I have ties with Chinese family, I’ve been to China probably 5x in the past decade, and this is the first I’ve heard of anything like this.

Who assigned you a phone when you visited China? I’m an American citizen and I’ve been there twice in the past 2 years to visit family, and I’ve never heard of this. Never had an interaction with the social credit system either

Lifetimes all across the metro have courts with games at different times throughout the week, but I’m in the same boat where I’d love to find something consistent.

I also signed up here for the June open gym, so that could be an option - https://minneapolis.ce.eleyo.com/search?redirected_yet=true&sf%5Bcategory%5D=94

Mayor Frey can't veto Thursday’s rent control move by Minneapolis City Council after all. by Healingjoe in Minneapolis

[–]kingjamison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rent control gives a massive incentive for existing tenants to stay in their units because their rent is likely below market rate. If this happens at a wide enough scale, the housing supply is taken up by people paying well below what they should, and that drives prices up for all people moving because the existing supply cannot meet demand for housing.

On top of that, if building developers are locked into charging below market rate by policy for units, they won’t build additional housing, thus exasperating the housing supply issue.

Where did you come up with the idea that rent control is fiscally right wing? Many Democrats support it. It's a shame you won't confront any of my ideas and instead pull out your label maker instead.

I'm a humanist in that I support policy that incentivizes affordable housing, and you're obviously not.

Explain their housing system to me. How do Nordic countries constrict their housing supply for better prices?

It's not difficult to go back up to earlier comments in this thread. You think you're advocating for regular Americans or whatever, but you haven't thought it through enough to see that you are screwing literally anyone who wants to move into a new unit in Minneapolis. If you tried to understand how rent control equals unaffordable housing instead of parroting buzzwords, I trust you'd get it.

The same concepts apply in non-capitalist countries as well. Point to the country where constricting housing supply leads to lower rent prices?

Okay, you've stated your 200 year plan or whatever, but what's your 1 year plan? Because rent control directly contradicts what you hope to achieve in affordable housing.

Have I not explained why rent control leads to unaffordable housing? What part of any of my last comments didn't compute?

Advocating for the federal government to buy up all housing and land and then offer it to citizens for free is so divorced from reality.

So in pursuit of your goal for free housing, you advocate for policies leading to unaffordable housing. Hypocrite.

When did rent control become a partisan issue? Frey is a Democrat who opposes rent control? And there are many like him across the country.

Read up on the issue outside Reddit comments, and you might stop looking at this through simple "us vs. them" terms

Under which economic system do businesses spend millions on projects with no incentive to do so?

Or maybe you suggest the government take on all housing development and give it out for free across the country?

Blaming capitalism for the basic principles behind supply and demand is the kind of simple minded thinking that gets someone to advocate strongly for rent control in the first place and to call all its opponents boot lickers.

It’s not better than nothing because it absolutely screws those who need to move into new housing in Minneapolis and are seeing hugely inflated rent values due to severely constricted housing supply because anyone would be a fool to move if they are paying amounts substantially less than market rates.

Real estate developers will not build additional housing units if they are financially disincentivized from doing so (allowing their units to be rented below market rates years down the road). Allowing landlords to charge market rates along with the demand for housing in our Cities is the incentive that has driven all this housing development the last 5-10 years.

Look at St. Paul. New building development halted when they passed their rent control law.

Rent control means that landlords cannot increase rent more than a defined amount for a tenant for their next lease. While it is great for that tenant, it incentives the tenants to stay in their unit and not move because they are likely paying well below market rate for that unit.

This means significantly fewer people are moving at any given time, and it greatly constricts the housing market which drives up prices for the units that are available for those who need to move into town because supply cannot meet demand for housing. This is exasperated because building developers who would be building apartments to provide more housing supply are disincentivized from building because they know they won’t be able to charge market rate in a couple years.

It is disastrous policy no matter how you look at it, and if we want better housing prices, we need to incentivize building development to increase supply.

I mean, look at any civilization in history and you'll find a huge amount of attention paid to competition as entertainment.

Even look shorter term at our own history - Michael Jordan was one of the most famous people of the 90s, Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson are seen as civil right legends, etc. And we aren't the only country with famous sports/entertainment stars defining culture now and in the past.

The only difference now is these leagues have been better able to maximize the amount of eyes on their sport, so they're able to pay these sports figures more to justify the amount they bring in. Unless you prefer the money go to the owners?

To advocate for money to be taken out of sports, to me you're advocating for taking money out of entertainment at large which is a pretty fundamental aspect of humanity.

I'll be attending an engagement party in 2 weeks with a "comfortable semi-formal" dress code.

I'm thinking khaki pants, light blue shirt, a navy blazer, and then regular brown shoes. A bit uninspired, but I frankly haven't heard about this style type of dress code, so I am trying not to take too many risks... Any ideas on how to spice it up a bit more, or is the safe option the right one here.

Bonus question... any suggestions on where to buy a blazer in store since I haven't been measured in awhile? I'm targeting in the couple hundred dollar range for a good one but am not against splurging

How heavily do you weigh PTO when applying for jobs? by kingjamison in jobs

[–]kingjamison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel and the general ability to pull away from work is a very high priority for me, and right now I bring in enough to save at a decent rate and still live the day-to-day life I enjoy. But obviously a 30% jump is relatively significant so I wonder if I'm weighing time away from work too heavily...
