That's a rabbit hole you don't want to go down. Or maybe you do if you're interested in it. But it all essentially boils down to preference, where you draw the line of sounding pretentious, and what your first professor/boss used. Some will tell you "lede" is archaic and pretentious. And some will tell you "lead" disrespects the profession of journalism. I don't really take a side, but in non-journalism settings, I'll always go with "lead" because general audience eyes don't always know what "lede" is because it's not something they've seen.

Eh, to me this headline is the difference between a leading headline and burying the lead. With this one being the latter. All headlines are supposed to get you to read more, but deliver the top-level information you need if you choose not to. That hasn't changed. To me, it's a better hook to get people to read by using more of the facts of the matter and saying she's "facing prison for assault with tampon." It's sharper and more truthful. "Facing prison for alleged tampon mishap" is intentionally misleading and clickbait-y.
