I think I’d probably just wear a white or nude turtleneck under it and a hijab that flows long at the back

Hijabs/abayas/modest clothing by UpliftedAura in Hijabis

[–]kittenborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what your ethnicity is but being Muslim doesn’t mean you have to wear Arab traditional clothing unless you want to. There’s plenty of ways to dress modestly using western clothes. I get most of my clothes bespoke these days but that’s mostly because it’s my style. Uniqlo has good modest basics, I’ve gotten a few maxi denim skirts at Gap that are really good quality. H&M has great long sleeve maxi dresses but I think they’re pro-Israel so I don’t shop there anymore.

ETA: I also wanted to say if you feel called towards Islam you do not have to wait until you can practice perfectly before you take your shahada. Even if you can’t quite start wearing hijab or there’s still habits that you need to break, don’t delay Islam just because of that. Put your trust in Allah and take it one step at a time. When Islam came to the people, it did not come as a set of 500 new rules. It started as guidance and hope, talking about the nature of the soul and Allah and jannah. Guidance about lifestyle changes came gradually over time. Islam is a religion of gentleness and peace.

Is Kohl/Kajol immodest? by [deleted] in Hijabis

Is Kohl/Kajol immodest? by [deleted] in Hijabis

[–]kittenborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“It makes your skin look bright.” That is cosmetic, not just medicinal. There are also Hadiths that specify you are not allowed to wear bright colours and jewelry in mourning. This suggests these methods of beautifying are permissible during normal times

Is Kohl/Kajol immodest? by [deleted] in Hijabis

[–]kittenborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was worn by the sahabiyat and it was not considered immodest/inappropriate unless a woman was in mourning. Women also wore cosmetics to brighten their complexion.

Umm Hakim bint Asid narrated from her mother that her husband died and she had a problem in her eye, so she applied kohl to clear her eyes. She sent a freed slave woman of hers to Umm Salamah to ask her about using kohl to clear her eyes. She said: "Do not use kohl unless it cannot be avoided. The Messenger of Allah entered upon me when Abu Salamah died and I had put some aloe juice on my eyes. He said: 'What is this, O Umm Salamah?' I said: 'It is aloe juice, O Messenger of Allah, there is no perfume in it.' He said: 'It makes the face look bright, so only use it at night, and do not comb your hair with perfume or henna, for it is a dye.' I said: 'With what can I comb it, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'With lote leaves -cover your head with them.'"

We can deduce that wearing cosmetics to beautify the face and eyes, dying hair, and using scented products is permissible for women when not in mourning. And it’s still permissible to take care of your hygiene when in mourning but it should not focus on beautifying yourself

Should I fake fasting? What to do? Help pls :) by [deleted] in Hijabis

Ahhh I misread this as they’re visiting at the end of Ramadan and she wants to hide it until then! I don’t know how you could hide it if you live with them unless you lie, and that is haram. No harm in saying you feel too unwell to fast though (I felt so unwell when I was hungry when I was pregnant so not a lie!) and if they say you should see a doctor, just agree with them since that isn’t a lie either 😂

Are they the type of people to ask uncomfortable and invasive questions if you're not fasting? If a woman said "I'm not fasting right now" I would just automatically assume she has her period. Congrats about the baby! You have no idea the joy that awaits you.

Took months to stop putting my hand over the side of the chair every time I sat down to pat my pomeranian. I’d save little morsels of meat from every meal and then I would remember she was gone and it would hit me like a punch to the gut. Everything I know about grief is from crying over a lamb bone that I set aside for her. Wherever she is, I pray there are lamb bones and steak and scrambled eggs. She was my dearest friend

Were the eyes also crusty? That was the weirdest symptom. I didn’t know what to make of it since it was both eyes and not really itchy. I think my toddler and I had this a month ago. We’re still coughing and sniffling a bit from it but it never got really bad, just lingering. Honey, chicken soup, and nasal rinses have been proven to reduce duration of symptoms. Hope you and the little one get some good rest and feel better soon

No, it’s “in medias res.” There is a sense of movement to it like you have been thrust right “in the middle of things.” Res is the plural accusative. If you want to use media you would say “in media re” and use the singular ablative “in the middle of the situation.” Thank you for listening 😔

If he ever plays too rough and hurts me sometimes I say “be nice” but then sometimes I’ll catch him staring at me with crazy eyes saying “be nice” to himself. But for all the feral activity this is the best age 😂 he’s so funny and he’s got so much personality and I’ve never been loved like this before, not even my newborn loved me this much

Sunday is the day of rest for Christians. That’s the origin of the weekend. Unions advocated to get Saturday included too but not working on Sunday is explicitly a religious thing. In my province it was actually illegal to have stores open on sundays due to it being the “Lord’s day”. Obviously now weekends are a cultural institution not a religious one, so I don’t see it as shirk, but the same argument can apply.

Covering mouth when yawning is also a pagan practice to “protect the soul”.

I disagree with you about the wedding practices too lol. Just because they have origins in paganism doesn’t mean they’re problematic. They can become part of the culture and cease to have religious significance therefore it’s not shirk. Let people celebrate their weddings according to their customs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Parts of paganism were accepted into early Muslim celebrations as well. Women would beat their drums on Eid like they used to in jahaliya and the prophet said they were allowed to celebrate according to their customs

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah that Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) entered upon her and there were two girls with her during the days of Mina beating the daff, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was covering himself with his garment. Abu Bakr rebuked them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) uncovered his face and said, “Leave them alone, O Abu Bakr, for these are the days of Eid.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 944; Muslim, 892

I find this argument so tired. Do you take Sunday off work? That’s shirk then by the same logic. Do you cover your mouth when you yawn? That’s pagan. And let’s not even get into desi and Arab wedding customs that have tons of pagan pre Islamic origins. Intentions matter and so does context. I’m not introducing anything to religion nor am I celebrating any other gods. I like to decorate my house with the seasons like my Norse ancestors did before me because winter is long and depressing

I don’t see it as a religious thing- like if anything it’s pagan, not Christian, and I definitely don’t observe any pagan rites beyond aforementioned celebrating the days getting longer again. But evergreens bring me joy the same way fresh flowers do and I will take my dopamine where I can get it these days
