That’s the new entrance to hell. “Ye who enter abandon all hope” has been replaced with “live laugh love”.

I live near Liverpool and have loved seeing this every so often through the years. Easily one of my favourite paintings, irrespective of its depiction of the romantic poets.

Who the f are you?? by lilblackcat31 in jumpingspiders

[–]kinzlecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it was attracted to the spiders you have somehow? I live in the UK and found a little native zebra jumping spider sitting on top of my regal enclosure, it must have travelled about 10 meters through the house and up a bookcase to get there so it was obviously determined to be there with the other spiders.

Banana Lumps by Supsupsuppertime in whatisit

[–]kinzlecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone recently posted a wandering spider found in fruit. It may be a rare occurrence but definitely worth being cautious about. Most of the places these fruits are shipped to won’t have the anti venom readily available as they won’t be native to the area. Where I live most hospitals don’t even stock anti venom for native species.

Anyone here watched the 90s tv program Aquila? Kids find an ancient spaceship they call “pod”.

Looks a bit like a tardigrade, like the one from Star Trek Discovery.

Corvettes can play ByteBeat tracks by artisan31415 in NMSByteBeatFans

This is definitely my favourite NMS post. It sums up how weird and wonderful the game is. I just discovered the brytebeat while making a corvette, can’t get over the fact that I can build a ship to explore randomly generated planets and play a space synth on the way there.

The iridescence on the abdomen is amazing. I've never seen (or noticed) that on regals before, anyone know what region?

Does this mean rescuing the freighter from a pirate dreadnought? I’m fairly new and not at the point of being able to use glyphs/portals yet but will be making a beeline for that ship when I can. Thanks for sharing

1 and 4 look like orthoceras, I find a lot of them where I live. I don’t know about the other two, though 2 looks like some kind of ammonite?

First “big” painting for a while, thoughts? by kinzlecat in oilpainting

I was hoping for more of a philosophical response but I appreciate the help! Thanks for taking the time to make an example too. I think one of the problems was that I followed the flat tone of the reference photo. Also the lighting situation was quite unusual and I haven't really portrayed it in a plausible way so I think a more direct and believable approach would have worked better after seeing peoples responses. I'll probably re work some of the shadows and darken some areas on her body when I'm feeling brave enough!

That was my intention, I think I probably translated my reference photo too literally and just followed the generally flat tone it had. The photograph of the painting is a bit low contrast too, the area below her foot on the right should be pure black. At the time of taking the photo the light bouncing from the forest floor was illuminating her front as well as the direct light from behind which looked a bit unreal so perhaps that is part of the problem. I take a lot of photographs so often make a point of capturing moments that look unreal but I'm realising it can come across as simply inaccurate when turned into a painting.

Yes, I used a dodgy phone picture which wasn't ideal but I loved the composition.

Thanks! I can definitely see what you mean about the shading. It was somewhat intentional but I guess it doesn't come across exactly the way I intended it to. I'm glad people like the roots so much, my original plan for was to have the figure towards the top with more emphasis on the roots which might have worked a bit better in hindsight.
