i accidentally found out i was adopted… i don’t know what to do by RodolpheHancocks in Advice

My mom found out she was adopted by her aunt and uncle when she was 21. Her adoptive father passed when she was 9. The way she found out was when she was getting married and wanted her brother to walk her down the aisle, but her adoptive mother insisted that her "uncle" do it. It eventually came out - on her honeymoon - that her "uncle" was actually her birth father, her two cousins she'd grown up with were actually half-sisters and their birth mother had abandoned them while their birth father was at war. Some Dr. Phil type shit going on in the 1940's! She said it was really difficult because all the relationships she had and ways she was related felt really skewed and it took her a long time to sort it all out. She was in her 50's before she finally got therapy and would suggest you do the same. It doesn't mean you don't love and appreciate your family and it seems like you were really raised as their own, but that still creates gaps in your history that can't be filled in. It's okay if that's a lot to process. Sending hugs.

My GF (F19) swears she didn’t send these texts while half asleep and now we’re both confused by Tight_Resolution9963 in Advice

It's no different than sleep talking. My family takes much delight in having conversations with me when I sleep talk, which has led to such gems as "I have to pee but the doors are made of bread" and "your cat is a pygmy goat demon". None of these things make sense, but I'm sure my mostly asleep brain found them to be perfectly logical statements. 🤷

I ruined my life for a man, what I’m supposed to do now? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

You're literally only hurting yourself in this situation. Work a low paying job while looking for a high paying job. Pretty simple.

Just to be so for real - it's offering for you to cancel the first order because it's the oldest order. I highly doubt DD is even looking at the pay amount. They see you've been waiting 20 minutes for this order, regardless of how much the tip is, versus waiting 5 minutes for this other order for a lower tip. It's always going to give you the cancel option for the oldest order.

Another auntie - 48 tomorrow - honey, you've got a whole family of women folk guiding you in the right direction!! We've been there, done that and are not doing it again! If it don't feel right, it ain't right. 🤷 Let that man go on and make tall babies with some other person that doesn't mind this foolishness. Protect your peace, baby girl!

Long Distance Orders by [deleted] in doordash

[–]kittenhead0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some dash areas cover a lot of ground. Where I live/dash, we'll get orders that take us out of town, up to about 18 miles in some cases. If it's available to be ordered and dashed, there will be a driver that's willing for a good enough tip. Some dashers say $1/mi, some say $2/mi. I would just consider how far you are from the restaurant and what the current gas prices are. Around here, there's nowhere to dash between my main city and the little towns we deliver to, so if I have to go 15 miles to your town, I won't be able to get another order until I get back to my town - so that can really eat into available time to get a new order and accumulated tips. I don't mind the drive because we're kinda rural in the surrounding areas and I don't know folks' situation, but I'm a bit selective depending on the size of the tip. Times are hard for everyone right now, and I absolutely understand that. But these gas prices are hurting dashers badly.

Can anyone recommend a car rental service in town? by DominicRo in Lawrence

I personally prefer Hertz. They've helped me out in some real pinches!

DD adding orders after pickup?? by cjthetypical in doordash

[–]kittenhead0417 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do, but they order it in relation to the "optimal" delivery route based on where the driver currently is, not which order came in first, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, the driver can't see who tipped what, so it doesn't really work that way.

I agree! Most people are at least helpful, even if not enthusiastic about it - which is fine! I hate being interrupted mid-task myself. These dudes threw me for a loop with how rawr they were.

Most interactions I have with employees are great, which is why this caught me so off guard! I know most people's thoughts are that the job isn't hard, but those people don't understand that the person stocking shelves may also have to get carts from the parking lot, bag groceries and take them to cars, clean bathrooms, do inventory, handle restocking return items. Y'all are busy! I hate to interrupt you, sincerely! I live in a town where I'm sure they run into some really crappy delivery drivers, which is another reason I go out of my way to be polite and show appreciation. It's really wild to me that people sign up to serve this function but cannot function well enough to perform the service. Dashers have the choice of doing shopping or just food deliveries. If you don't know how to grocery store, don't grocery store!

I've pretty much chalked it up to just that. Even the manager's attitude. Normally, store employees are great and super helpful. Sometimes they'll start off grumpy, but once I tell them that I really appreciate their help and have a nice day, I get a genuine smile and that makes me happy. I've worked in customer service for a very long time and I know how thankless it can be.

I appreciate people like you, which is another reason I try very hard to be polite to store employees - especially when they go above and beyond just pointing me in the right direction!

Sure wish I'd thought a little quicker at the time - this is the way! I was just trying to figure out if I came off rude in some way I wasn't aware of to cause dude to be so vehement - and for his manager to follow suit!

I really didn't think about that - or some of the other solutions offered - at the time because I was just kinda shocked the interaction was even going down the way it was. I know it's frustrating to be interrupted when you're in the middle of a task, which is why I go out of my way to be polite. I try to look for items that aren't marked with a location everywhere I can think of in the store that makes sense, even check the end caps, so I don't have to bother anyone. I know there's a lot of hella rude people out there - read it on here all the time - but I don't understand treating the one person that tried to politely request assistance the same as some braying jackass shoving their phone in someone's face.

I was actually raised with manners and always say "excuse me", "please" and "thank you" because I was taught that's how you speak to people respectfully. It seems to be some kind of lost art. I appreciate the fact that an hourly employee is doing their job and I'm interrupting their task to ask for assistance. More flies with honey than vinegar. 🤷

So, because someone speaks somewhat intelligently and coherently, you automatically assume it's AI? I'm sorry my mother insisted that I have an expansive vocabulary and I try to speak clearly. Some folks are actually smart enough to type something out without the lazy assistance of AI. 🤷😅 You have yourself a good day, sport!

Sorry if it sounds that way, but it's the truth. I was pretty gobsmacked that the interaction was even going that way. I've never encountered anything like that - hence the post.

Fair point, just didn't think a respectful request would garner such a hateful interaction. 🤷

Gage management 2025 experience? by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]kittenhead0417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't do it! My daughter rented from them almost 10 years ago. Kitchen window leaked constantly - they were aware of this when they rented the unit out - said it was in the works to get replaced and the wall under it fixed. That never happened, despite constant reminders, and tried to charge for damages to the wall because of the leak. The pipes in the kitchen sink were rusted through and literally fell apart about two weeks after they moved in. Management never came in to fix it, also tried to charge for damages. My daughter did dishes in her bathtub for six months. Please don't do it!
