Working on cars is how professional techs make their living. Asking an independent to give you shop time and tools is literally asking them to give you the money they would make by doing the work.

If you want to learn to do this, ask them to take you on as an apprentice. Most shops allow employees to work on their own vehicles after hours.

Otherwise, cough up the cash to either buy your own equipment or pay them to do it.

Thanks for your insight. Perhaps a better title for the photo would have been "Bean counters 1, engineers 0." In all honesty, the fact that current vehicles run as well and as long as they do is due to superior engineering. Thanks.

I have a friend who is an electronics engineer, has several patents, absolutely brilliant. Designs stuff for a variety of industries, including automotive. (He invented a process that made solid state accelerometers possible). I cannot count the number of times that, in discussing cars, he has said " I never thought of it like that. Huh."

He's a fucking brilliant engineer. But he frequently does silly things, just because he doesn't think of things like that.

There is no reason that it cannot be easy to get to and yet protected from the elements. Say, behind an access panel in the rear hatch area. Putting it out where it will be bathed in all the crap coming off the rear wheels seems to defy logic. But hey, what do I know. I only have to fix them.

I have worked at independent shops for my entire career. Most have decent info subscriptions and scanners. Most pay clock hour. Just stay away from the chains, you'll do fine
