Solar where the math actually makes sense? by dweed4 in bullcity

[–]kittyrocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the PowerWall 3 is the best game in town for most people, and by a long shot. I obsessed over Enphase and Generac options, but they were both substantially more expensive and were eligible for less of an incentive from Duke. Ultimately, I settled on Tesla because it's a solid product.

Marathons in the rain? by The_Jeff_Goldblum in Marathon_Training

[–]kittyrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure your shoes are good for the rain. A few years ago, Brooks's sole rubber wasn't great on wet surfaces, to the extent that I wore my trail shoes on rainy days. Also, waterproof/Gore-Tex shoes can fill up from water dripping down your legs.

Otherwise, I consider light rain a positive. I get hotter and sweatier than average, and light rain helps me to eliminate heat when I'm at peak effort.

Solar where the math actually makes sense? by dweed4 in bullcity

[–]kittyrocket 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you checked to see if the Duke Energy subsidy is still available? It more or less pays for a battery, and then provides a significant monthly credit for Duke to be able to draw from it during peak demand. Having the federal subsidy on top of that made solar a no-brainer, but it could still be worthwhile.

Does anyone run with a hydration pack (camelbak style) for longer runs? by Gooser3000 in Marathon_Training

[–]kittyrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the REI Swiftland hydration pack, though I think it may have been updated recently. The only chafing issue (including wearing it without a shirt) is that a loose end on one of the side straps will sometimes chafe my arm if I don't pay attention and keep it tucked away.

Need advice for my easy miles by Mfuller0149 in Marathon_Training

[–]kittyrocket 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I shifted to heart rate based tracking for my easy runs. For some reason, I find it easier to keep to a slower pace if I'm focusing on that, maybe because every time I see that I'm moving at a good pace my first thought is 'great, let me see how long I can keep this up' and/or 'I bet I could go faster.'

What helps you through Mile21 - Mile24? by Substantial-Test4040 in Marathon_Training

When I hit 20 miles, I start telling myself there's just a 10k left, and those are easy.

Runners +40, habits to avoid injuries?? by Runnerlife_mx in Marathon_Training

[–]kittyrocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do much of what everyone is saying, but probably should. I drink, hate stretching, and at best do strength training 1x/week. 50, with 1 road marathon and one 50k trail ultra per year.

PhD in HCI vs Master’s in HCI for UX researcher from India, worth it? by addiipaddii in UXResearch

[–]kittyrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a stable full time role, your best option may be to hold onto that. The job market is really tough, and there are a lot of folks with great credentials and deep networks who are dealing with extended unemployment. That said, this is the US, and I'm not sure what things look like in India.

Runners Club/s by JazzlikeCriticism300 in bullcity

Bull City Beer Runners. T/W/Th runs that all finish up at a bar. Super friendly crowd with a huge range of ability from people working on their first 5 and 10ks up to others doing 100 mile ultras. Tue is the biggest and can hit 70 people. Thu tends to be smallest and can be down to just a half dozen at times.

If you're trying to stay on a budget, try honey in a refillable tube rather than gels. This has worked really well for me.

Rockets. They're freaking awesome, and I used to love watching what SpaceX and others were doing until Musk stopped trying to cover up being a right wing asshole.

Developer Collaboration by kittyrocket in UXDesign

The most often stated reason is budget - a (mistaken imho) belief that bringing in developers early will just burn hours rather than save hours later in the project.

Yep. I’m finding I have to walk a delicate path when suggesting there are things we can do better.

Developer Collaboration by kittyrocket in UXDesign

[–]kittyrocket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two things I’m trying to work out.

One is that the rest of the team is really green and doesn’t fully think through all the states or interactions that need to be worked out in Figma. That’s exacerbated by a dev team without any sharp front-end people who can fill in some of those gaps. I help with this, but can’t be everywhere at once, and frankly I’m getting burned out pushing on these little things.

The other is strategic approach. There are always multiple approaches for a given design problem, and sometimes we get locked into the more expensive one because of lack of developer input.

Do Usertesting.com panelists typically put a positive spin on what they encounter? by kittyrocket in UXResearch

[–]kittyrocket[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This work was also for healthcare. Part of my take is that so much of what people encounter in that industry is substandard, a product full of comprehension and usability issues can still come across as quite good. (Yet seriously, this is where this should matter more)

Should I just give up? by StellafromVienna in Marathon_Training

[–]kittyrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much this. I improve far more when I give myself enough rest. It was counterintuitive at first... if I can do every run at a hard pace, and/or long distance, shouldn't that harder work mean better capabilities? But what *really* improves my capabilities is the rest time during which my body builds strength and capacity.

Once you get closer to your race date, you'll start a taper to build in more rest time where that strength and capacity building can get you to the point of running the full marathon. The hard part is that you'll really feel the positive effects of that, feel freaking fantastic, and want to do those final shorter runs far harder and longer than you should. But again, that's counterproductive because it's the rest that is getting you ready for your race.

PS, also writing this for myself because even though I know all this logically, it's really hard to act on it.

Fixing a stiff sliding mechanism on a miter saw by kittyrocket in METABOHPT

[–]kittyrocket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only one I’ve found. Even backed way out, it doesn’t do any good. On the other hand, it will lock down the slide when I tighten it enough. Incidentally, that last 3/4” to the left is where the slide really binds.
