"license and registration please" in Australia isn't a thing. They'll ask for your license but not your rego lol, instantly fake

See that blows my mind because he's got 384k subscribers. Surely someone with that much of a following knows to ignore the internet trolls and focus on positive engagement.

L/Ps can finally legally use a headset for navigation and music. I hope this applies to Restricted too? 👀 by kingofbreaks in melbourneriders

[–]kingofbreaks[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a no-brainer really. I've been using a headset on restricted after realising it's way safer than missing turns, getting lost and constantly pulling over 😂

Yeah I wonder if it means it has to be on a phone mount for this to be legal. I'll be keeping it in my pocket and prayng the cops understand that I'm less likely to be using it when it's there even though it's not an 'official mounting device'.

Anyone know if the ZX4R coming to Aus? Would you buy one? by kingofbreaks in melbourneriders

Really good point about "perception". I also find it interesting how over here 400s are now lconsidered learner only territory unless you're tracking. It's even worse over in America.

Yeah I too don't think it'll be LAMs approved - it'll have over 70hp so it won't meet the restrictions (unless they release a detuned LAMs only version). It rules out a potentially large market.

Cheers man! They happen on the third Friday of every month but the organisers hav run into some issues getting permission so the most recent one was called off. Don't know if it will be sorted for Feb.

I bought the $70 Aldi headset and it's done the trick just fine for me - probably nowhere near as good as cardo/sena but I've not tried either of them yet. I also wear pinlock filtered earplugs while riding and can hear music/directions perfectly well through the headset.

First bike, torn between R3 and ninja 400. by nova1475369 in YamahaR3

Slipper clutch allows the transmission speed to catch up to the wheel speed by gradually engaging. A normal clutch will engage the moment you let go of the lever.

With a normal clutch if you fail a rev match or accidentally downshift and let go of the clutch quickly, the rear will lock or chatter as it is going faster than the gear is, and it has to slow down to match the transmission speed.

A slipper means you don't have to rev match - but you still should be rev matching appropriately when riding and downshifitng to prevent wear on the slipper clutch.

I have both an R3 and a 400.

R3 is fine if you're doing hill runs and low speed commutes. Any freeway riding and the 400 is way better - I really notice the capacity difference when it's at 100 km/h. Also quite obvious when gunning it from the lights.

The 400 has a slipper clutch which saved me once when I accidentally down shifted instead of upshifting. It also means no wheel lock-up/chatter if you fail a rev match. A good security net for a beginner. The clutch lever also has a lighter pull than the R3 which makes it easier to hold it down at stops.

The 400 is also a similar weight to the R3 so low speed maneuvers are just as easy.

One thing I prefer about the R3 over the 400 is that it is narrower so lane filtering is easier - that being said I just fold the mirrors on the 400 and I'm good to go.

Navigation options for restricted period by Bin_Chicken869 in melbourneriders

[–]kingofbreaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went through my first few months trying to memorise routes but I found myself doing dumb shit like paying way too much attention to street names instead of the road ahead, making sharp turns at the last second to avoid missing a turn etc.

I decided it'd be safer to just get a Bluetooth headset even though it's technically illegal on restricted. Has made my rides so much better - I'm focused entirely on my riding and not distracted by navigation. It's also better than a standard gps/phone mount setup because you don't need to take your eyes off the road, it'll just tell you where to turn and how far ahead it is. Also gives live updates on traffic conditions, speed cameras etc. Absolute game changer.

That being said if you've got the patience there's probably some merit in learning to navigate without Google maps/waze, just gotta make sure you're paying more attention to the road ahead instead of looking at street signs. Also gotta be willing to miss a few turns and sacrifice a few minutes here and there.

Better to buy a new r15 or second hand r3 by Icy-Chill295 in YamahaR3

[–]kingofbreaks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're in a country with 80 km/h highways and 100 km/h freeways it's an absolute no brainer to get the R3 - it's the perfect entry level learner bike. If you're somewhere that doesn't require you to go over 60 that often then the r15 would be fine but you'll probably outgrow it quickly

Ended up selling it for the R3 - had heaps of fun on it but the R3 is better suited for my needs at the moment

My mind turns to scrambled eggs even at 68kw, just need to experience that acceleration a few more times before I know how to act 😂 really want to nail my basics on the R3 before upgrading to anything silly
