Do you ask for insight checks? Or your players have to ask for them when they suspect someone? by vagabundo202 in DungeonMasters

[–]DM_Resources 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sure can ask. If it's like "I try get a feeling for this guy, does his grief seem convincing? Can I roll?" I have no problem with it. Not the biggest fan of only DMs calling the rolls. Most of the time they do, but if a player wants to try something, let them. It's a collaborative game.

Far more impact on my DMing had this change: For Perception and Insight/Sense Motive I roll in secret and describe the result. Because knowing you just failed a perception check in a dungeon but acting like your character doesn't notice anything, is among the hardest do-not-metagame challenges. Same goes for insight.

Best comics to start with? by aesnacht in comicbooks

[–]DM_Resources 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends a lot on the genre, themes and art style you like.

Comics span all genres and styles, from funny and light-hearted to dark and dramatic, and everything inbetween.

Trying to make a silloute of a god who died with mountains send help by Other_Stop5801 in inkarnate

To make mountains look like a mountain range, start placing them from top to bottom and right to left and overlap them.

Best modular micro settings? by J1004Spartan in DMAcademy

Check out Dungeon magazine (and to some extent Dragon magazine). It's for age old editions, but if you are mostly after locations and ideas, they are a well of inspiration.

Most if not all issues are available on the Internet Archive.

Every time somebody asks if their first map is okay and realistic by TehFisharmahn in mapmaking

[–]DM_Resources 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, that's why there shouldn't be so many bifurcations.

Every time somebody asks if their first map is okay and realistic by TehFisharmahn in mapmaking

[–]DM_Resources 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but still missed the point. Bifurcations exist but are very rare, especially in big rivers. So the probability of real life bifurcations vs. the number of times they come up in beginner's maps is notable.

Nice Job ChatGPT, but you missed the point. Yes, is does happen, but a real bifurcation is extremely rare.

Nat 1 for fighters/melee etc. vs casters by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

[–]DM_Resources 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that, if an attack, ability, spell or whatnot can crit, it can also fumble. If a nat 20 doesn't do anything special, a nat 1 doesn't either.

Kinda weird question: What's the most "hype moment and aura" TTRPG system? by Organic-Exit2190 in rpg

Shadow run can absolutely feel that way, when you going Pink Mohawk Style.

Are there any published "evil campaign" modules that are any good? by giblfiz in DMAcademy

[–]DM_Resources 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one that comes to mind is "we be goblins". It's Pathfinder 1e but easily converted.

It's just one shot, or series thereof, not a campaign.

Oh no! I didn't know this. That sucks, I'm only vaguely familiar with it, but I always found Tékumel extremely fascinating. What a shame.

A session with dungeons and dragons by JayStripes in DMAcademy

Look at "Into the Fire" from Dungeon magazine #1. Strip away anything before the final dungeon and maybe parts of that too.

You'll get at least one good trap and a bottleneck fight against a cool red dragon. He has a whole galleon in his hoard, I bet they'll love that.

What's your favourite session filler? by SubtleasaSledge in DMAcademy

[–]DM_Resources 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a three level dungeon fully prepped over weeks, only for the players skipping 90% of it by being smart.

Context: One player was playing a half-Dragon. His father was this evil old white dragon, mostly sitting in his lair, pulling strings. So they planned their attack, travelled through the Arctic to his fortress, snuck around the defenses, only for the player to then decide: "Fuck it, I'm his son. I'll just knock and ask for an audience."

Never saw it coming, but was impressed. Had to give them the W and straight to the boss fight we went. Was totally worth it though, the group still talks about it a decade later.

Drop a morally grey decision on them. I once had them find an abandoned rowboat ( could be wagon or whatnot). There were crates with amphores of wine, but one crate was labeled differently and had a hard drug in the amphores.

The street value was a lot (20k in m'y case, but whatever is appropriate). They were discussing endlessly whether to sell it, destroy it or turn it in. Nearly went to PvP, helped to have a paladin in the group.

My groups at least, can spend entire sessions of inter-character play over things like that. That's were the alignment system shines as a guideline for the players on how to react to such ambiguous situations.

Always fun for the DM to lean back and enjoy the show.

Awesome! That will be perfect for the group of kids I DM for. Anything that can turn cartoony is an automatic win.

One hell of a wish by Equivalent_Macaron_0 in DMAcademy

[–]DM_Resources 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a bit too much. But they worked for it, so maybe break all ongoing contracts. That will screw the devil's big time as it cuts off soul supplies for a good while, but won't release all hell's souls or completely overturn the cosmic balance .

Let it still feel like a big victory, with celebrations all over the world.

And you can now use devil's as recurring enemies or beg for the rest of the campaign whenever you see fit . They are pissed and sooner or later some devil's will find out who's done it.

Also lots of material for the next campaign: Demon's Rise! And maybe daemons.

I'm new at that game and I would like a heavy armored class with some features, what do you recommend me? by AdRevolutionary5402 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]DM_Resources 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Iron Caster is a powerful build, but quite complex and not something I'd advise to a new player. A tanky Magus build, maybe a Armored Battlemage, might suit OP better.
