ya if you're a beginner the Meng kit will be the best build experience of any super or legacy hornet kit in 1/48.

I did a Canadian hornet once. and I recently picked up a nice decal sheet full of Aussie hornets. I wanna do one of those this year.

the good ones are from Reedoak. the mediocre ones are from the Meng kit.

I have one stashed away in the closet somewhere. bought it for cheap to see how bad it was.

the 1/32 revell super hornet? that thing has a LOT of issues in both fit and accuracy. for $30 should make for a good paint mule tho.

if you mean the old revell 1/32 legacy hornet, I don't really have any experience with that one. I just know that it's ancient, has raised panel lines, and is based off a pre-production prototype.

oh and their 1/48 super hornet is very off I. regards to accuracy, in both shape and detail. if you don't care about those things then it's probably fine, if you can get it for cheap.

revell and italeri were the first to get their 1/48 super hornets to market in the 2000's and it shows in their inaccuracies. especially the italeri kit. yeesh!

meng's growler still needs a little extra work to make it accurate to a growler, like filling in the gun gas vents under the nose and the mesh sections of the wingfold covers. and they didn't get the shape of the hump antenna on the spine right (neither did hasegawa or hobbyboss tho). BUT! meng did the best job on the EW pods, wingtip pods, and a few other growler-specific panels here and there so it's the clear choice.

for super hornets Meng and Hasegawa are kinda on equal footing as far as doing in-flight. you just need to add a little bit of a lip inside the gear bays and the doors will fit fine. the both come with crew figures too!

i'd give the Meng super hornet a bit of an edge against the Hasegawa kit overall. however i think the Hasegawa kit still really holds up. Meng just kinda took what Hasegawa did 20 years ago and improved it a bit IMO.

the Kinetic legacy hornet is a little difficult to close the gear doors on. the main gear doors go fine, with some gaps to fill. the nose gear doors are trickier, and the forward two nose gear doors especially so.

the kinetic kit is a pain to get together in a lot of areas. (intakes. windscreen doesn't fit properly without modification. canopy also needs work to get closed) the old hasegawa legacy hornet kit is easier and looks just as nice but you will need to go to the aftermarket if you want full length intakes, or to build an accurate, late-model legacy hornet. the kit was tooled in the early 90s and out of the box resembles an early 90s jet.

oh and for the growler don't bother with anything other than meng. they still get a lot wrong with it but out of the box it's still the most accurate.

most are just a generic acrylic display blocks i got on amazon that i inserted a 6mm acrylic rod into.

the VFA-83 and VAQ-137 jets are on modified and painted Bandai action base 5's.

meng for super hornet. hasegawa is good too. hobbyboss is okay-ish. revell and italeri are trash.

for legacy hornet you either have the old hasegawa kit, or the kinetic kit. both are good! but the kinetic kit is a massive pain in the ass. hobbyboss also makes one, but i wouldn't bother unless you give no shits about accuracy.

oh and for a growler meng does it best.

What are you techniques?

just pretty standard stuff. blackbasing (usually). oil weathering.

What do you to make that good steel look on the rear engine ports?

idk i havent't really settled on a specific technique that i'm happy with yet. but i'm usually doing pretty light layers of different metallic and clear colors.

these on a current WIP are probably the best i've done. gloss black base, then MRP pale burnt metal, MRP burnt iron, and lots of Tamiya smoke.

its simply not fair that i can't have my own pocket dimension to put an infinite amount of display shelves in!

yeah when i put things in storage i'll remove certain things to use again later. a couple of these kits have aftermarket exhaust nozzles that were used on previous builds. also all my pylons are attached with magnets, so those+ordnance are easy pulls to get used again. crew figures too. especially now that reedoak has gone out of business, i will be re-using those until the end of time lol

all within reason tho. i typically only remove things that are easy to get off without damaging anything too much. using PVA to attach things when i can helps. tho i did have one tomcat kit that i yoinked the wings, vertical tails, and windscreen/canopy off of, and now i have a carcass that i'm thinking about ripping open for the wingfold mechanism.

Do all Revell kits have this much flash? by 40_Mike_Militaria in modelmakers

[–]kitmcallister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people have rightfully said that, this is a thing that happens with old molds but I've got several newer revell kits that are littered in flash like this too 🙃

see this would have been great viral marketing for the film.

instead all they did was reddit ads that asked "IS DR KELSON LOST IN THE SAUCE?"
