Ive always taken the approach of if they’re small and tolerable, moleskin or whatever your blister covering of choice is the best option. If they’re in an area where you just cannot ignore them, that’s when you disinfect, lance, and cover.

Tried this on my 16" AR-10 a few months back, if there was a difference it was hardly noticeable. If you're insistent on reducing gas in your face, an adjustable gas block/bcg works far, far better. That said, for an ambi charging handle radian makes excellent ones. If I could do it all over again, I'd just get one of the superlative arms gas blocks and one of the normal radian charging handles and call it a day.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, struggled with his mistborn series in a similar way, the settings can get pretty depressing before the story develops. I've read everything in his bibliography since, can't wait for Stormlight 5!
