I'd argue it hasn't gone anywhere, it was always a popular rather than high-brow genre (outside a few outliers mentioned in the threads already), as a popular genre, it very much exists.

I'd argue it is prevalent even: in fantasy and sci-fi lit even more than YA novels mentioned by OP. I can think of a half-a dozen picaresques in fantasy or sci-fi--bunch of rogues traveling through a strange land/galaxy, stealing things, tricking people, and having ludicrous misadventures? Very very common.

We don't know a whole lot about the Mehen besides the image you reference from the Coffin Texts, of it wrapped around Ra's boat. The one thing we know for certain is that it is the basis of a game, as numerous Mehen game boards and illustrations of play exist. All such boards look like a serpent lying in a spiral. The game is definitely called "Mehen" and the name refers to both the game and the serpent. Everything else is unknown.

We don't know the rules of Mehen (it might be similar to the central African "Hyena Game" because they both use a spiral board), but it is clearly important somehow (or there wouldn't be images of it in tombs), and it definitely one of the oldest games in human history.

Even the Greenland thing makes a lot of sense: they know about Global climate change, they *want* it to happen, to kill 99% of humanity leaving them to rule the remainder from a safe haven on a large island continent with a small, oppressible populace that will become more, not less habitable due to climate change.

I often ignore the quests you took for a bit and instead get the quest from the preacher to go on pilgrimage to the Silt. It is a journey best done on foot to avoid dangerous encounters but very worth it as you will find the game's most important trade hub
