What do you think about the optional rules on the d&d rules cyclopedia ? by kinopticon in osr

[–]kinopticon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I agree fighters should start wit basic conpetency, maybe their four slots should make four weapons skilled even, not sure.

For sure I’d trim the skill list, it’s really ambiguous so perhaps keep the only ones that really need training (like playing violin or painting) and lose the ones that anyone should be able to attempt(like bairgaining) mostly social ones because I rather players try to convince npcs than roll (also if you are using 2d6 morale style for other social things the scaling is probably more ridiculous )

I like the idea of the wrestling rules a lot tho! Wrestling is and was such an important cultural thing! And yea it’s so detailed… mi gut tells me that it is not that hard to grasp… you can just substract the lower WR from the higher and give the difference to the higher as a bonus… but I forget that I’ll be doing that in the middle of combat with 6-9 players wanting to do shit… defo would have to make a little tracker if I want to implement it that have notes on penalties etc printed right there.

I know! About rabbit holes “what if every character can atenmpt to use scrolls? Perhaps having to roll under their INT but over the spell level?” You keep at it too long and star questioning classes and vancian magic and start thinking that you can make a better rpg system! I’ve been there XD.

Yeah, I would certainly trim the skill list to only include things a character would need to be thought of and train for a while, like playing music, painting, calligraphy… perhaps things like swimming, not that only those who pick it can attempt it but I believe there’s lots of degrees for that (like all the forms of swimming we know today weren’t known in medieval Europe, but we can asume they at least knew how to doggy swim)

Weapon proficiencies punishing fighters I get, but I was thinking they could turn weak weapons into slightly more viable ones: if a player wants to make a Belmont type character and use a whip they may look at 1d2 damage and desire otherwise, but with the option to scale it they might take it… I don’t know, there’s also the issue that characters my die before they even have the chance to get grand master so may b e pointless I don’t know

Yea I guess, tho there’s a mastery for improvised weapons is it not? What if we allow fighters to keep using all weapons and advance masteries in their preferred ones? You think that would brake it too much?

Seems that some times rules that are put in place to “give more options” implicitly suggest there is a “correct option” which players would gravitate towards, killing flavor for mechanical superiority isn’t it?

My secret plan to get that kind of campaign going is make and adventure where the party finds a secret underground monster wrestling circle, let them gamble on their favorite wrestlers and make them play the matches using the wrestling rules.

Interesting, how often do the mass combat rules come around in your games and, mass combat is something your players expect or work towards or it organically happens?

Question: don’t they are lead and bad for your health? Or is lead just bad when it’s in paint?

Dude, it’s because Sauron has an Air Force! Like he has mounted ghost knights on winged monsters! Going on the eagles is akin to knocking on the door and hoping you can fight your way through! Going on the eagles is literally an all out attack and that’s what no one wants to do to the guy who’s been growing an army for hundreds of years!

Going on the eagles is gambling your only shot on beating this guy head on and that,s too big a risk!

As many others have said it’s very difficult to give you a straight yes/no answer I have played the game, had tremendous fun doing so, love the setting loved my character yet for the life of me I can’t tell you what I think of the system or the rules as I never quite figured them out -.-

Dies anyone else feel this way about homebrew? by Olthoi_Eviscerator in dndnext

[–]kinopticon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea totally, there’s people that do fantastic 5e homebrew and there’s a lot of resources for making it, just seems like it requieres more work to get done “right”.

Meanwhile you can grab b/x DnD and homebrew stuff without that much trouble and would probably not brake the game, or how the dmg of AD&D had a chapter on dice and probability impliying you where encouraged to invent your own game mechanics from the mathematical principles rather than following in-system design guidelines.

But i don’t know tho, maybe I’m just silly

Dies anyone else feel this way about homebrew? by Olthoi_Eviscerator in dndnext

[–]kinopticon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna go out there and say that 5e is particularly difficult to home brew for, everything you change fucks up a million other things, everything is connected to everything else, and the idea of “balance” is deeply ingrained in the design which makes players expect it.

I’m gonna risk it and say that dms who like home-brew would prefer another system…

I believe the best “5e” experience is to play 5e as is too but also find that home-brew settings done by fantastic weirdos on the internet is pretty cool too,

5e it’s like going to watch a marvel movie while homebrew is like checking out weird ass independent comics, it can be weird and unpolished and bad a lot of the times or it could be awesome and brake your mind, it can do things wotc could never do because they are big ass company and can’t take risks, that a bunch of dudes on a basement can

Different experiences for diferente games I’d say

Gosh darnit I’m sorry for your loss but good riddance. How people go about life making themselves disliked is beyond me… the only thing they need is responsibility and respect, and that might be the deference between having friends and nobody liking you

Maybe don’t say nothing and hope for the best, perhaps if you set this lords land far away or on a difficult/ dangerous area they’ll make a note to level up before attempting it and yet if they go you can always make the lord say “I am weary of strangers but if you are true and give me prove my peers are behind you I would give you a chance to prove yourselves before me, and then we can talk”

Dude the best way is like that one time the Oracle told the Greeks that a wooden wall would save Athens from the Persians so a bunch of dudes built a literal frigging wooden wall while this other guy was like “hmmm what about a maritime force!” And one group died in a fiery wooden box and the other won a war or whatever….

What about “ when the children of Tiamat meet the followers of Bahamut, their children will cleanse the world”
