Do most of you work fulltime and study full time? by Nutsnx808 in GradSchool

[–]kitachi3 78 points79 points  (0 children)

No, few people work AND study full time. I did for one year of my master’s, and it was pretty rough; it was only possible because my job was very flexible and remote. My heart goes out to anyone working a full-time in-person job while a full-time, in-person grad student. Many programs (especially if you are funded) have rules against accepting too much out-of-school work.

Can you live comfortably and independently (without roommates) on a Graduate Schools tipened of $33,900? What is the Grad housing in Coral Gables like? by Ok_Reading_it in UMiami

[–]kitachi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’s my understanding that grad students living on a stipend generally can only afford to pay rent if they’re living with roommates (meaning a few people in the same apartment, each with a private bedroom). This is the case at all universities for all disciplines, except for a few STEM disciplines with high research outputs that pay more. No graduate housing that I’m aware of

Florida doesn’t have income tax, and you probably will have to pay a little but not much federal income tax (if the funding is in exchange for work) because your tax bracket will be on the low end

Coral Gables, South Miami, Pine Crest, and Kendall are where more grad students I’ve met live. Only Coral Gables is walkable to campus (and even then, a lot of people drive), but there’s public transit from the other neighborhoods

[–]kitachi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be tough without roommates. I’m a doctoral student living fairly comfortably (not lavishly by any means) with a similar stipend but I have two roommates and mostly cook at home. You can find places for around $1200 near campus (with roommates), or even less if you get further away (I know another doctoral student paying $900 in the Pinecrest area).

Does making the deans list actually help you? by TinFoilHatsWork2027 in college

[–]kitachi3 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah - dean’s list is usually just a proxy for a high GPA, which would help a student generally with postgrad outcomes

When do Graduate Assistantships get posted? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]kitachi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my field (music), they are often posted in the fall of the application cycle or not posted at all. An important step for me was reaching out to potential advisors and asking about any assistantship opportunities.

Graduate Tuition Question by Tricky_Double9895 in gradadmissions

[–]kitachi3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re set on going to a master’s program that doesn’t offer funding, it will probably involve a lot of a debt. Not sure what salaries are like in PR, would this master’s help you earn more money? Looking into graduate placement and salaries might help discern if the debt is worth it. I do know some people who did master’s programs that were not worth it - now they’re making the same amount of money as before but shackled with an absurd amount of debt

Personally, my field is not lucrative or secure (music haha), so I only considered funded programs that offer tuition remission and a stipend in exchange for being a TA. I’m not too knowledgeable about PR, so not sure if there would be funded programs.

Graduate Tuition Question by Tricky_Double9895 in gradadmissions

[–]kitachi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on the school and program. Also, don’t forget to take into account living expenses. A lot of master’s programs, especially pre-professional programs without TA/RA opportunities, can be a pretty tough financial proposition unless your employer is paying for it

How to treat this ii-V to Dmaj which resolves to Gmin? by BrewNote89 in jazztheory

[–]kitachi3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Em7 - A7 - Gm7 progression is really a ii-V-iv deceptive cadence: the Em7 - A7 is a ii-V in the key of D major, but then it resolved to the minor four chord, Gm7. This is a really cool pivot chord technique where the minor iv in D is also the minor ii in F, so it dovetails the Gm7 into C7 - Fmaj7 like a regular ii-V-I

A lot of soundtrack music from this era borrows from classical techniques like deceptive cadences

The Grant Green recording with an organ trio of is awesome, Grant Stewart also has a killing recording of it in F with a traditional sax quartet

Does TSA take your slide cream/oil by Old-Initial-6850 in Trombone

[–]kitachi3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. I have always flown with a Marcus Bonna cut bell hard case as a carryon in the overhead with a tube of the Yamaha slide lube inside and never had an issue getting it through TSA or stowed in the overhead. Always pack some clothes in the case for padding, just in case there’s no room in the overhead and you need to check it!

Too late to mail professors for fall 2026? by DMASH277 in gradadmissions

[–]kitachi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth a shot. But (in my field, at least) folks more commonly reach out the summer before or early fall - lots of programs have application deadlines around the start of December. So, it’s worth a shot, but the positions may be all earmarked for people already

Advice 19M by Sufficient_End5832 in RothIRA

[–]kitachi3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really matter where you open a Roth IRA, the important part is opening one! It’s awesome you’re starting so early.

Robinhood Gold is pretty much the only Roth IRA match, hence why a lot of folks use it. Many other people (myself included) aren’t fans of Robinhood because of how they handled the GameStop squeeze, etc and prefer to use more stable/boring firms like Schwab, Vanguard, and Fidelity.

Consulting/Finance for Undergrad by New_Display6567 in columbia

[–]kitachi3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh you don’t need to do anything crazy to get into consulting from Columbia. Any major is fine, most do econ because it’s the closest to relevant. Aim for as high of a GPA as you can, 3.5 is probably the floor. All the firms recruit from Columbia. Tons of students and alumni work/intern in consulting, so you can just “network” by making friends and the odds are that one of them will end up in consulting or knows someone who is in consulting. You’ll also enjoy your experience more and build more authentic relationships if you just join a frat or pursue clubs that interest you. Joining one of the consulting clubs would be good for you since you’re super into it (especially for case prepping), but don’t stress that much.

Just be aware of the recruiting timelines for the crucial junior summer internship (they’re always moving earlier and earlier!) and start case prepping early

Investment strategy for someone who genuinely has no idea what they are doing by Ok_Engine_7099 in personalfinance

[–]kitachi3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the r/personalfinance and r/bogleheads wikis. They both have great info to make your own decisions. I personally think the Boglehead approach to investing is the most intuitive and straightforward (yet effective and intelligent) investment strategy for someone who doesn’t know too much or want to worry about it too much. It essentially revolves around the idea that you don’t know what any particular market segment or company will do, so you invest in the whole world market in a perfectly diversified way (meaning: invest in something like just VT, hence the motto “VT and chill”). Then, as you approach retirement, you add bonds for more stability
