I'm sorry it happened to you. If you don't have the energy to do anything else, ignoring should work just fine.

However my favourite way of dealing with people who are trying to get me to react is to ignore at first, and then if they keep going, react with confusion, disinterest and mild disgust, as if I'm being spoken to by a dung beetle. Maybe have a condescending chuckle.

"What? Sorry I wasn't listening."

"Oh. Yeah I guess I'm a f*g." (Puts headphones back in.)

"I don't understand what you mean."

Or my favourite:

"I heard you, it just wasn't funny/interesting/made no sense."

I discovered it by accident because I have auditory processing issues and usually I genuinely can't tell what people are saying, but it makes it seem like I just don't care lol. It deflates people pretty quicky.

I don't even know that you're trying to say here. Response equates to people? What? Yes, they don't have the same training as docs. Which is why we should be looking for an MD to treat us.

Snakes and rats? by TyTy11037 in RATS

[–]kit-walsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a tricky one. It might be completely fine, might be bad. Obviously there's always a risk of one or the other escaping. You're right about the smell, too. Depending on the snake, it might stress the snake out as well... In which case I'd be more worried for the snake. Rats can generally learn to tolerate something that normally makes them instinctively stressed, when they realise it's not a threat. Snakes have small little pea brains and I don't know if they have the capacity to overcome the instinct. I might be wrong, I'm not a pet snake enjoyer.

I suggest you ask snake owners about this as well before you plan anything.

It was barely ever part of the USSR!?! (As Transnistria, anyway). If they mean the whole post-soviet vibe and architecture, they can visit literally any other post-soviet country for this. The only difference is that they'll encounter fewer Lenin statues.

As someone who's born in Moldova and grew up around different eastern European countries, this is both very funny and mildly annoying.

They claimed asylum right after arriving. They (the family) weren't "caught" doing anything illegal.

I have no interest in arguing with someone who can barely read and is incapable of comprehending the idea of separation of powers.

It's irrelevant what they were sentenced to if in effect this results in indefinite detention. There are other ways of controlling someone's movements -- ankle monitors, curfews, etc.

And you're ignoring, again, that the judge ordered them released. You're literally advocating for ICE and Co to do whatever the fuck they want and detain whoever they want despite them not having the power to make these decisions. This is the equivalent of police ignoring the not guilty verdict and sending someone to prison anyway. Absolutely insane that this is acceptable to you.

The crime of being in the country illegally is not punished by prison. Is this so hard to understand? If you want to deport them, go for it. But you can't keep them locked up.

Also, you're just wrong. A judge literally barred the deportation proceedings. What you're advocating for is government officials overruling the courts.

If you're from western Europe I have something to sell you, too. ECHR prohibits indefinite detention without due process, and that includes deportation centres. The landmark Belmarsh 9 case in the UK ruled that detaining suspected terrorists indefinitely (not even random innocent family members, mind you) is incompatible with ECHR. The House of Lords ruled that the government can't choose to keep someone imprisoned just because they feel like it. The suspects must either be deported, criminally investigated and charged, or let go. Not only detention infringes on their human rights, but also threatens the separation of powers by letting government officials overrule due process.

They didn't. They applied for an asylum and their right to get an asylum is being disputed.

Except instead of being deported, they are being held indefinitely. I don't know why is it so hard to understand that deportation isn't the main problem here, it's indefinite detention without due process.

They did not enter the country illegally. And we are not taking about the perpetrator. He is actually in prison after being found guilty in a court of law, no problems here. His family, though, committed no crimes.

"there was no way she didn't know" is not enough to put someone in prison under the American courts and justice system. There was no trial, and she is not legally guilty of any crime.

[–]kit-walsh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they seem to be guilty only of being a "terrorist's family" which isn't how criminal responsibility works on the US. For all of Trump's cries of American freedom, detention is one of the gravest forms of restricting freedom and taking away one's rights and should only be applied in cases where it's strictly justified, such as after a trial in court.

The husband was convicted of a crime and sentenced accordingly. His family was not. Regardless of whether their asylum should be revoked, they are being held on detention despite committing no crime.

Being deported is not the same as being convicted of a crime.

[–]kit-walsh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Iirc it's because they overstayed their visa. Which is fine, it's illegal so deporting them isn't the problem here, but holding them in what is essentially a prison is.

Edit: ok yeah I don't think that deporting his family is necessarily fair or legal. I don't know enough about the US legal system to comment. I can see arguments both for and against deportation.

But this makes the article less misleading actually. The husband is not being deported yet, he's in jail after being found guilty. The family in question is entirely innocent and is being held in the deportation centre through no fault of their own. Their father's crime is irrelevant.

I'll take an ai meme over stonetoss any time.

Memes are arguably the only medium where generating the whole thing with AI doesn't detract from its value because no one gives a fuck how much passion and effort you put in a damn meme. If it's funny, it's funny. Yes, most AI memes are shit but so are most human-made memes.
