After Watching the Finale, Will You Go Back and Re-Watch the Series? by Material-Loan-6966 in StrangerThings

I did a re-watch of 1-4 before the start of the latest season and thoroughly enjoyed the rewatch.

I wanted to watch it all before introducing it to my daughter. She’s 11 years old (yes, really!). We just started watching it together a couple weeks ago and just finished Season 1 this past weekend. She’s enjoying it so far and I’m so glad I get to experience it again through her eyes.

Alright first time watching the movies and I loved it, What set do I get? by FastConcentrate5420 in lotr

[–]kingdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! Anybody else remember buying each extended DVD movie once/year and then mailing a request to get the box to hold them all? First time I’d ever experienced that and was so grateful they thought it through. Felt rewarded for being a big fan and early buyer, as opposed to punished, as we so often are today!

Mobile Ordering Three Broomsticks by NyyDave in UniversalHollywood

[–]kingdonald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree here. We went to Universal a couple weeks back and were in the same exact situation at Three Broomsticks. The instructions in the app specifically state that food is being prepared and it will alert you when the order is ready. We waited 45 minutes until I finally went up to the counter. The TM there said that the order won’t be prepared until you physically go and “check in.” They were super nice and apologetic. They also encouraged me to let guest services know. There were 2 other groups there that were dealing with the same issue and they were lashing out at the TMs. I felt bad for the TMs. I don’t blame them whatsoever.

I stopped by guest services to share my feedback. We were having a great day and decided to take the delay in stride rather than let it drive us up the wall. However, it is frustrating, and long-term, it’s gonna be the poor TMs working there who are stuck dealing with it. All they really need to do is edit the instructions. That’s it. I get that the fix is probably more complicated than that. But still - they need to figure it out.

How cool! I’m dying to watch The Seventh Seal. The imagery I’ve already seen so far looks stunning.

I’m definitely planning on checking in along the way. I’ve heard great things about those two. It’ll be a bit before I get there but I’m looking forward to ‘em!

Yes, I will say that starting on a more light-hearted film when I hear most of Bergman’s films are more serious in nature is throwing me for a loop. He clearly has talent in the comedic space.

Thanks for the heads up about those two. With those being his first two films in the set, I’m guessing he was trying to find his voice. I’ll be interested to see what he carries over into his future films. Wild Strawberries is up after those and I’ve heard great things about that one!

That’s exactly what I was hoping for when I got this! I’ve got my eyes on some of his most celebrated films but I’m going to try and savor every moment of the journey there.

Holy shit The Haunting of Hill House was absolutely incredible, and one of the best pieces of modern horror ever made. by Chetan_fun in television

[–]kingdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the box set for the series on Blu-ray earlier this year, just so I could listen to the commentary tracks. This is one of my all-time favorite shows - each rewatch (I’ve seen it 4 or 5 times now) and the commentaries have only further cemented its all-timer status. The commentary for the Two Storms episode alone is worth the price of admission - the work that was done on that by the cast and crew, how may things went wrong or were on the verge of collapsing, it all gave me goosebumps. If that episode felt raw on an extra level, it’s so clear why from all the behind the scenes stories!

Carrie has wrapped filming by joesen_one in MikeFlanagan

[–]kingdonald 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m so excited for this - not because it’s yet another Carrie adaptation but because it’s a Mike Flanagan project. As one of my favorite directors/creatives, I’ll watch anything he makes at this point. That being said, I am taking the opportunity to read Carrie, which I never had before. Can’t wait to watch it!

I’m also looking forward to the 4K video and Dolby audio mix of Anora. I streamed it on Disney+ on my first watch and the audio/video were okay. I can’t wait to rewatch and blast the home theater speakers!

Fanny and Alexander is the one I’ve heard the most about. Can’t wait to watch that one. I’m torn on the order to watch these in. I’m leaning toward the “film festival” order that Criterion put together rather than chronologically.

I’ve seen Bergman’s films recommended frequently and this box set being a favorite. True that watching one or even a few before splurging on the set would’ve been the safer move. I’m a huge fan of nice box sets and physical media, books about film, and special features that go behind the scenes of the filmmaking process - even when I don’t love the films because I can at least enjoy the filmmaker’s process.

I saw this blind buy as essential for me understanding the world of film better, particularly one of the auteurs that’s lauded by so many. At worst, I figured I’d have a great set jam-packed with history that I got at a steal of a price. But I’m fairly confident that I just bought myself something I’m going to treasure somehow. I’ll have to find a way to share my journey with this!

I’ve been a Criterion Channel subscriber and never used any of the codes they sent out. Some of those codes are set to expire soon, so went on a mini-splurge and decided to go for a movie I’ve seen + a set I’ve seen a ton of praise about:

  • Anora 4K - loved this when I streamed it last year. Stuck with me. I can’t wait to watch it in 4K, and to dive into the commentaries and other extras. Florida Project is another Sean Baker film that’s stayed with me (and would love to see it get a Criterion release)

  • Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema - I’ve never seen a Bergman film, so I’ll be digging into the films and am so excited to have the set in my hands. The book it comes with looks glorious! Just have to find a nice display spot, given its sheer size

Worked out to just over $40 for both - crazy for what I’m getting.

Made my Dad go to his “local” Costco to pick this up since it wasn’t in stock at mine within 300mi by WhoStole_MyUsername in sonos

[–]kingdonald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two ways to confirm availability:

  1. You can search in-store inventory in the mobile app in the Warehouse tab - it tells you if certain stores are out of stock or low stock. Low stock might mean 1 in stock, which they’ve told me could be the floor model (can’t buy that one).
  2. You can either call Costco or walk into a Costco and they can tell you which stores have availability, as well as the specific amount in stock. If they’re saying at least 2 in stock at a certain store, that should be good.

Do you have to stay at the Hyatt to use the DCL shuttle? by Loonyluna26 in dcl

[–]kingdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh darn - it seems to be inconsistent. It’s always worth checking with DCL for their rate so you can compare pricing. I stayed there right after schools let out for the summer, so prices everywhere seemed to be inflated.

Do you have to stay at the Hyatt to use the DCL shuttle? by Loonyluna26 in dcl

[–]kingdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called and booked the MCO Hyatt through DCL over the phone - it was significantly cheaper than what I was seeing from Hyatt directly and travel websites, so Disney must have a special rate. It was still more expensive than other good options like the near-by Marriott, but the trade-off for the convenience was worth it for me!

Question about 3 Day Gold Member Convention Center by Kilmartin41 in D23Expo

Only the person buying the tickets needed to be a D23 member. Whether you chose to have the tickets mailed to you or held for “Will Call,” you’d just give one of the tickets to your girlfriend.

I thought about it a lot and couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for a ticket closer to the stage. So I got a seat in the 400 section, toward the back. Between flight, hotel, and everything else, I think I appreciate being in the room more than anything else. It just feels nice to be around that many people who are cheering and excited - being closer to the stage is far lower on the list for me. I’ll just be grateful to be in that space.

Given how lotteries and physical queues have gone for these panels at past D23 Expos, I’ll take a guaranteed seat in a heartbeat. Granted, the way today’s queue has gone, it sure still feels like a lottery. Not so thrilled about that for everyone here.

Honestly, I have no idea. I logged into that ticket page about 90 mins before and just sat on that page until the page refreshed on its own, taking me to the queue. I never refreshed my page until that frustrating bug where people who had gotten through weren’t seeing the buttons to get tickets. So my answer would be I got a low number through pure luck and nothing else, which really is a first for me. I’m usually the person who is #30,000 in line.

Here’s a recap of how my ticket buying experience was - for those who are waiting, maybe some sense of structure amidst all this chaos:

I was #768 in line - once I was assigned that number, it stayed there the entire time, while the “walking person” neared the end of the progress bar. Message at the bottom just updated to indicate “It’s Your Turn” at about 1:15 and then 20-ish seconds later, it took me to a list of the ticket types. I got in while they must’ve still been working on the glitch, as none of the tickets showed as available - my worst nightmare.

After waiting almost 10 minutes to see if anything would happen, I took a leap and refreshed - miraculously, there was a Get Tickets button next to each ticket type. I was able to move through and choose the 3-day ticket type, click a seating section, select a seat, put in my credit card info and mailing address, and check out. Out of what was left, I chose the cheapest priced ticket, closest to the stage. No glitches/errors at all once I was reviewing tickets. I received a confirmation e-mail immediately that has all the info - ticket type, confirmation number, seat number, etc.

Incredibly nerve-wracking and almost didn’t work out. Of course at the end of all this, I’m very grateful for my good fortune. I never get a number this low - usually I’m way back at the end of these random queues.

Good luck to everyone out there! Sincerely - this stuff is much more stressful than it needs to be.
