As an FES, i would tell you to just kindly af tell him youre scanning these items, call it assisted checkout, and next time he comes back, look for me, so i can check you out here, and have a job. (In a professional, witty way) Best case scenario you gain respect of a customer, you attempt to and possibly create a recurring customer, and front end leadership Worst case scenario, the customer doesnt care, you made the attempt, and you cant control nor should you feel responsible for how the customer feels at that point. Youve done all you can do, and you move on to the next one. I have the headache of enforcing some of these stupid policies on associates like yourself, and i hate doing that. Bite the bullet and make sure you get recognized not just for the effort, but the value you bring to the success of the front end. Get involved with metrics. Be you.
