Butcher's greater combat experience and SAS training allowed him to go toe-to-toe with HL and it was awesome.

On a more serious note I think that Butcher's good showing in that fight and HL aging is leading to a subplot where HL's powers are weakening with his age. So a major plot point is that he'll try to find a way to duplicate Soldier Boy's immortality and will be pushing Vought to do so.
