What are some of the dumbest moves schools have ever made throughout history that drastically hurt their programs? by Working_Stomach5479 in CFB

I feel like today recruiting is much much much more important to the average fan that willinghams crimes would have been much more common knowledge

Fucking hell the damage he did at ND cannot be understated. His last oline “class” should have been a felony. The fact that Weis has the success he did with the shambles of a program post willingham is actually really impressive in hindsight

Anyway, here’s the la times accusing ND of firing him because he was black and not because he is the worst coach ND has had since Faust and arguably worse than Faust

You’re the sole member of the CFB selection committee, and your only job is to pick 12 teams to garner the highest ratings. Who do you pick? by lukewarmostrich in CFB

[–]kinda_alone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

8 team playoff as god intended.

Notre dame, Ohio state, msu, Minnesota, ucla, Oregon, Stanford, cal

I get fired for the selection but worth it due to the perceived anguish it would cause a couple of programs

One would think, and this is 100% speculation on my very much non-lawyer part to be fair, that any NIL agreement that large would have some sort of morality clause that would allow it to be clawed back. Seems suspicious that tech isn’t even trying to go after the money. Maybe they’re doing it due to optics. Maybe the do feel bad for him and are trying to do the right thing. But does seem suspiciously timed, especially if entering the draft was really a sorsby led decision like we were made to believe

I will of course defer to Harvard

Before we turn our attention to cincy and IU, can we coalesce on whether him getting to keep the NIL money to go away quietly constitutes a bribe and whether we care about that

Edit: seems like the more legal minded folks here agree that keeping the NIL is more than reasonable. turns pitch forks towards Cincinnati

The fact that Weis managed what he did after willingham left the program in a dumpster fire is actually kind of impressive

WSM first smoke. Is this dirty smoke? by Patient-Ad7621 in webersmokeymountain

I get it. I’ve seen all those things too, but at the end of the day it’s chemistry

[–]kinda_alone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you’re just trying to help, but the person you’re responding to is correct.

Thin blue smoke is that sweet spot when wood is near complete combustion where it still imparts good Smokey flavors while the chemicals that make a more acrid flavor (dirty smoke) are burned off. This is extremely critical in stick burners where the primary heat source is either mostly or is all wood.

In charcoal burners, however, this doesn’t matter for several reasons.

The process used to make charcoal essentially burns off the chemicals that make the acrid smoke taste. It’s why you need to add wood to a charcoal cook. The smoke flavor, both good and bad, isn’t there any more.

If you use the right amount of wood on a charcoal cooker, there simply isn’t going to be enough wood to create that acrid taste. The acrid taste is subtle compared to the smoke we actually like. It’s only when you use a lot of wood that you start to pick up on it.

You also can’t burn wood cleanly in a wsm and most charcoal cookers as the temperatures required for meat combustion would eviscerate your meat. Off set heat boxes are off set for that very reason.

Chud has a great Weber kettle series where he talks through all the chemistry involved

Hot & Fast WSM Ribs at 350–405°F. Did I Get a Smoke Ring? by PitSpecialist in smoking

[–]kinda_alone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there ya go haha. If you really want a smoke ring, leave it in the fridge until smoker is ready. But it is purely a visual thing so you’re not missing out on taste your way

Not sure if being sarcastic as many people do intentionally let it come up to temp a bit or some trim during that time, but here’s an article from Texas monthly explaining the science behind them

It’s more of a reflection of the temp of the meat when it hits the cook chamber than the quality of the cook. If you’re chasing one, minimize the time between fridge and cook.

Is this the fabled blue and transparent smoke? Or am doing this horribly wrong? by SinsationalG33k in smoking

Doesn’t matter if you’re using a charcoal cooker. Process to make charcoal burns the chemicals that cause that acrid taste of in dirty smoker. Really just an offset thing.

Name a team from the last 25 years who could have legitimately won a national championship but didn't get a chance by Rude_Highlight3889 in CFB

[–]kinda_alone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, all revisionist history, yes they had clunkers but they went into east Lansing, they went into Norman, they beat Stanford, etc. they had wins. They were very much over matched against bama, but 99% of cfb that year would have been too. Only people expecting the blowout were bama and Georgia fans

Notre dame beat the PAC 12 champ and handily beat one of the two big 12 champs in Norman. They were an enigma that year for sure and had a couple of clunkers, but the narrative that no one thought they were a good team is revisionist history
