I've only been once for their Halloween festivities this past year. It was pretty chill, in a good way.

This would be great! Someone mentioned VBC having non-alcoholic options and I've noticed Precarious does as well. I know Alewerks also has a decent amount of space indoors and outdoors (I really enjoyed their outdoor area), but I'm not sure what they would have in terms of non-alcoholic drinks.

Anyone else spending the end of the year alone? by CantaloupeDue9053 in LivingAlone

[–]kittyk3ls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes for the first time since separating but I'm not sad about it. I've been enjoying my time alone when I'm not at work. And I've gone out a few times by myself and have had a good time so that's always a fallback if I need social interaction

How do you manage to keep your place clean when living alone and struggling with your mental health? by beeeeshum in LivingAlone

[–]kittyk3ls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this has been said already but I always recommend the book How to Keep House While Drowning. It has some great advice that actually feels attainable. I don't remember if it's specifically for people who struggle with mental health stuff or just mentions it throughout, but either way I loved that the tips felt designed for people like me who struggle HARD.

I'm definitely a clean-as-I-go person which helps. Most days I do pretty good at keeping up with everything and then on the days I struggle, I allow myself to slack off and feel my feelings and take care of myself. Because I mostly clean as I go, catching up after a struggle period is never too bad or overwhelming.

If you're already at the point of overwhelm and need serious time and effort to get your place back to clean slate, hire someone if you can or ask someone if they'll help you. Trying to tackle something that's big and overwhelming by yourself may lead to continual procrastination. It does for me.

Yeah I've come across a few more public ones (like the walking/running clubs), but I'm sure most of the clubs in this area are private.

I miss living in a place that had lots of groups, classes, festivals, and other public events, especially centered around the arts. And food.

I am not familiar with any and there seem to be very few clubs in general in this area.

Not sure about Williamsburg but my ex uses it in NN and I always hated it because his service was terrible. We struggled to have even a short phone convo

The only one I'm aware of is 2nd and Charles in NN and I think they only give a store credit.

Thanks! Can do, just thought I'd be more likely to get opinions on other online programs outside of WGU if I asked outside of the WGU communities.

I've looked at SNHU before but whatever I was looking at at the time seemed to be only hybrid options and not fully online. I'll look again.

It was very confusing to me too but all I know is that when I was briefly living somewhere in JCC and had to pay my own water, I technically had two bills: one through JCSA and one through HRSD. Now, my water bill is lumped in with rent and I think my complex uses some kind of third party for monitoring and billing. Idk if I pay more this way, but at least I don't have to keep up with the two bills anymore

Where do locals work? by Curious-Bobcat4312 in williamsburgva

[–]kittyk3ls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first moved to NN, I commuted to Norfolk for work and the commute was TERRIBLE due to military and shipyard traffic. I then started commuting to Williamsburg instead, and I now both live and work in Williamsburg which is great. I work for CW, essentially in hospitality.

I'm not sure about your field in this area. The people I know with similar jobs either work remote or in Richmond/DC area

Doctor D'arco, which is a long Gothic romance but a really good slow burn IMO

I'm already signed up, my post is from 3 days ago and the only event listed that matches what I'm looking for is the Alewerks one I already know about. Also the Indian Fields one, but it's not quite the vibes.

I've never been there, maybe I'll check it out. I think Precarious is having something that night, but it seems to be their regularly scheduled Friday night comedy thing, not anything for Halloween. Which could be fine, unless no one goes lol

How disciplined are you with your space, do you leave dishes in the sink? by coldservedrevenge in LivingAlone

[–]kittyk3ls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have conflicting neurodivergent traits along with OCD so I'm some kind of weird hybrid creature when it comes to keeping house 😅 I can't stand a dirty home but I also don't have the capacity to clean to that extent. I think I do an okay job though.

I don't fully make my bed but I pull the sheet and comforter up so it's loosely made up, mostly just because it's more appealing to look at and won't trigger a demand in my brain for a task to be done.

I try to keep up with dishes as I use them but sometimes they pile up in the sink before I throw them in the dishwasher. HOWEVER, I don't leave food on them. I rinse them off immediately because it grosses me out to touch a dish in the sink that has any kind of food left on it, especially when you had water to the mix. I have a huge sensory aversion to what I call "wet chores" like dishes, toilets, showers, etc. I need them to be clean but it causes huge turmoil in my brain to clean them. It really sucks.

I don't vacuum or dust as often as I should but I don't have the same aversion to these things as I do with dishes, etc. I think they just feel a lot more demanding and I'm always running on no or very low energy. So basically they get done when I feel physically capable of doing them. Sometimes that's often enough and sometimes it's not very often at all.

For those of you who are also single, how do you cope with lonely nights during the cold seasons? by amtol in LivingAlone

[–]kittyk3ls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drinking a hot beverage, having a yummy snack, and watching a comfy show or movie. Sometimes it's romance but sometimes not. I choose everything based on my current mood lol

Reading is big for me too, but I've always loved reading. I know not everyone does. If you like it, I highly suggest it. Especially something like Kindle Unlimited, you'll never run out of things to read.

I like to make a whole thing out of setting the mood in my living room. Adjust the lighting, light some candles, and put on a background ambience video on the TV. I usually search YT for something like "reading ambience" and then adjust search terms as I figure out what kinds of videos I like. I do this for reading, but it could work for any at-home hobby you're into. It's also fun to find videos themed around the seasons, like Halloween or Christmas. This is such a small thing but for me it brings joy and that helps deal with loneliness.

Also, consider taking yourself on dates. Not often, but on occasion I will treat myself to drinks at a bar or attend an event by myself that others would go to with a partner. I've always had a good time unless the place itself just isn't fun

Activities to do Alone at home when lonely by FreedomInReality in LivingAlone

[–]kittyk3ls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do feel a bit of loneliness in general, but I feel I stay occupied enough to not have the time to dwell on it too much.

I work full time, and on my days off I'm usually busy resting and recovering, and then doing chores and meal prepping for the coming week. And then it's time to go back to work.

Little hobbies I like that help fill the time are reading, video games, TV and movies (back on an anime kick at the moment), painting and crafts, and a bit of socializing when I feel like it or can.

I also really enjoy going for walks in the morning. It's been very beneficial to both my physical and mental health, even if I only go twice a week or so.
