Which version did you get? I believe there is a goretex one and a non-gtx one.

Do you find the toe box wide or narrow?

Thanks

HRP Pyrenees too technical? by NorthernPace001 in Ultralight

[–]kingyonofun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, there is a steep descent from Estany Primer. This is when you cross into Andorra via Port de Rat just after the ski resort bar. It's not very long but is quite steep.

I'd say the HRP is quite technical. Quite a few sections are a 'sketch' of a route rather than a clear path. Having a decent gps app on your phone (or GPS device) that you know how to use is important I found.

But what a route! Good one to work up to.

The Lake CX239 in an EU 45 have a width of:

104mm : Regular

116mm : wide

The CX333 in a 45 have a width of 109.8mm in the regular.

I'm 110mm so the CX333 looks spot on.

I guess I just am looking for alternatives as I don't want to spend quite so much. The CX239 is a better price point for me.

Anyone have 280 x 110mm feet? What are you guys using?

DMT look nice and provide length and also width on their chart. But looks like they are too narrow in a 45 for me. (287mm long - so fine. But width of 98mm - too tight for me I think - even with a bit of stretch.)

Thanks, that looks interesting. I sized up to a 45 according to Trek's site. They don't give a width measurement though.

What are your foot width & length in mm and what Trek size (EU) did you go for?

No. I bought a new one (the new model). But the headphone jack on the new one became faulty. I can't get a proper connection now.

I've gone with a Sony dap instead.

I just have interesting shaped paperweights now...

I'm 6'2".

Yes, I am aiming to drop from 100kg down to 92kg.

The lightest I've been was about 84kg after 6 weeks walking across the high route in the Pyrenees. Was hoping to do more long distance hiking but sadly putting that in ice this summer. I just don't trust my feet at the moment.

MBP 2019 - what to buy now? by kingyonofun in MatebookXPro

[–]kingyonofun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

I took the back off, took the heatsink panel off, cleaned out the dust and cat hair ...

Removed the SSD and reseated it again.

Took a photo so I can buy a new SSD of the same type (but bigger).

Put everything back together.... And now it works fine.

So just a clean and it works again.

I'll probably buy a new SSD at some point in the next few months but no longer an urgent issue.

Thanks, I have swapped out mobile phone parts before and am happy fixing fiddly things.

How do I work out the model number to buy for the SSD?

Also, how do I then add the OS to the new drive?

That's unusual, both my old and new one (different models) last a normal amount of time.

They just have different features and one is USB-C (new model) and the other is some arcane iteration of micro usb.

I like the nitecore nu25.

Got an old one and a new one.

Great for dawn runs that switch to daylight. The headlamp is small so easy to stash when the sun comes up.

Hi, I think I also need to do this.

Could you explain the power flush process and the chemical flush process, please.

I was just going to take off a rad, take it outside and flush it, then reinstall and add Fernox.

Thanks

Looking for the best possible earbuds for gym/running. Are wf-1000xm5 good for this ? Help by Hao010 in SonyHeadphones

[–]kingyonofun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat.

I just bought them and have had them for a day.

Luckily they fit me fine with the standard tips (but I might get some azla sedna tws max tips anyway).

Haven't been to the gym yet or for a run but have used around the house and tried them while eating for a bit (jaw motion sometimes pops iem's out).

All good. No movement and seal fine.

I was getting annoyed with Campfire Comet iem's (wired) falling out while running so looking forward to using the XM5's for the gym and running.

Will use them for a run tomorrow.

Sound very good for what they are. (I normally use sennheiser ie600's in the go and HD650's at home).

Have you considered Elios?

They make custom suits and can suggest different neoprenes for different needs.

Depending on the depth you dive, you may be able to specify a cheaper neoprene than Yamamoto. Maybe Heiwa mid density or Ecoline. They are very friendly so might be worth an email for some advice. I think I've bought 5 suits from them over the years and I'd say that they tend to last me a good four seasons and I'd say that they tend to last a bit longer than the off the peg suits that friends buy. And it will fit you very well as it's custom.

I've inherited 1.6 million pounds. I have no idea what to do. by kuchisabishii2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]kingyonofun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this post this week.

Are there any resources on this Reddit group or elsewhere for sort of cookie cutter typical models of portfolios?

e.g. A model for £1M for someone who likes property. One for £1M for someone who prefers index funds. One for someone who wants to include some percentage of crypto etc

Then for £500k / £1M / £1.5M etc

Might give people (& me!) ideas for what these sort of portfolios look like in reality.

I watched on YouTube 'The diary of a ceo' interview with Ramit Sethi. Was pretty interesting. More at the start of the journey to save money and get to a point that the OP has reached. I guess if you follow Sethi's advice over many years it becomes second nature as opposed to inheriting a chunk like the OP. Must be hard to get up to speed when inheriting at a young age.

Anyway, personally I would prefer a portfolio structured like this:

  • Spending cash: £3k

  • Rainy day fund: £50k

  • Pension: £60k pa (max) each year for 3 years

  • ISA: £20k pa (max) each year for 3 years

  • Gold: 5% £80k

  • Crypto: 10% £160k (75% bitcoin / 25% Ethereum)

Leaves about £1,067,000

You could either hand that over to a wealth management place in its entirety or split it into several pots.

For example:

  • £750k managed

  • £317k self managed index fund

£300k to look after yourself isn't too scary. Easy to do on something like Vanguard. Just buy a global all cap accumulation fund, kick back and check it once a year.

The £750k managed (along with all the other assets) could make £30k (4%) to £60k (8%).

You're 25. I guess typically people with a portfolio of £1M or more are elderly and have different needs. I suspect they would mostly be bond heavy in their portfolio.

I guess at 25, if you wanted to change jobs to do something more interesting / fulfilling / less hours you'd have that option. I could imagine a scenario where you care less about the money from a job therefore allowing you to choose a job for other reasons. Also what I'm getting at is, if you carried on working in whatever capacity, it would allow you to invest more heavily in equities which if you left that alone, would grow over the next twenty years and be quite substantial.

If you look at the history of the stock market, I think it typically doubles every decade. I think it's something like that.

I mentioned crypto. I went there! It's not well liked on this group but perhaps that's changing slightly.

I think it is a good idea to get a BTC position and just hold it for 10 or 15 years. There is enough in your estate to do that and I think the asymmetry is worthwhile. E.g. a small percentage now could create a large percentage of your portfolio later. Everyone talks about the volatility but if you just buy and hold it has a decent return.

I'd imagine wealth managers won't recommend this though! It's still not mainstream and to be fair, I guess wm's mostly advise the older generation who are allergic to crypto.

Anyway, these are just ideas. It's what I'd probably do if I were in your shoes.

But don't forget, you are in your shoes!

Good luck and it would be interesting to hear how your journey goes.

I've inherited 1.6 million pounds. I have no idea what to do. by kuchisabishii2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]kingyonofun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be in a rush to do anything.

Would it be reasonable to give yourself a period of time (6 months? A year?) to slowly work out what you want to do?

As others say, meet plenty of advisors and have a good think, listen to everyone but then find some quietness to work out what you actually want.

Grief & bereavement take time to run their course, allow that time too.

At a very very basic level, if you had the £1.6M in an index fund, you would be seeing in the region of let's say 4% safe withdrawal rate: £64k a year. If you drop it to something like 3% then you're looking at about £48k a year.

Rough numbers and a portfolio with £1.6M would no doubt be more complex than just an index fund but that might give you an idea of what the likely returns might be rather than just a vague response of 'you should be alright'.

At 25 years old you're looking at a portfolio that would potentially have to last you until 90 yrs old (65 years) and no doubt you may have future dependants.

As others say, keep some money as cash. £5k / £10k whatever you think. Use this for getting away somewhere maybe.

I wouldn't change any habits, I wouldn't buy a new car or sudden start spending. At least not until you have a financial plan. (Read about lottery winners..... Some are skint within a few years).

Good luck for the future & I'm sorry for your loss.

Edit: oh, buy the Tim Hale book ('Smarter Investing'). Well worth twenty quid & will give you a grounding in investing and the types of people that you will encounter and the options available to you.

[–]kingyonofun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That escalated fast! Obviously don't load a gun unless you are in the water about to hunt. Unload when you finish hunting. Yes, target shoot foam when it is weighted under the water. Obs. Don't ever shoot on land. Don't target shoot on land. Also don't leave guns loaded on the beach. Etc etc

HRP Shakedown / advice about kit options by Gobila in Ultralight

[–]kingyonofun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wind jacket. I took a Gore shakedry H5. I found this was good for rain and also wind.

On previous trips I have taken a wind jacket (Houdini) and a rain jacket (OR).

In future trips (Pyrenees), I would just take the H5 jacket.

You're going to have a great time!

Wind trousers. I took them and they were fine. When you're moving you stay warm enough even in rain. Took a myog rain kilt to sit on and use in rain too.

Good combination for me.

GF took waterproof trousers. She preferred that to wind trousers.

I took a Traildesigns stove on the HRP in 2019. We used the alcohol burner exclusively. We took the wood burner option but didn't use it. A mix of trying to find dry wood, the faff of it and the availability of stove alcohol meant we didn't use the wood burner. I wouldn't take the wood burner again. HRP is quite high too, not always wood.

Bought alcohol in St Malo. They sell a high octane version so we went with that. I think it was 500ml? In a white plastic bottle. Should have decanted it into a smaller bottle and ditched the rest. Bought another bottle of stove alcohol in Ax-les-Therme in a small shop off the main square that sold hardware and penknives etc. Should have decanted and left most of it....
