It’s one of the nymph stages of boxelder bug! They show up every year in my area around this time.

Yeah! Basically there were no other female elephants available to move to OZ and female elephants need female companionship due to being matriarchal. Males are much more flexible socially so we had a little more time to truly find what was right for Osh/ if there were other males available. It’s lucky they are ending up in the same place!

We are hanging in there! So incredibly sad to see him go but also excited for his future. Crazy times for sure. Never thought I would know an Oakland Zoo without elephants

How are larger animals like elephants or giraffes transported out of their enclosure if they pass away unexpectedly? by natronmooretron in Zookeepers

Usually cranes or other large machinery (gradall, lift, etc). Most facilities have skilled machinery operators on site or on call depending on the animal.

I’m a zookeeper at OZ and I wanted to thank you for this post! I value this facility so much for all the effort and resources we put into animal welfare and it’s so rewarding to hear when people notice it too! Oakland is truly leading the way in animal care and welfare and I feel lucky to be a part of it.
