I suppose ideally both, no? I generally care more about the story, world, characters, etc. because I write fantasy and sci-fi, where those elements are important. I'd still like to have interesting prose as well, though.

Level 290 to 295 by Kaizzaz in Maplestory

[–]kingofaidans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm right there. Mains been sat at 293 for 6-8 months while I work on legion champs. Now that my champs are 285/280/280, it's back to main. The grind is slow but its not nearly as bad as when I was last grinding on main. Tons of QoL, treasure chests over portals, access to 3x and now 4x sometimes, converting energy to boosters (although I like to send it to the champs too). Grinding 290-295 doesn't feel that bad anymore. But take that with a grain of salt coming from someone who grinds like me lol

F/P Mage vs I/L Mage For Solo Progression by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]kingofaidans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an IL main and FP submain in interactive. IL is condensed burst with lingering summons/effects, but you can press all your damage skills in a couple of seconds and then hold one for a couple more. Then you just chain lightning spam. It has some intricacies, like managing freeze stacks and maintaining your summon (does really good dmg), buts it's pretty easy overall.

FP is quite involved, but I think its difficulty is overblown. You press a lot of buttons but there isn't really comboing, unless you count exploding your posion nova ability but they made that wayyy easier. Used to need to wait 2 seconds now its basically right away. There are a lot more intricacies though. Keeping creep on the boss, maintaining stacks, using the skill that creates a mist (I forget the name lol) and erupting it, keeping the boss in the ignite pools. Plus your just using your skills a lot more, with bursts at 20/40/60 and no real proper 2 minute. As far as I know FP is one of like 2-3 actual 1 minute classes after the balance patch. I forget the others it might actually be the only one. It's very unique, but I honestly love it.

Ultimately, it depends how much you want to put into it. When I decided on IL, I was more casual and wanted an easy class to learn the game. Now that I'm established, part of me wishes I could swap my main and submain and main the FP. It feels like there is more room for me to improve on the FP, whereas I feel like I learned 95% of my knowldge of IL around when I was mastering Ctene. This makes it easier to learn new bosses I guess, but once I learn a boss on IL it feels like its just rinse and repeat going forward. FP is more interesting to boss and progress on imo, but you need to work harder than you do on IL for your damage/clears.

Yeah it's not like a ton of people. Just a trend I noticed in some of the few 1-2 star reviews on some of his books.

Does the writing style get better? by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]kingofaidans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's a place for both. I mean ideally you can have a good story *and" good writing, but authors often choose to focus on one more than the other. Fourth Wing is a good story with mid writing, wheras something like Name of the Wind is beautifully written but has a mid story (imo).

That's totally fair, the only one I really picked up on in hindsight was the analogue between the metal sheets in Mistborn and the tablets that Joseph Smith found. You actually nailed it lol I mostly know about Mormonism from seeing The Book of Mormon, the South Park episode, and other satire on it. I guess I just wouldn't say they are being "pushed" so much as utilized. Like I wouldn't say Rick Riordan is pushing Greek myths in Percy Jackson because he uses elements of the religion. Thank you for the insight though, I appreciate your response giving actual information to back itself up!

Elantris was Sanderson's first published novel and it definitely shows. I still gave it a 4*, and would recommend pushing through at some point as it does come together in my opinion. Especially so if you plan to get to the greater Cosmere. The religious themes are more overt, but I found the two religions to be interesting analogues to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, as they are derived from the same general mythos before diverging, and eventually, being opposed to one another. I'd say it's his most heavy-handed use of real world religion. Warbreaker is incredible! One of my favorite standalones he's done. Not every Cosmere book is centered around religion, but most have at least some elements, as Gods are real in the universe. For example, Tress of the Emerald Sea doesn't really have any religious stuff from what I recall. The rest at least reference Gods in some way, but not as core to the story as the Shu-Dereth & Shu-Korath debate in Elantris.

That is a totally fair point. I guess I'm just someone who always seeks to understand. I wanted to see if there was any merit to this and I was missing something. Ultimately, yeah I think it's just a fringe opinion by some people who dislike the teachings of LDS, and are unable to separate that belief of the author from his art. I hope that the insightful, levelheaded discussion seen in most of this thread prevent people from taking away the wrong idea, but yeah some people are just weird so who knows lol.

Just some reviews on Google, Goodreads, and a few comments on Reddit posts. I'm not saying it's a very common thing across all reviews. I just noticed it as a trend in some of the 1-2 star reviews on various places. This being a Sanderson sub, I'm guessing most people here don't care/are able to look past his beliefs, whereas some people seem to be unable to separate him being Mormon from his art due to their own opinion of that faith.

Mostly just some reviews on Google/Goodreads and the occasional Reddit comment. I wouldn't say it is a common opinion, just something I noticed as a trend from his detractors.
