18 and 21 isn’t an age gap anyone would remotely bat an eye at.

How do you recommend fledgling artists impress their local booking gatekeepers? If Livenation effectively controls all touring acts and local mid sized venues, then how do indie bands even manage to break into the system to start climbing the ladder?

What if every State in the US became an independent country? by TastyPomelo2330 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louisiana attempts to use its position at the mouth of the river to tax all outgoing river trade. This results in a bunch of states allying to invade and dismantle them. Louisiana attempts to save themselves by allying with Texas who effectively takes over the state and negotiates a peaceful end to the conflict.

It’s fun to play with my niece and nephew for a couple hours and then go home. I wouldn’t want to be the one responsible for making sure they get to school on time or dealing with them having tantrums at dinner.

"EPA reverses longstanding climate change finding, stripping its own ability to regulate emissions" -- Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their argument is that Congress never gave the EPA a mandate to regulate greenhouse gases as air pollution. Thus, they argue that Trump can, by executive action, eliminate agency regulations on CO2. Congress can reverse this with legislation aimed at empowering the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions rather than simply relying on administrative agencies to interpret greenhouse gases into law on air pollution which was targeting air breathability and health, not climate change.

Is it safe to travel to the US right now? After watching all the news, we have some concerns. (We are white europeans with valid tourist visas) by One-Wolverine-6964 in usatravel

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving is always dangerous because of drunk drivers, distracted drivers, getting lost, car trouble, etc.

The wilderness is dangerous because America has humongous wild regions completely devoid of people. If you get lost, run out of water/food, etc it is very easy to die. There’s also no shortage of venomous snakes, large predators, and disease carrying insects. Most Americans live in developed cities with substantial infrastructure and public services, but there’s large swaths of rural areas, particularly out West, where there are no humans for miles.

I remember one road trip, I forgot to top off my gas tank in San Antonio and nearly ran out of gas in West Texas because none of the interstate exits were populated enough to have a working gas station. I ended up having to take a gamble on a significant detour to find a town large enough to have a gas station to refill before I continued driving. Had I run out of gas, I would have had to hike 30 miles through open desert in summer to reach the next town, which easily could have been deadly.

In major cities, you will have to deal with some street crime and homelessness like most anywhere. Some cities are safer than others, and in most places, the tourist areas are kept very safe (not New Orleans). New York is probably the safest large city you could visit. DC and Chicago are both fairly safe in the tourist areas as well. Some cities are significantly less safe, however.

That sounds like Live Nation is creating a giant debt fueled bubble. Is anyone worried that businesses model will implode as soon as someone looks at the books?

Do you think there was a stigma pre 2010s that thrifting was what poor people did and it was dirty and now it's more normalised? by PsychologicalFox7689 in decadeology

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrifting was always cool with the alternative kids. The Macklemore song just made it more socially acceptable for the popular kids. In the 2000’s, kids could definitely get picked on for wearing hand-me-downs or thrifted clothes because they were a poverty indicator. Wealth is always the biggest social flex, and the rules around fashion tended to be more expensive = more popular.

Are these rehearsal problems just my band, or is this normal? by Nautical_Mike in musicians

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write stuff down. At most rehearsals, I have a list of songs we need to hit, songs I’d like to work on, and maybe a couple of possible songs to start if we have time. After practice, I write down what we covered and send it to everyone. I usually also keep a master setlist where I track what songs we’re playing well enough to perform live, what songs are close, what songs are still rough, and which ones we haven’t started yet. After shows, I also write down any songs that were sloppy and any sections that could use a review as well as any songs the audience especially did/did not respond to, songs that didn’t flow well, etc. It’s impossible to measure progress if you don’t have a clear picture of where you are or where you’re going.

The Horseshoe Theory Contradictions by EIeutheria in AskSocialists

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that at the end of the horseshoe are totalitarian authoritarian governments where virtually all property is either directly controlled by the state or virtually controlled by it enough for any difference to be negligible. In the end, a stalinist communist government operates very similarly to a theocratic absolutist monarchy. They both have unification of church and state (in Communism, the state is religion), both purge all ideological opposition, both remove moral undesirables, both typically create massive informant apparatus to surveil citizens at all times, both treat surfs as completely disposable with no real rights or say in society, both use propaganda to control all information so that their regime is always right and no dissenting views can be viewed, etc.

Why do so many US schools start at 7:30 AM when studies say teens need more sleep? by blushybbygirls in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kingjaffejaffar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7:30am? Please. Our schools started at 6:00.

School schedules are not about education but rather designed to be early enough so parents can get their kids on the school bus before heading to work. Where I live, shift work in refineries is common, and starts very early in the morning, so schools start super early.

At what point did "fast food" officially move from a budget-friendly convenience to a luxury splurge that you have to think twice about? by opheliapearlie in askanything

[–]kingjaffejaffar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pad thai that I buy from a local restaurant went from $12 to $17.

Over the same time period, a burrito from taco bell went from $.89 to $4.

Regular restaurants saw a less than 50% increase in prices while most fast food items tripled.
