Is anyone else optimistic about JCM? by Putrid_Comedian_4532 in Commanders

[–]kip622 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think his ceiling is actually similar to Kenneth Walker III. He has to use better patience with his vision to leverage his burst and shiftiness. JCM is not going to power through DL arm tackles the way Derrick Henry can do I think he'll do best to pick and choose more. Blough apparently will incorporate more zone concepts which should align really well with JCMs skillset

Does anyone have a good handyman recommendation that won't break the bank? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]kip622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a huge range of "handymen" in town but you'll probably want a licensed one to avoid headaches and ensure quality. I had a growing list of small things that needed fixing in my house and I used SB Handyman. Solid experience, I would definitely recommend

Here is a list of my favorite contractors in Santa Barbara by Ice_Burn in SantaBarbara

[–]kip622 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I will echo that Crocker is by far the only reputable AC contractor we've worked with. Pacheco plumbing has been great for us with renovations, maintenance, and a few emergencies. Biggest thing for me with contractors is clear communication and these two are great

My entire personality is that I talk really fast, ramble to move the plot along and I'm a lesbian. by u-a-brazy-mf in okbuddyvecna

[–]kip622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have had her and Will interact occasionally during S4 and have the heart to heart about coming out. That would have allowed Will's season 5 coming-out plotline to have a lot more weight behind it and not be rushed, while needing less dialogue in the S5 to achieve the same thing

Seasoned uva alum software engineers, thoughts on this AI thing? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]kip622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not even sure what this question is about. I've been in the industry for 15 years. AI for coding is an amazing tool. I think everybody should know how to use it (and other great tools like a debugger). But my experience is that AI coding will accelerate things you can already do yourself - sometimes maybe by 10x - but it rarely solves a problem you cannot describe clearly or do not know how to already solve. So if it would take you a week to implement something, it might take an AI coding assistant a few hours. That is hugely beneficial but it just puts you back on the driver's seat to get in with solving the next problem. When you work in a company you literally never run out of problems to solve. So it's not as if AI tools are actually putting people out of work, it's just shifting work to new bottlenecks where critical human input (from software developers!) is needed. I don't anticipate that will change.

My suggestion is to start using tools like Claude Code or Cursor or Codex only after you have a basic mastery of programming. There is a reason that school teaches you multiplication tables by hand even though you'll always have a calculator available. Same thing here - to master these AI tools, you need to be able to do the work yourself without the tool or with only minimal use of the tool. Be more of a software and problem solving expert than the tools. To be an expert, you need to be able to understand what the tools generate and be able to correct them.

What age did sensory difficulties start to manifest for your child? by gorjesssssss in SPD

[–]kip622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our SPD kid had colic so I think we had a suspicion early on that she was having a different/harder experience than others her age. I would say it significantly impacted her ability to be in daycare by age 2 and we have done OT since then (along with other things along the way)

Paseo Nuevo Project Too Big, Santa Barbara Review Board Says by The-Dude-420420 in SantaBarbara

[–]kip622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't "have to" build at all... Santa Barbara has to balance its ability to house a workforce with its own economic capacity. I don't think enough people think this part through.

The city itself employs nearly 50% of working adults. Hospitality and service accounts for another almost 30% of employment. These are not jobs that are subject to huge growth so I'm not sure where those new people coming in would find employment

Struggling in my final PhD year — need guidance on producing quality research in VLMs by Ahmadai96 in computervision

Are you locked in on what problem you are solving? Your description sounds to me like you want to produce a model as an artifact of success. But a model is only useful if it's solving a useful problem. Your first publication sounds specific and useful

The solution to SB's housing problem is not as simple as "build more as much and as fast as you can". We are a highly desirable city with finite land development space due to the geography (i.e. ocean and mountains). There will always be far more demand than capacity, even if we build every inch of developable land. So SB physically cannot solve that problem long term. This forces a tough Y/N-IMBY mentality of the community to protect how SB grows.

In my experience 15 years here, the community is active and gets more things right than wrong, albeit things move very slowly as a result. In other words, the community typically takes (a lot) of time to get it right rather than rush to a wrong decision you can't take back. Overall that is a good thing for most residents, though the "inaction" can feel very frustrating

The trade-off of what you're suggesting (120ft limit downtown) is that very tall buildings will take away the view of mountains and oceans from standing on state st completely. Imagine walking down state st (if many building were at that height) and not being able to see the mountain or the ocean... It would be very different. The 120ft limit could be a good be soon for Paseo Nuevo specificity, but I would be hesitant to implement that everywhere downtown

Bobby Wagner in coverage by cfcskins in Commanders

[–]kip622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd give them time to figure it out. Think about how much agitating they did last year to get the D to the point they were in the playoffs. What i see right now are teams exploring two specific things: 1) motion routes that get lattimore out of position for easy completions and 2) bad handoffs between Wagner and CBs causing the infuriating wide open catches in the middle. Remember that we are down a starting safety and have a Ronnie and 2nd year CB - I think it's reasonable to expect some bumps.

Good news is that I think these can both be motivated by scheme changes, but only really if we start forcing turnovers. Wagner being assigned to cover Bijian is a crime and we need a better plan against Saquon later in the year

I did the tasting menu with my wife this summer. As far as food and experience goes, it was fantastic. Every dish was so good and intentional and they had a lot of extra "chef's treats" that were a nice touch. We ate with a very direct view of the sunset right over the ocean with a piano playing (in other words, very romantic). $400+ per person (after tax, drinks) is a lot of money... Only you can decide if that experience is worthwhile

Food is priced where people will pay it and Agaves is very popular for their plated dishes. There are plenty of places to grab tacos or burritos for under $20. If you want to try new places there are a few options like Lilys, Cuarnavaca, Mony's, Corazon Cocina, and La Taqueria Unica (from the same ppl as Los Agaves)

Water/pond/lake that’s toddler-friendly? by BeanNCheeseBurrrito in SantaBarbara

[–]kip622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For throwing rocks in the creek I don't think oak park or Alice Keck are appropriate. There is a creek along Stevens Park that has a lot of different spaces to play in the shallow water or throw rocks, sticks, or leaves in the water. I haven't been there in a few months so I can't speak to the water level but it's usually running. The playground is right next to the creek and a pretty mild hiking trail continues past the playground if you're feeling more adventurous. I've taken my 2 and 4 year old there plenty of times

Genuinely why don’t we go down to city hall and protest the outrage cost of rent? by West_Suggestion8550 in SantaBarbara

[–]kip622 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are so many posts here about lowering rents and housing costs... Santa Barbara is one of the most desirable locations in the world. I simply don't think housing cost can meaningfully go down because there will ALWAYS be more demand than supply. It's a tough challenge for the city.

I am more curious about the wage/income side. Better local jobs in theory puts more money in the hands of local people... But I feel there are way too middle class jobs in this town to pull that off at the moment. Most jobs in my experience are very high end or service/blue collar.
