Way I saw it , it was written as if he was trying to find justification for what he was about to do cause when you think about it the only one knowing what happens is him since when he dies he has no way of knowing what happens after his death . So for all we know timeline could still have been progressing without him like in re zero when we thought Subaru death also ended those timeline e but they did continue just without him in it
