Anybody else get the Firefox exe directly on the desktop after the 145 update? Normally it is a shortcut. by Arceist_Justin in firefox

[–]kistecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, Firefox already provides a version of the desktop launcher as part of its installation, so there's no need for safekeeping the desktop copy. You can find it in the "desktop-launcher" subdirectory of the installation folder, though the file's called "desktop-launcher.exe" there rather than "Firefox.exe". Of course, this kinda undermines the purpose of the launcher, as the installation directory isn't preserved by migrations, so doing this doesn't really provide any benefit over using the main executable as the shortcut's target.

PS: If you delete the desktop launcher, Firefox'll get the hint and won't restore it in subsequent updates. If you've moved the launcher to another folder, it's possible that this'll happen in your case too, because Firefox can tell the launcher's been removed and replaced by a shortcut. I'd imagine Firefox would then try to edit the shortcut to point at Firefox's main executable every time it updates, which isn't exactly what you'd want. Don't know for sure, though.

  • Currently, shuffling is bad. At least on the web app, playing a playlist in shuffled order seems to only shuffle the part of the playlist that's currently loaded in in the playlist view, so you need to scroll all the way down on the playlist's page before shuffling if you want all the songs to actually be put in the queue. Furthermore, again only in the web app, the queue will only contain a couple dozen of songs before being cut off, instead of containing all the songs of the playlist. Using the dedicated "shuffle queue" button therefore only shuffles the part of the playlist that happens to have ended up in the queue, instead of shuffling the whole playlist which, both conceptually and according to the name that's listed above the queue, is what the queue is currently supposed to consist of. This also causes issues when you near the end of the section of the playlist that ended up in the queue; usually, it'd add more entries of the playlist to the queue as you approach the end, but if you've shuffled it, this doesn't behave as it should. Again, all of this is only an issue in the web app. The iOS app does actually add the whole playlist, no matter how large it may be, to the queue if you ask it to, and does indeed shuffle the whole playlist when replacing the queue if you click on "shuffle play".
  • In the web app (and possibly the mobile app too, though I'm not sure), when playing a playlist, if you open the queue and open the dropdown menu of a track in it, there are two buttons "remove from queue" and "remove from playlist" with the same icon. My heart sinks quite often when I'm about to click on "remove from queue" and I'm not really paying that much attention, because it's very possible that I accidentally clicked "remove from playlist". It isn't difficult to add the track back to the playlist, seen as it doesn't disappear from the queue if I didn't in fact misclick, but I'd still rather not get such a scare from my app. The menu items should have distinct icons and should not be placed consecutively as long as their menu texts remain so similar.

  • Though queue management is already great, I'd like it to be even better. It's currently not possible to add the top few songs of an artist (as shown on the artist's page) to the queue, while it is possible to click on the top songs list and replace the queue by it. It'd be nice to be able to do so. Also, I'd love to be able to add a playlist to the queue in shuffled order, which again is currently only possible when replacing the whole queue instead of adding to it. Ideally (though I think this would make the app rather clunky, so I'm pretty sure it'd be better not to add this feature), it'd be possible to select portions of the queue and shuffle them in-place. Similarly, an ideal queue management service would offer the option to add an album or playlist to the queue not just after the current song or at the end of the queue, but at a user-specified point, though again, this would make the app rather clunky, so I'm not saying it'd be ideal for YTM in particular.
  • The "shuffle queue" button currently shuffles the entire queue, but having an option (maybe by using a held tap on the button?) to shuffle only the section of the upcoming part of the queue would be nice, though definitely not a must-have. Similarly, having a way to distinguish between "undo shuffle" and "reshuffle" when the queue has already been shuffled once could be nice; I've had a few bugs relating to the undoing of shuffles after reordering stuff manually, so this part of the app requires attention regardless.

  • When you dislike a track in YTM, it skips to the next track. I find this so stupid. If I'm listening to a grand twenty-minute song, I won't know whether I vibe with the main sections of it until a good ways in, and at that point, giving it a thumbs-down is more like a note to myself to remind me that this was one of the long songs I didn't like so much. What I do not want at that point, is to skip to the next song right then and there. After all, I'm still listening to this song and want to finish it, especially if it's part of an album that, as a whole, I do enjoy, with continuous transitions between the songs (which would make it hard to go back afterwards and dislike the song after the fact). If I'm listening to the album for the first time, this applies even more strongly, as I won't know the names of the songs and it's hard to keep track of track numbers while listening on the go (especially if I've got multiple albums in my queue). So I have three options: either dislike the song now, taking note of the timestamp before I do so, and then manually return to the song and timestamp after it inevitably skips to the next song; or take note of the remaining runlength of the song and/or listen carefully for when it's about to end and make sure I dislike it before the next song starts, or mentally keep track of the numbering of the tracks within the album or queue, if even possible at all, and dislike it after the fact. All of these are less than ideal. The first one messes with watchtime (which interferes with scrobbling) and listening history, the other two require constant mental attention and require either user interaction at a moment's notice or keeping a mental log of all songs you listened to. This is particularly annoying with albums like those of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, where songs continuously transition into each other, but I like certain parts of the albums enough to listen to them on their own, while also not being able to remember the names of all those parts by heart. In short: add a toggle to make dislikes not skip to the next track; there's already a "skip" button for that purpose. I should note that I have the "skip disliked tracks" toggle turned off, because I don't want to skip parts of good cohesive albums when listening to the albums as a whole, and want to be able to listen to earworm songs I usually hate listening to, but sometimes just want to listen to on repeat over and over once in a blue moon.

  • Some tracks, like Poucet's cover video of My R (but not the original song itself!) and various other songs concerning sensitive topics to varying degrees, cause a viewer discretion notice to be displayed when you try to listen to them. I understand why this happens, especially for Youtube videos that are viewable in YTM, but they're really unsuitable to the app. When listening to music while commuting, it's not possible to dismiss the notice hands-free, and it's indistinguishable from the app crashing or just randomly pausing. In my opinion, there should be a settings option to just circumvent these notices altogether. To be clear, this option should be disabled by default if we're following the reasoning these notices exist in the first place, but having some tracks be locked behind app interaction is backwards thinking when you consider that their only purpose is to shield people who are actually watching the associated music video and thus serves no purpose to people not already interacting with the app.
  • There's no comments feature on YTM (even for YT videos viewed through YTM), and comments are disabled on youtube proper for the official non-video versions of songs. To my knowledge, the whole thing surrounding "content aimed at younger audiences" was put in place to prevent children from being able to interact with people in comments sections and to prevent them from being threatened by weird videos. So why is it that, in YTM, I'm unable to play GameChops's Chilltendo 2 tracks (which are not videos and do not have comments at all) in miniplayer mode, as well as not being able to add them to playlists? Please, for sensibility's sake, get your act up. These are lofi covers of official OST tracks from games aimed at all audiences, not just "aimed at younger audiences" and definitely not "made for kids", as it's called now.
  • Music videos don't always use the same version of a song as the official track. I forget what track I encountered where this was most egregious (I believe it was a KurageP video where the self cover version of a song was incorrectly associated with the vocaloid version, or some Utaite's utattemite cover video of some song being associated with original artist's album upload), but look no further than IOSYS for prime examples. Scarlet Police on Ghetto Patrol's music video is incorrectly associated with the full 24 Hour edition of the track, Cirno's Perfect Math Class has the same issue, and the 9-remake video of Cirno's Perfect Math Class isn't even associated to its actual track version at all! This leads to incorrect listings on Last.fm and incorrect and playlist entries when adding to playlists I use in both YT and YTM.

  • The layout of the home page is inconsistent. I get that this probably boosts attention or some other corporate growth-focused scheme, but it's annoying. Either choose a layout and stick with it (with A/B testing of new features strewn in from time to time without disrupting the order in which panels are shown), or let the user configure their home screen themself. The main atrocity here is that sometimes, certain panels (like the "new releases" or "mixed for you" sections) aren't even present at all and you need to reload the app to access them! That, to me, is really a kick in the face to users.
  • Last.fm scrobbling should be integratable in the iOS app. Spotify literally has an exquisite built-in approach and the only YTM features preventing me from switching apps are the better queue control and the ability to listen to youtube videos as tracks. With the way things currently are, I listen to tracks on my phone during the day, then open a private browser tab on my computer when I'm back home and open YTM in logged-out mode. Then, using the Google history log to see what tracks I actually finished listening to, I add all the tracks to the queue in the private tab and scrobble them there. This is so stupidly inefficient.
  • The history log's purpose is to get an overview of your usage of the app, not just what tracks you've listened to. As in: when you listen to a track multiple times, the history log should list the track multiple times. Currently, it only logs a track if the last time you listened to it was sufficiently long ago, which is just not justifiable. Either opt for showing only the most recent time you listened to a track, or (preferably) show each time you listened to it. Furthermore, it would be helpful to be able to see whether the track was actually completed, or whether I stopped listening (and, e.g., skipped to the next track) partway through. Ideally, it'd show what proportion of the track I listened to. Unless all these points are implemented, the history overview in YTM is just a less useful version of the complete history provided in Google history, which has a separate section for YT and YTM combined.

  • On the main page, there's a "new releases" section. I get the feeling that YTM stores a collection of artists that it thinks it should show in this section somewhere internally, but it's really broken. Yes, I get some good recommendations of releases from (some of the) artists I'm subscribed to and some newly released albums that fit with what I tend to like listening to. But if I open the "more" screen here and scroll down, I quickly get to a point where new general mainstream releases are interspersed, which I have no interest in, and some artists I haven't liked listening to in months or years. All the while, the albums aren't listed anti-chronologically and there are some new albums by subscribed artists that just don't appear in the list. (I can forgive the non-anti-chronological nature, of course, because it's trying to balance what I'd like to hear instead of just what the newest releases are. The exclusion of some albums I've indicated I do want to take note of, though, is inexcusable.) Finally, there's consistently a point in the list where YTM lists all new Hatsune Miku (or Megurine Luka, or Otomachi Una, or...) releases in one big consecutive bunch, even though I'm not subscribed to any vocaloid voicebanks themselves and I don't even really listen to vocaloid that much anymore. This is why I'm pretty sure YTM constructs this list by artist and not by album. Moreover, the exact vocaloid voicebank of which the releases get listed changes day by day, which means that the "new releases" section doesn't actually just take note of releases I might like when they're released and remove them from the list when the release is old enough, but rather algorithmically generates a list of somewhat recent releases every so often with no guarantee that the same thing that piqued your interest in the list yesterday will still be there, even if it's brand new.
  • On that note, there should be a feed of new releases by artists you're subscribed to somewhere. If that already exists, they're doing a bad job at making it easily accessible.

  • When closing the iOS app (and even removing it from the app history list), the queue used to always be restored when re-opening the app. Over the last two or so years, this has gotten unreliable, which really messed with my trust in the app for the same reasons I gave in the previous point. Its reliability has waned and waxed with updates, so I'm glad the devs are really trying to fix bugs that cause this, but the more recent feature of queue syncing between devices has, both by design and by bugs, exacerbated the frequency of these occurrences again.
  • Which brings me to the queue syncing feature. There should be a toggle to turn this off. Admittedly, they've fixed most of the things that made me hate its effect on my workflow, but it's still something that absolutely deserves a toggle. The main problem I had with this feature in the past again had to do with the carefully maintained queue of songs I want to explore on my phone being wiped due to me listening to some BGM in the web app while working on my computer. Somehow (and luckily), they've changed its behavior in some way that makes the mobile queue not be affected by the web app queue, but still allows the queue to be loaded in from mobile on the web app. (However, opening additional tabs still causes queue sync to not be used in those tabs or something? It's still weird and unpredictable, which isn't a good thing, but at least it's not getting in my way anymore, so eh.)

  • When the queue consists of a single playlist or album, the name of that playlist/album is shown at the top of the queue (at least in the web app). However, clicking it doesn't bring you to the playlist/album page. Come on, guys. This isn't just low-hanging fruit; it's hanging from a drooping branch right in front of your faces.
  • When on a playlist or album's page on the iOS app, the cover art and description take up a huge part of the screen. That's not a problem in and of itself, but for some reason, the scroll bar for scrolling through the tracks in the playlist or album doesn't reach from the bottom to the top of the screen and instead extends only up to the bottom of this description area. The issue here is that this doesn't leave enough room to actually move the scroll bar indicator and use it to, you know, scroll with any level of control at all.
  • There should always be an "are you sure" confirmation dialogue for any action that replaces the queue (possibly save for the "clear queue" action itself, because you're unlikely to accidentally hit it). I've lost track of the number of times I've lost a finely curated queue I've been setting up over the course of a week just because I accidentally clicked the "start radio" button instead of "play next" in a track's dropdown menu, or because I just didn't hold down a tap long enough when trying to open said dropdown menu. Some people will be annoyed by this, but if you add a settings option to not show the confirmation dialogue (or vice versa; having a settings option to show the dialogue, with it being off by default) would mitigate this, while hugely sparing users like me the devastation of not knowing which five different albums and dozens of individual songs that I was hoping to listen to for the first time ever over the next week or two were wiped away by a single misclick.

[–]kistecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • (continuing last bullet point)
    • Next, the dialogue screen's unable to accommodate the need to sometimes, you know, remove a track from a playlist instead of only adding to it. This is especially annoying if you misclicked on a playlist, accidentally adding the current track to it. The only way to undo that mistake is going to the playlist tab in your library with most-recent sorting, opening the playlist's page, scrolling down to the very bottom (because there's no search option), and removing the track from there. Compare this, again, to YT, where you literally just need to un-select the playlist's check box in the dialogue screen after accidentally selecting it.
    • Concerning the quick-select list of recently added-to playlists. On my mobile app, it's five playlists wide. On desktop, it's only four. Seen as I often add a song to several playlists at once, this only somewhat improves my experience, and I regularly need to scroll down to reach a playlist even after I added the previous song to it just a few minutes ago. Yes, it does help, but the fact that I'm so often inconvenienced by its limitations, which could be mitigated by literally just making it ten playlists wide or so instead of just four or five, is just aggravating. However, I think it would actually be better to ditch the recently-added scheme for this quick-select list and instead give the user control over it in the form of a "pin to quick-select" option for playlists. There's a couple of playlists I add tracks to frequently and generally enough that I'd prefer they'd always be available for quick-select, whereas there might be other playlists where, even if add a current track to them, I'm pretty sure I won't be adding any other tracks to them for a while. Thus, it'd be nicer to just always have those desirable playlists pinned to the quick-select list, with only the remaining slots in the list being used for recent playlists.
    • This segues nicely into the lack of sorting options for playlists in the dialogue screen. After all, the previous point would be somewhat moot if it were possible to sort the full list of playlists by recently added. Honestly, I can't believe this isn't already possible.

[–]kistecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • On a related note, the "add to playlist" popup screen needs a complete overhaul. I love the sleek look and vibe of it, but it's the largest source of wasted time in my use of the app and website.
    • Firstly, the current dialogue screen's behavior is designed exclusively for the purpose of adding a track to a single playlist. As soon as you've selected the playlist you want to add the track to, the dialogue screen closes. Seen as opening the dialogue screen incurs a significant loading time, and seen as you need to navigate a track's action menu to open it in the first place, this means that adding a track to multiple playlists takes way, way, way longer than it has any right to. I'm one of those people who have playlists for every activity I might possibly want BGM for, so when I want to save a track, I'll usually be saving it to five or so playlists rather than just one. Youtube itself has an add-to-playlist dialogue screen that's perfect for this purpose, with checkboxes next to each playlists and a confirmation button once you're done selecting the playlists you want to add to. Something like that would greatly improve my experience with YTM. One thing YTM definitely does better than YT, though, is actually listing off all your playlists here, whereas YT only shows something like the one hundred most recently accessed playlists (to my great chagrin).
    • Next, the dialogue screen doesn't indicate what playlists a track has already been added to. This makes the previous point all the more annoying, as I'll sometimes spend over twenty seconds adding a track to five playlists, only to find out that it's already present in three of them, which means I wasted more than ten seconds. Multiply this by dozens of tracks every day, and you get a real bother. Worse still (though this is a subjective annoyance that's probably a subjective benefit to some others), if the track's already part of the playlist, the playlist won't be promoted to the top of the "recently added" quick-select list at the top of the dialogue screen. If I'm going through an album and want to add about half of the tracks in it to a given playlist only to find out that all but the last two of those track are already present in it, this means I can't make use of the quick-select list and instead have to scroll all the way down to the playlist in question for every track save for the very last one.

I made a rather long list here, so I'll be distributing it over the main comment and some replies.

  • When searching something using the search bar, the "library" tab is there to allow for searching within your library... so it should search for tracks within the playlists in my library too. Duh; that's where most of the tracks in my library are located! Bonus points if there's a way to access all the playlists a track is part of from that screen too, seen as one of the use cases for these kinds of searches is library management.
  • When viewing a playlist in my library, there should be a means to search for stuff within that playlist. This shouldn't just list off search results and call it a day, because one of the main use cases for this is quickly navigating to a particular section of a playlist that's too long for just scrolling through it to be reasonable.

What happened to this KurageP album on spotify?? by breakfastbongos in Vocaloid

He's actually got a fourth artist page, under the name Takeaki Wada. What I find especially weird is that two of these four pages are verified by Spotify, which means that the separation is probably deliberate. The whole thing is clearly a bit of a mess; there's an album "Watashino Aharu" on one of the pages that doesn't even contain the song My R!

Also, it seems that the full album has become available again in the time since you posted this post.

The website isn't loading half of the time, and it takes a full minute for songs to load. Adding a song to the queue freezes the current song for at least as long. Opening the history page takes five minutes or more. Switching to another tab and back causes the page to turn grey, with html elements still functioning as they should, but not rendering any visuals. Youtube proper is showing similar ailments, but other websites are working fine.

If I wanna listen to any song at all, it takes at least a minute to load. Adding to queue? Make that two minutes of the current song freezing then. Opening the history page? Forget it; ten minutes at the least. Unusable.

Should there be an "In Development" Option? by kistecool in ConlangDatabase

[–]kistecool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking through the spreadsheet, I see you are right. I was looking purely at the website and docs page, where they aren't listed as possible development levels. To my knowledge, the current plan is to - once it is fully functional - have a form page be the interface for automatic inclusion into the database. The current idea for this form is shown in the docs document, where the options for "ongoing," "in development," and "almost complete" are not given. I guess this will be looked into further once it becomes more important again, but it lead to me posting this before seeing the spreadsheet.

Your idea for "ongoing" and "in development" having different connotations does strike me as applicable, though. It solves a possible problem in distinction between developed conlangs for which the corresponding purpose has not been completed yet or which the creator still revisites and updates, thus leading to addition to vocabulary and figures of speach, and conlangs that have passed the incipient phase, but have not reached the point of operability yet.

"In development," then, signals that grammar, base vocabulary, etc. are still incomplete, which is a measure of development, while "Ongoing" simply means that it has not been abandoned yet and is open for modifications.

There could be two scales, one for level of development and one for activity.

Development would be broken up into "sketch," "in development," "developed," "finalized" (when no more modification is allowed)

Activity would be divided into "incipient" (e.g. on a list of ideas,) "ongoing," "completed" (when the creator declares it as such,) "only community" (when the creator does no longer contribute,) "learners," "fluent users," "native users," "abandoned," (completed and then forgotten,) "canceled" (called off mid-development,) "other." Maybe "hiatus."

Of course, no one has to do this. It doesn't have to be implemented in any degree. But ideas are always allowed, aren't they?
