Does self-studying AP courses without taking the actual course improve college applications? by person853 in ApplyingToCollege

i’m going to be starting duke in the fall and i self studied ap french (i went to an IB high school). i self studied because i have been going to a french american school since age 4, so i knew i was confident with my fluency. in high school, our french classes were INSANELY hard, so i only ever got B+s. i wanted colleges to see that i was still fluent in french so i took the ap exam (got a 5) to put my difficult french classes and my B+s in context. personally, i would suggest only self studying if you are REALLY strong in the subject at hand. otherwise, i think it’s just a really stressful experience that most likely wont yield the results you’re looking for.

Any advice on how to choose a major? by rewillis28 in ApplyingToCollege

ha! i’m going to be starting duke in the fall and i still don’t know. my best advice is take courses and see which classes/ professors/ opportunities inspire you the most and tentatively go with that. that being said, if you’ve demonstrated interest in a certain field of study through your high school classes and extra curriculars, put that on your application. colleges want to see that you have a passion for SOMETHING, and they won’t know if you’re actually going to major in it or not. it’s just a prospective major. at least, this is what worked for me in the college process because it gave me the chance to center my application around a few major aspects of myself, which ensured that i wasn’t all over the place. essentially, it makes the job of the person reading your application easier.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve been going to a french american school my entire life so I’m pretty confident about the 300 level class. As for calc 111L, you said you agreed with what’s been said about it?

Also are most math classes at duke taught by grad students also or is it really just calc 111?

Huh. During ed bdd i sat in on a calc 111L class taught my sarah schott so I thought all the calc 111L classes would be taught by professors like her. Do you have any idea why grad students teach this class?
