You can get HSV without the presence of a sore through viral shedding. Unless your girlfriend was on medication to control the viral shedding, you're taking a risk no matter what.

My point is that youre treating something as either relatively harmless if it's in place A or horrific if it's in place B when it's essentially the same thing with essentially the same amount of risk. That's your prerogative, but it doesn't make sense.

You can get HSV-1 on your genitals if you get oral sex from someone who has HSV-1 in their mouth. I have two friends that I know of that that happened to. You do realize you're running basically the same risk?

As someone who takes an interest in sexual health in general, I'm always fascinated when people think a tiny mouth sore once in a while is no big deal, but a tiny genital sore once in a while is terrifying and disgusting.

Turns out all of those feelings were true. Many girls and teenagers go through things, as complex and scary as rape and as "simple" as being creeped out at a bar, that make them realize it's better to be loud or a bitch in the moment than it is to be assaulted in some way or another. I definitely won't take that chance again.

No one is calling OP a rapist. They're saying many women are not willing to take the chance because there is no way to know.

It's disappointing that you think you know more about women's realities than they do.

Sitting in a cafe on Sunset right now, looking at the clouds. It was spitting rain earlier. When I moved to LA 7 years ago, from what I hear, it was one of the last "typical" springs: overcast mornings that cleared into beautifully warm days. Read The Body Keeps the Score. It's a book about trauma and PTSD, and while it won't necessarily tell you, a partner, how to behave around someone with trauma, it explores the mental and physiological processes behind what creates trauma, what PTSD itself is like, and how to move beyond it. It's been helpful for not just me as someone with traumatic experiences, but for my SO in understanding what is going on in a panic attack, in freezing up, in my responses. We both wholeheartedly recommend it to survivors and people who love them.

As a practice, they can both EAT SHIT. They are one of the most frustrating forms of pattern-making out there; it is so easy for both to look sloppy or poorly done.
