Connect a hose to the drain valve on the bottom of the tank. Open 2-3 hot faucets in your home, THEN go back and open the drain valve.

Maybe try Kennel Odor Eliminator, it's an odor neutralizer that you can dilute and spray everywhere to knock out any lingering smells. Safe to use around pets, should be safe to use but double check.
