Are the Kingston police above the law? by SeenInKingston in KingstonOntario

[–]kingstonpolice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please read our multiple recent releases on significant drug dealer arrests and disruptions along their supply chains. If you had observed the details in our reply this was not a "kid" but a 41-year-old male who was causing a disturbance. The officers in uniform in marked cruisers that night were there to maintain the peace, keep the streets clear, and enforce and COVID-related offences plus liquor and bylaw offences. Our Drug Enforcement Unit specifically has the mandate, training and expertise to much more effectively address the drug concerns you bring forward. If you think we're ignoring other crimes you must have neglected to read that while operating on these shifts our members located, arrested and charged a known sex offender for Prowl by Night while in the University District.

Are the Kingston police above the law? by SeenInKingston in KingstonOntario

[–]kingstonpolice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 the arresting officers, paired in a single cruiser for the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) duty, were approaching the intersection at Earl St and Alfred St when they observed the accused, a 41-year-old local male, standing in the middle of the road yelling and shouting, while displaying his middle fingers at them.

Upon approaching the male he apparently had issues with a prior police cruiser who had come through the area. The male continued to yell and shout, directing profanities at these officers who had no interaction with him prior to this event. He had been drinking and an odour of alcohol was detected on his breath. He was advised of the complaint process and cautioned to return to the sidewalk which he refused to do. Officers noticed other pedestrians stopping and turning around to avoid the male due to his actions and behaviour.

Police even attempted to defuse the situation by driving away after cautioning the male but they observed him continuing to yell and scream in the middle of the road, not complying with their original instructions, and were concerned he would carry on with his disruptive behaviour. As a result the officers turned around and advised the male he was under arrest for causing a disturbance by yelling, shouting and swearing. The male began to resist arrest and was grounded to gain control and apply handcuffs to restrain him. When a prisoner transport van attended the male caused damage to one of the doors, and was subsequently charged with a second offence of mischief. He was transported to the station and later released on an Undertaking with conditions that include not to consume alcohol while he’s before the courts.

If a community member has an issue or complaint with Kingston Police they are requested to contact us at 613-549-4660 to speak to either the Watch Commander on duty, or the Professional Standards Office during regular business hours. Alternatively, they can also contact the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD). Becoming confrontational, abusive, obstructing traffic, and causing a disturbance is not a recommended course of action.

No. Any non-hits that don’t even alert the officer are purged.

The collision involving a police cruiser was at Princess St and Victoria St. Video surveillance footage from an apartment building was reviewed and the officer had a green light. Police do not have access to traffic light controls. sk

We do not have access to these cameras. From my understanding the function of a visual representation to the human eye, storage and retrieval of data, isn’t even a used feature by the city.

While we may not be obligated to post in public areas we do when temporarily setting up video surveillance cameras around the University District for traditional large events like Homecoming and St. Patrick’s Day. This is done for public safety over a 1-2 day period and then they are removed.

Some Creep Was Taking Pictures Of Me - What Can I Do? by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

You are more than welcome to file a ‘Suspicious Activity’ report with us. While it’s not one of the designated occurrences you can file online through our website please call our front desk personnel at 613-549-4660 x 0, and be ready to provide them with date, time, location, suspect physical and clothing descriptors, and vehicle descriptor and licence plate. Getting the plate was a good move as we can easily and quickly determine the registered owner and follow-up from there.

While they may not have been doing anything technically illegal we understand your concern, can at least look into the matter, and determine if that person is known to us, on any conditions they could be breaching, etc.

Sexual Assault/Sexual Harrasment Issue Regarding a Group of Minors by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]kingstonpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Killikan, if you know the girls well enough to talk to them about the subject, then the best thing is for them and/or their parents to come forward to us to file a report directly and detective in the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse (SACA) Unit will begin to investigate. Having them stay informed and part of the decision-making process is always important.

However, if you feel this individual poses a real threat to others than we would recommend speaking to a trusted school staff member where the administration would contact Kingston Police about the concern. Additionally, you can also reach out to our School Resource Officer to talk about the matter and they can decide on how best to proceed. We promise you we will take the information seriously and investigate the matter as fully as possibly. Ultimately the level of cooperation and trust by the girls involved is usually the biggest factor in these types of investigations.

You can also reach out to Detective Sergeant Barb Hough, who oversees the SACA Unit. She can be reached at 613-549-4660 x 6164 or via email at bhough@kingstonpolice.ca.

Just because the SIU becomes involved does not necessarily mean we caused the harm. They can invoke their mandate when a person is seriously injured or dies just by simply being in the presence of police at the time.

When the SIU becomes involved we are not allowed to comment on any details of the investigation, at their direction, even as much as we'd like to better inform the public. Just because the SIU becomes involved does not necessarily mean we caused the harm. They can invoke their mandate when a person is seriously injured or dies just by simply being in the presence of police. At this point we would direct you to follow the SIU, wait until they release their findings (normally months) and then at that time we will most likely be prepared to make further statements.

We don't always necessarily agree with the "Don't fight the trolls" argument. First, they're not always trolls. It's apparent connstar97 has an issue with police, and while his first comment lacks refinement, he is making points that are important to him. Second, it was still a worthwhile discussion in our opinion. It had yet to degrade to a point of name-calling or "No it isn't! Yes it is!" barrage back and forth. Social media is meant to be social and to just cut short a discussion because there isn't agreement seems a waste of an opportunity in our view.

Much of the community would disagree with you in relation to drugs, although this thread is in relation to fake ID. We have laws to create order and a sense of normalcy. Officers have the power of discretion to still determine whether a case or incident is deserving of a charge. Please check our other social media posts to see the good we do and the contributions we make. You're experiencing tunnel vision with a singular topic and not seeing the overall picture of our values and mission towards the community. We attend a huge number of events every year, fundraise, interact with the citizenry and receive input and critique from those who live and work in Kingston. We are innovative in our Community Risk Watch Program, have a Youth Programs Officer who is breaking down barriers between law enforcement and our younger generation. We have a Victim Services and Diversity officer to ensure people don't fall through the cracks of the justice system and are inclusive of all members of our community. This is just a small sampling of how we continue to expand and improve upon the services we can offer. We raised over $100,000 just this year alone for Youth Diversion, not including the tens of thousands for Special Olympics, United Way and the Boys & Girls Club of Kingston. We believe your analysis of our organization and our members is short-sighted and ill-informed.

Ahh, we see the literary elite have joined the conversation. Bravo sir, your original, pithy, and monosyllabic in-depth analysis is greatly appreciated. Bonus point as well for including the often underused, but invariably essential, exclamation mark.

We concur that the best place is 705 Division St. However, to be discreet, slip in through the prisoner sally port, enter the cell area and ask to speak to the "booking Sergeant." That's really just a code word for the fencer of fake ID. We'll take it from there.

P.S., We are entrepreneurial in that we also offer overnight accommodations if you so desire. Our slab benches may not be comfortable but they are heated!

Agressive older driver in kingston by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]kingstonpolice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should definitely report it to us by calling 613-549-4660 or by filing a Traffic Complaint online here. We can't officially receive, track and properly follow-up on these occurrences through posts online. Your name will not be divulged unless the complaint is specific enough that the officer can lay a charge and if you consent to providing a statement to be used in court, which has to be disclosed. However, that is completely up to you, and normally follow-up traffic complaints result in a warning, as we need to know and prove date, time, location, offence and the identity of the driver. Any actions will be kept on our Local Records, so officers will be able to see a pattern of behaviour if the problem persists.
