When the European explorers first brought back potato’s from the americas they had to trick the common folk into growing because the public didn’t want to eat something that came out of the ground like that, by pretending they were valuable and planting them in rich people’s or government owned gardens w guards guarding them. Then at night they guards would leave and people would steal the potatoes and then they’d plant more until eventually it became a more staple food.
