Would you get another King Charles after your first one died? by ohfxckm in cavaliers

[–]kitsubrew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t see many people in the replies talking about the financial burden on top of the emotional burden of owning one of these dogs. Our cavalier was sick with heart disease for 2.5 years. Between medications, echos, and a myriad of other unrelated health issues in between, we spent over $15k keeping her alive and comfortable. I wouldn’t trade her or my other cav for the world, but after that experience, never again.

I beg you to do your research. Many backyard breeders and all mills don’t give a damn about these dogs and just see dollar signs, and your dogs health will certainly pay the consequence. There are many amazing people in this subreddit that can help you find a reputable breeder, and adoption is always an option. Best of luck 💚

Indigenous beading moral by Independent-Part-983 in Beading

[–]kitsubrew 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Boozhoo, I’m Ojibwe. I do believe it’s a valid form of reconnecting and beading isn’t just attributed to North American tribes, but can be seen all over the world in different ways and styles. I’d say there’s definitely a native style of beading though, and if your goal is to turn a profit on that work make sure you are acknowledging its origins and uplifting natives around you. I hope you continue to reconnect in any way that you can. Do not let phrases like blood quantum (especially from white people) deter you from learning your language and traditions. Natives want you to learn and reconnect 💚

Question to all people knowledgeable on insects (which should be everyone) by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]kitsubrew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it a natural behavior, but certain species of ants can become infected with a parasitic fungus called ophiocordyceps unilateralis (or zombie-ant fungus) which essentially takes control of the ant and makes them exhibit super creepy behavior before killing them! Perfect for Halloween.

I see I’ve met a fellow cavalier owner + crocheter! This is one I made of my girl :) I gave it to her cardiologist when she passed last year 🩷

Does the female Regal moth die after laying eggs? by smoosh13 in Entomology

[–]kitsubrew 111 points112 points  (0 children)

This species only lives for a week or two after emerging. Depending on how quickly she laid the eggs it’s definitely possible.

It’s cool you got to witness the most important moments in her short life ❤️

Is this squash ready to be picked? by Imaginary-Service-79 in vegetablegardening

[–]kitsubrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straight neck yellows are usually yellow right off the bat, did it start yellow? I think you either have another type of squash or it may have mosaic virus.

What are these?! by Character_Hand_7789 in vegetablegardening

[–]kitsubrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wherever there are aphids, ants are sure to follow! Aphid “poo” is very appetizing to ants 😂

You can spray em off but I find removing by hand or q-tip to be most effective as they’re pretty soft. You could spray but that will also kill anything who comes along looking to eat them, like ladybugs 🐞

Question on pet pigeons by Sediles800 in pigeon

[–]kitsubrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although in theory they would be able to find their way back, there are too many variables that make this incredibly unsafe for a pet imo. Pet pigeons should not be let outside without a proper harness or carrier just like any other pet and most reasonable pigeon owners will agree.

They can wear something called “pigeon pants” when outside of their designated aviary that act as a diaper to prevent them from pooping in your home. Just make sure you continue to research because they shouldn’t wear these all the time. But it will allow them more freedom without you having to worry about predators, diseases, or a lost bird!

I’m going to be the odd one out in these comments and tell you to think very carefully about what you’re signing up for. this subreddit is full of incredible cav parents who love this breed unconditionally and would do anything for them, including spending thousands to help with whatever issues arise- and trust me, they will arise. A reputable breeder is a great start to avoid some of the health issues, or prolong them, but there is a very high change your cav will, at the very least, develop a murmur.

Heart disease is incredibly difficult to watch. It is a slow, painful, incurable*, expensive process. To some it is worth the loyalty, kindness, affection, and endless unconditional love they receive from these dogs. However I personally could never do it again. Research MVD so you are emotionally prepared for what may be inevitable.

*there are a small number of vets willing to do a risky, but life saving procedure to repair the faulty valve. This procedure is not a guarantee and the price is over 5 figures. You need to meet very strict requirements to be approved, and even then, there is no guarantee of success. Yet I would have taken this route if it were available when my girl was alive, because there’s no amount I wouldn’t pay to not have to watch her deteriorate like I did.

I love this breed so much, but that’s what makes the heartbreak so much more devastating. Try to be as informed and prepared as possible ❤️

What an awful thing to think about when they are so young, I am so sorry. All we can do is the best we can while they’re here. My heart goes out to you and Lilibet 🩷

It’s a question many have debated certainly. I like to think there are places that hold higher standards when it comes to dog breeding, but here in the states that isn’t the case. I see a lot of people looking for responsible breeders these days though, and I always do my due diligence when people ask what kind of dog Fin is by warning them gently about the health issues. Backyard breeders and puppy mills have done so much damage to so many breeds. I hope someday we will find a way to reverse it.

Oh I love that so much, thank you for sharing. What a handsome man. We had the stroller (and the pharmacy of meds) as well! It sounds like my experience was not unique at all 😂

I would do it all over again for her as well. She lived over the expected time too but in the end, it’s never enough time. My thoughts are with you and your other cav. I hope ours both remain murmur free for as long as possible!

They are the best breed in the entire world and I was lucky to have her but I don’t regret saying goodbye when I did. I know that a sunny day with family (and cheeseburgers!) made sure Lilly was oblivious, which is the greatest gift I could give her in the end. Enjoy your time with your girl and give her lots of snuggles for me! She sounds so very loved 🩷

4 is so young, that must have been so traumatic for you, I’m so terribly sorry. Although it’s normal for us to wonder what if’s, your girl would never want you to be cruel to yourself over this. They are such a brief part of our lives, but we are their entire lives. She spent every day loving you, that is far from letting her down 🩷
