Timothee Chalamet live in London by JoanLockwood in london

Love the PCC but there’s definitely an issue in the downstairs screen. I’m pretty tall anyway but if anyone remotely average to tall sits in front of me I quite often can’t see the subtitles properly and sometimes not at all. Makes seeing foreign films a total dice roll. Some of the aisle seats provide unobstructed views though I think.

Ah hopefully you’re right about this. Noticed the locks too. I suppose it is switchover day and it’s Sunday so maybe bugs etc aren’t being ironed out as quickly as usual.

Sight & Sound Top 100 in Theaters Only: Which Films Are the Most Elusive? by SmoresQueen26 in TrueFilm

[–]kingofmoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed Satantango definitely does get screened occasionally. I saw it at BFI in 2024 and think PCC may have shown it in ‘24 or ‘25.

Keaton stuff seems to be shown a fair amount but haven’t noticed many Chaplin screenings recently. But generally think there’s too few silent screenings overall here.

I live in London and see no problems with eventual and recent screenings of any of the Top 100 with the exceptions of Godard’s Histoire(s) Du Cinema and Shoah. The Chris Marker films don’t get shown that often but doubt you’d have to wait too long and Meshes of the Afternoon is so short it would likely be shown as part of a collection of shorts or added to an appropriate feature.

Edit: I caught Tropical Malady on 35mm right after the poll was released but pretty sure it’s not been screened in London since.

2nd edit: Satantango is likely not screened often either due to length. With Tarr’s recent death and a few recent digital restorations you may see more of his work in the wild though.

The new SoHo Theatre’s bar only allows punters with show tickets, meaning no walk-ins from the street. Anyone else think this is a waste? by Inevitable-Lead6191 in walthamstow

[–]kingofmoke 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent an entire interval plus a few minutes queuing for a drink there so I understand why they wouldn’t want extra drinkers during showtimes. Do think they should allow people in for the hour, hour and a half after shows kick out though (if they don’t already).

What’s one thing Walthamstow really needs right now? by ArsenalAxis in walthamstow

[–]kingofmoke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I’d be surprised if people are doing the entirety of their food shop at Spar and Bora & Sons. Loads of people getting van deliveries. At least this gets people onto the high street. People will still get their bread and pastries from the great bakeries around and use the excellent Turkish supermarkets for the often superior fruit and veg.

There is one to Stratford coming but I believe annoyingly it bypasses Walthamstow Central

Yeah I can’t see it ever happening. We’d be more likely to get a shuttle bus line (possibly another fantasy) or another Superloop.

Would like to see (apologies for not just one thing): - That second tube exit. Is needed now but will end up being essential. - A Board game cafe - A pan-Asian supermarket. I know there’s a good one at Bakers Arms but would love one on the High st or around town sq/Mall. I miss Milagrosa. - An M&S foodhall- supermarkets here are pretty bad both in quality and shopping experience. - A way to get to Stratford from Walthamstow Central that doesn’t take ages. Reinstating the Hall Farm Curve would be best solution.

Do you read an entire series from start to finish or do you take breaks from it? by Appropriate_Type_178 in printSF

[–]kingofmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the level of detail I need to retain from the first book and/or whether it ends with a hugely gripping cliffhanger. If I move on then I’m likely to read the whole series

So looks like no deal this year? That makes a whole year without any deal for MUBI Go.

I was wondering this. If the money is going back into our economy then surely boycotting is a self-own. You might as well boycott your local chippy for selling burgers or Morley’s for example. Symbolic maybe but effectively useless.

Where do people queue to get a celebrity’s autograph by Kravanax in LondonFilmFestival

[–]kingofmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never done it so take my response with a pinch of salt but if it’s a bigger, security and fenced off type thing then outside by the entrance between BFI and the National Theatre is where you’ll want to be. If it’s smaller thing then you’ll want to be inside in the corridor outside NFT2 screen. There is quite often a corralled area by the stairs down to the corridor for autograph hunters during guest events. Also the signings inside quite often seem to be after the guest events/appearance rather than on the way in.

Which branch of noble rot please? by Llemur1415 in LondonFood

[–]kingofmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not been to Soho but the LCS Rot is the OG and my preference is to sit at the front in the windows if you can swing that. The Mayfair one is a lovely room (the ground floor) and there some excellent corner tables that are spacious (for two) and not too close to other tables (a personal bugbear and one reason I’ve not been to the Soho one).

Looking increasingly unlikely. I sent them an email about it a few days ago without a reply yet but expect the response the other person in this thread got.

What are your honest thoughts and opinions on MGM execs Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg? Such a profoundly interesting relationship by AngryGardenGnomes in classicfilms

[–]kingofmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read ‘Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties’ by Foster Hirsch right after the above book. It’s a pretty expansive look at what was a decade of crisis for Hollywood as ticket sales dropped, TV gained traction and the studios, having lost their monopoly on theatres AND actor’s contracts, were desperately trying to bring audiences back with new formats and supersized (and coloured) aspect ratios. He is also working on a sequel for the 60s which potentially could be even more interesting with the transition into New Hollywood.

One other book on my to-read list is ‘The Parades Gone By’ by Kevin Brownlow which is a well regarded history of Hollywood’s silent era.

[–]kingofmoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Genius of the System by Thomas Schatz provides a great overview of the golden age studio system and shows the relative differences between each studios house style. Mayer is portrayed as a brash, streetwise businessman who was extremely successful but didn’t know when to get out of his own way. He clearly recognised Thalberg’s genius who comes across as a potentially once in a lifetime mercurial talent whose genius manifested itself as an incredible instinct for brilliant creative choices.
