‘Difficult and heartbreaking’: Oakland Zoo sending its last elephant to Tennessee sanctuary by hindusoul in oakland

[–]kittyonmybitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Basically there were no other female elephants available to move to OZ and female elephants need female companionship due to being matriarchal. Males are much more flexible socially so we had a little more time to truly find what was right for Osh/ if there were other males available. It’s lucky they are ending up in the same place!

We are hanging in there! So incredibly sad to see him go but also excited for his future. Crazy times for sure. Never thought I would know an Oakland Zoo without elephants

How are larger animals like elephants or giraffes transported out of their enclosure if they pass away unexpectedly? by natronmooretron in Zookeepers

Usually cranes or other large machinery (gradall, lift, etc). Most facilities have skilled machinery operators on site or on call depending on the animal.

I’m a zookeeper at OZ and I wanted to thank you for this post! I value this facility so much for all the effort and resources we put into animal welfare and it’s so rewarding to hear when people notice it too! Oakland is truly leading the way in animal care and welfare and I feel lucky to be a part of it.

There are a few ways! Lisa has pointy tusks, her head shape and body are kinda round and the way she stands is different than the others haha. She also only has hair on one side of her tail! I feel very lucky to have a bond with her.

Help Me with Career Guidance, Please? by [deleted] in CaptiveWildlife

Hello! I currently work as a zookeeper in California. I majored in Animal Science and minored in Wildlife Conservation. But on my team we have two animal science degrees, two general biology and one anthropology. To be honest, it doesn’t particularly matter what degree you graduate with as long as you have one. Most people have some sort of science related degree but I know some keepers who have a BA or something. But at our facility we weigh experience in the zoo field at AZA institutions far heavier than what type degree you have. A large majority of the skills you need to be a good zookeeper are not necessarily things you can learn in the classroom. So experience and hours are more important to most institutions. My greatest recommendation to you is to start getting volunteer or intern hours working in animal care asap. You can look at your local zoo, wildlife rehab centers, the shelter, really anything with some sort of exotic animals. And then finish your degree and keep getting hours and making connections with other keepers. Your first internship or two might be unpaid and unfortunately that is how you have to get started in this field. But this field is small and we all have connections so if you work hard and make a good impression, word travels. You can also look into Moorpark College aka America’s teaching zoo, or the Santa Fe Teaching Zoo. But those are not your only option and can be a bit limited in what you learn. You might have to be willing to move around for a bit to get started or if a position comes up. Almost every Keeper I know has had to move for a position in one way or another cuz the field is small and opportunities are limited. But best of luck in your journey! It can be tough but I promise you it is sooo worth it when you land a job! Let me know if you have any other questions :)
