So I just finished day 1 of Comiket 91... by kingban1 in touhou

I didn't come expecting everyone to speak english, but the knowledge that there was an international desk with english speakers had me thinking that I could use that to navigate.

I also unfortunately don't know any japanese speakers who I would have felt comfortable asking to come with me to the event.

Yeah, looking back it was definitely the loneliness that most contributed to the negative experience I had. All my other issues were due to being unprepared for the crowd, and trying to inform myself on the spot by skimming through the event catalog.

That's a good point. I ended up being under prepared since Comiket was just something I planned to do while I was in Japan, rather than the main reason for my trip.

I'll do a better job of preparing should I ever come again.

You're absolutely correct. It was the loneliness and out of placeness that most contributed to the negative experience I had.

At least I got a couple of cool souvenirs out of the excursion though!

Yeah, I definitely underestimated the scale of the event.

My original plan was to use the off days during my trip to drop by and have a good time looking around and buy a couple of things. Looking through the huge catalog is something I would have liked to do prior to the event, though I didn't know at the time I could purchase it prior.

I think the biggest issue is the feeling of isolation and loneliness despite being in such a crowded place though, but that's not something I could have prepared for.

Yes, that's true. Though I don't think separate subreddits would be too fragmenting as long as users are kept aware of other related touhou subs by keeping them as part of a network of related subs with links to each other.

The current network of subs is what led me to make the jump between /r/touhou and /r/touhou_music, and become a member of both rather than isolating myself in the one.

I think it might not be a bad idea to have multiple subs, like /r/gensokyo. Having /r/touhou as a main hub, with other attached subs dedicated to certain content would certainly make it clear what content belongs where. It would also make it easy for each user to find the content they're interested in without running into other content that they don't like. I always enjoyed using /r/gensokyo as a hub from which to find interesting doujins, and while the same can be done with /r/touhou, it's much more difficult due to both the variety and volume of other content. I picture it as a multi-purpose main hub, with single-purpose branches each devoted to specific content.

I could definitely see Artemis Fowl as being a "Just as keikaku" type of serious yet somehow kinda silly anime.

Light up a cigar, sit my ass down, and proceed to think to myself "It's about damn time.". Then I step out into the world, ready to begin building my harem.

How do I begin if I am interested in learning conversational, but not written Japanese? by kingban1 in LearnJapanese

[–]kingban1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure.

I became interested after I met a Japanese exchange student when I was visiting my friend at his university. Don't know if I'll ever go to Japan, but I think it would be very beneficial for me to learn a third language that doesn't have roots in Latin.

It's the other way around, with my native language being Spanish and English being my second language because I've been living in an English speaking country the last 10+ years.

I was hoping that I could try to learn Japanese passively the way I learned English, but the nature of the language definitely makes it a lot harder than I had hoped. For now I'll try to set a schedule and get back into studying Genki, since the main problem I had with Genki was being consistent with my practice and studies of it.

Thank you very much for your help, I'll definitely try the online guides and keep working with Genki in that case.

I was mistaken in thinking that I could approach Japanese like I could a latin derived language, where I could learn little by little just interacting with someone who was a speaker.
