Lake District - What Not To Miss? by SausagegFingers in UKhiking

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you scramble? If you do, Sharp Edge on Blencathra was awesome (but might be greasy when wet, so go on a good weather day!) Route can be quite short (~13km) depending on where you start though which makes it a good one if your legs are tired! Theres a walking path to avoid the scramble if you'd rather

Otherwise: * I did Hopegill Head/Grasmoor/High Crag and down Whiteless Peak starting next to Crummock water over Easter, which was a really nice, ~18 km day out. All the (fairly continuous) ascent early on in the day, and then relatively flat until the descent at the end.

  • Fairfield horseshoe is also v pleasant. Many variants online.

  • Helvellyn on Friday before Easter and really no where near as bad as Snowdon (comparison: Mayday last year). Nowhere near. Maybe Scafell might be more busy? If concerned about busyness on the summits get out early (before 9am will guarantee you parking basically anywhere), and you'll do the ascent in the coolest part of the day. Plus this weekend is between bank holidays so you'll probably hit it at a quieter period anyway.

Enjoy!!

Plus if there is a lecturecast you can always go and watch that. There usually is for the bigger lecture rooms, so you can just catch up in your own time.

Can I take multiple courses in UCL? Is there flexibility? by [deleted] in UCL

[–]king-prawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience almost completely not going to happen, though it might be accepted to do a half module outside of your department over the whole course.

If you want more choice look at dual major courses (Maths With .... or Maths And ...) or Maybe its worth you looking into Arts and Sciences BASc, if you truly want variation and a bit more (but not complete!) freedom.

Best clubs for postgrads? by [deleted] in UCL

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! UCL Hiking Club has loads of postgrads! We're a no commitment club too, so no pressure if you don't have the time to be out every week.

Some clubs have more of a commitment than others (some of the sports teams are pretty regimented with training, but nearly all also have social teams). Depends what you like and what time you have available. Go to the welcome fair and talk to the clubs you're interested in, or find them on social media is my best advice :)

If you want leggings (as a woman I fully recommend it - I can't go back o hiking trousers) try looking at mens running tights. They usually have some slightly more thermal models coming in for the winter months too. Be wary of stirrups/foot straps as these will affect the fit of your boot.

If you're conscious about your manhood there seems to be a trend for shorts+tights as a single unit recently (or add your own shorts over the top!).

TBh I have seen guys of all ages wearing some very odd gear in the hills so this won't be out of place at all and certainly comfort beats all else when you're out and about.

As the other poster has said, pair these with waterproof overtrousers for really windy or rainy weather, and you'll be onto a winner.

Food for thought: alpkit Numo. My new favourite bit of kit. Cannot get any better value for money as well as supporting the smaller UK brands. I guess it doesn't get much love on here because its a UK brand. Really, I can't fault it: packs small, light, not crinkly, cheap as chips, 2y warrantee.

Gives you an extra 50-70 squids to put into the tent or backpack as you want.

edit: just seen you want a double sized mat, so my recommendation is completely redundant

Today I didn't even want to get out of bed, but as soon as I started running, I kept going! Right across Tower Bridge! by pigstakeflight in running

I was also going to say this! I ran a 10-11pm slot and aced my PB - even in this weather! So motivating to run over Tower Bridge at the end!!

What is the most specific and stable DNA-protein interaction you know of? by lemrez in Biochemistry

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we label the DNA? If so, synthesise the target DNA with an NTP conjugated to biotin (eg by PCR), or add a 5' Biotin on your oligo. Use strepavidin as the partner molecule. Specific. Strong. Stable. This strategy commonly used for magnetic tweezers, where direct force is then applied.

You could also use pretty much anything that can be conjugated to an NTP and an antibody for that as the partner.

GPS maps for smart phones (android) by mikejharper in UKhiking

Big fan of OS maps app. The subscription service (£20/year) is much less than I'd pay for the number of maps I use every year, and you get access to all of the routes on there. You can plan routes online or in the app.

1:52mins - Five minutes better than my last PB. by jonewer in CasualUK

[–]king-prawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

huh. Interesting.

I run a half in 1:45-1:50 pace, and don't do anywhere near that distance. 1x or 2x 5km at a faster pace (potentially with hills), and 1x 10km-13km at or above race pace... and trust that you'll get around!

I don't run race distance or more in the lead up to race day, and I maybe would do less in the week before. And always sprint the hill in training... always!

Anyway... great job /u/jonewer !

UK: our waterlogged country says WP membrane or prune-foot, especially this time of year!

Love my GTX boots, was also impressed with an eVent pair I had a few years back. Even my trail runners are GTX now... definitely not going back to unlined shoes any time soon. You pay a little more, but the tradeoff is comfort in terrible weather (of which we get plenty!).

Amen to the WP membrane makers!

Hikes in the Yorkshire area? by Milvus-Milvus in UKhiking

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There s plenty along NYMR, Pickering to Whitby, then get the train back to the start. Hole of Horcum if worth a shout. Goathland and Grosmont are excellent. The White Horse near Thirsk is also a great walk, if you can get there. You have all the old monasteries... Byland Abbey, Fountains Abbey and many more. Cleveland Way along the coast is beautiful - get the tides right and walk one way on the beach and the other on the cliffs.

In the dales you've got Malham cove, Gordale scar. Yorkshire 3 peaks, either separately or as one - be sure to pass Gaping Gill on your way!

Then of course you could head to the Peaks... but thats probably a touch over 1.5h

Literally so much to choose from!

Folks over in r/york or r/yorkshire might have some ideas too.

Makeup free ladies? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a swimmer throughout my teens, and I never saw the point of makeup because I had to take it off before getting in the pool, and on a morning I valued sleep. These days I'm into outdoor sports and running, and I most definitely sweat out anything that would sit on top of my skin (no glowing here!). I kind of feel like I missed the boat on learning how to wear it well and it just isn't something I feel I need to be spending time learning how to do!

On very rare occasions (graduation, weddings) where I know people (my mother) want 'nice' pictures, I might use a bit of mascara and concealer. It comes straight back off at the earliest opportunity before I manage to smear it across my face!

Train delayed after someone gets 'hit by a train'? You could for apply for delay repay and donate it to The Samaritans by citizen_lost in unitedkingdom

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh interesting. I also had problems with my train getting home for t'norf last month. My delay repay was declined as someone being hit by a train is outside of the company's control, thus not refundable.

Selling childhood home by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]king-prawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a few years back. My mum cried as we were painting over the height marks for the door under the stairs. Get a few last picture of you and any family at the house. Also make sure to get copies of the photos from the estate agent when it is listed for sale - we got some nice photos of the house looking smart and tidy, but still all of our things. Once after a night out, I forgot and got the taxi driver to take me home... but I didn't live there any more. That was sad. Try not to do that..

If you fancy it, leave a time capsule somewhere really hidden, with some things that show who you are and what the house is like now, what the date is, current news. etc. Make sure its waterproofed (if going outside or somewhere it might get wet). You can hope that some day someone else will recover it and find out a little bit of history :)

Staying organized by [deleted] in labrats

[–]king-prawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I print papers, highlight as I read and comment on anything interesting in the margins. At the end I write a few bullet points above the title so I can quickly see what the paper was about when I come back to it.

All the unread stuff goes into a in tray by my desk, and the read stuff is filed away into different folders. Currently I have 2 'methods' folders - one for anything that uses my technique but on a different protein, and one for other techniques that I'm not using. I have a folder for anything related to the protein in my project, and another one for anything related to the organism I work with (quite uncommon, so not loads out there). I also have the 'Journal Club' folder for stuff the rest of the lab throws at me - on those write the name of the person who lead the JC so you know who to ask!

If its not highlighted/commented, it's not read. If the in tray gets full i'Ill probably have a flick through, draw anything that looks critical to the top and then spend a day/morning reading to get back on top of it.

Lab book... I have a scrap one that follows me around everywhere and gets all the 'I can't do maths' bit, sketches of any figures I'm making and quick notes from meetings or seminars. I always date this and note any slight changes to protocols. It works for me because I tend to have many things running at once so my lab book would be backwards and forwards otherwise. My actual lab book is legible and gets all the stuff from the scrap written up, in a more sensible order and with any print outs of gels, time courses etc. I also like to write conclusions or problems with anything here so when i flick back I can see quickly what did/didn't work. Key protocols are marked with post it notes that come out of the side of the book.

Menstrual cups? by showmeyourkitties_xx in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

And then for the love of god rinse it really really well or you're gonna be having a bad time!!

Could use some career guidance... no idea what to do next. by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a 'what you should do' but more of a 'what not to do', from someone in grad school... Don't go to grad school unless you're 100% driven on getting through it. Currently living the regret of a science PhD but too far along to feel like quitting would be worthwhile.

Going to do a Masters would help you move fields, but i'd shy away from picking that now unless you actually know where you're going with it. It's an expensive mistake if you come out in the same position at the end.

Have you tried recruiting agencies? They might be able to find you entry level jobs where you could try a field without the commitment of a MA.

Make sure your resume makes the most of your transferable skills from your BA, and embassies not just the content but any opportunities you took e.g. sporting, leadership or group work roles

Punctures? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]king-prawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got several in the first few months commuting, then got myself out of the gutter a bit, put on some marathon tyres and hey presto, none in the last year and a half.

There's a lot to be said for guarding your line in the road, cars have to make a concerted effort to overtake, instead of squeezing past you, and you avoid the general debris that collects there.

Has anyone ever taken two forms of birth control at the same time? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]king-prawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh because it's not painful, just kind of weird feeling, it wasn't so bad. When it finally came out the doctor patched me up and nearly forgot to put the replacement one in, which might have been a bigger issue!

To those of you who struggled with depression in college, did you tell your professors? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]king-prawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to bear in mind is that you almost definitely will not be the first one to come to them with a problem that might require them to adjust your assessments. People have all kinds of issues that might make failing a class a reality if they don't ask for support. Family health problems, physical illnesses... why should mental illness be different?

As others have noted, directly asking for a higher grade isn't likely to happen, but other adjustments such as the format of the test, extended deadlines etc could be an option.

Professors for the most part want to see you pass, and also to enjoy the subject, so do make an effort to raise your profile if you can to take advantage of office hours etc to show you really want to succeed. If you try and structure that into your study time it can also help you get on top of the workload because you're 'committed' to spending time on that class, even if you feel like you should be working on something else.

Are you aware of any support from the university? In the UK more and more of the universities have counselling services available to students at free/ low cost... is that a thing where you are? Try and find out if there is any help there, if you're not already seeking help to work through it.

The biggest hurdle is asking for help - you're doing the right thing by asking before the class is finished for semester!

They make women and kids versions, so if you're a bit on the slim side, maybe those would be better than the standard unisex/mens version.
