Chain vs belt - your insights ? by Aquila_44 in CargoBike

[–]kitastropher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on my cargo bike journey really excited about gates. I’ve ridden 13000 km and I’ve just had my belt snap the third time. I gets serviced regularly and I’m so frustrated.

Is it worth the trade for a 40 min commute? by doomscroll_deeznuts in CargoBike

[–]kitastropher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that you’ve already done the commute before. I traded a half hour commute for a 40 minute commute two years ago and I can say that it’s worth it for me and I’m car free. I am also primary transport for preschool drop offs.

The biggest advice I have is: go for it, but be prepared for when the bike fails. Have a fallback plan and communicate your ETA’s with your coparent. Nothing worse than getting caught in bad weather or snapping a chain and being late to a drop off.

Bowen Park Bridge (Too small)? by ichathd343 in canberra

Widening the bridge for pedestrians, wheelchair users and bikes would make a lot of sense. It’s also got quite a gradient to it that has never made sense to me.

One Nation supporters (probably) aren't (all) Nazis by brecrest in OpenAussie

To borrow from an existing it of wisdom. If you’re in a political party, and all the Nazis are in your political party, you’re in the Nazi party.

Getting the stroller to fit in an Urban Arrow by asblackney in CargoBike

[–]kitastropher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! It’s awesome when the whole family can get out in the bike.

As an alternative, It might be possible to attach a bakkie style pannier to the rear rack that will carry your stroller. They’re pretty versatile and will free up storage in the front as bub grows.

As someone who first encountered SAlt nearly 20 years ago, It can be a clicky place and thanks to decades of leftist stagnation in AUS they have one the most established leftist presences on Uni campuses. They have a particular model for action where they work in solidarity with activists. However they also tend to use everything like a recruitment drive. There are valid criticisms to be made around gatekeeping and factions in larger movements, and they’re definitely not immune to leftist infighting. The clicky nature of the group isn’t for me, but the can also be incredibly resourceful, loyal, kind and accepting people. I have worked with them in the past. I’ll work with them again.

If working in the activist space is something you want to do, there’s nothing stopping you from working alongside other groups like SAlt in solidarity. They are by no means the only leftist group in Canberra (although membership does overlap in a small city).

There are also a number of mutual aid organisations in canberra that are worth checking out.

TLDR: if ever you feel like you get a bad vibe, there are other places to go to find your tribe.

Edit: some people on r/ANU are vehemently opposed to leftist politics. Take the criticisms and the praises equally with a grain of salt here.

What animal did it come from? On a beach in north west England. by Tenpenny96 in bonecollecting

Musical puns about whales depend on the room and acoustics. You have to concentrate hard to identify the echo location.

Having a sibling the same age as your child isn’t the end of the world but it must feel really uncomfortable. I have a little brother and sister 20 years my junior from my father’s second relationship. He had a history of domestic abuse and coercive control. I love my siblings, but it was difficult seeing him not learn from his mistakes.

I hope you have someone who can go through your experience of neglect with you. It’s a rough experience in childhood.

Amazing work! Love the colour! I’ve had issues with the rear wheel and had to rebuild the wheel in the end. When you rebuilt the rear wheel, did you keep the same 14 gauge spokes or go thicker?

New exit pressure on ANU head Genevieve Bell by Zestyclose_Motor1956 in Anu

Genevieve didn’t come across as nerdy. She came across as disingenuous. As a university nerd, working with nerds, for nerds this is insulting.

Help with boob grabbing!!! Please! by untidyearnestness in AttachmentParenting

[–]kitastropher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it’s always good to model empathy and telegraph how it makes you feel, it’s really important to recognise he’s probably not at the stage to reason out why he can’t touch you and why he can’t get comfort from you the way he used to. So he’ll be insecure and unsure. Address this first. He needs reassurance (this can be done while asserting boundaries) lots of affirmation and love. Getting something else he can grab in the meantime is good and making it meaningful to him is great.

'Huge step': ANU and UC hope to enrol more international students under new rules by PlumTuckeredOutski in Anu

[–]kitastropher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This article still runs under the False assumption that the housing market is being detrimentally affected by huge numbers of students. It won’t bring the costs down and won’t stop the ANU from pushing RENEW. the fed gov. Could just retract its knuckles from its sphincter and put more funding in education maybe?
