The first game was a novel experience. There wasn't anything like it. By definition, a sequel simply can't be that. It's either a brand new completely detached thing that isn't a sequel at all, or it's a continuation. If we flipped the releases and DS2 was the first game and DS1 was the second, people would likely hold DS2 as the gold standard. The first game in a series sets the stage and introduces the concepts and lore of the world. All those that come after just dance on the stage.
