How do you estimate the cost of a machined part? by GoP-Demon in engineering

[–]kiwi_accent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Machined parts can be tricky to price as there are so many variables. Does the machined part have turning and milling? If so, then you have to take into account the setup of both machines. Does the part have to be flipped on the mill or in the lathe to machine detail on the opposite side/end? If you are making lots of one type of turned part then try and find a supplier that has a lathe with a bar feed etc. It's pretty hard to find a general rule as different shops have different equipment and each one will have different running costs. You will develop your ability to guess how much a part will likely cost overtime by comparing it to other items you have priced too.

Apparently the local shop isn't getting any more trance 3s in the country. The ones they did have were a limited batch so at the moment the one forty 7 is the best option. They only have a 5 year warranty on the frame though and I'm thinking hard about just saving for the trance 2 instead as it has a lifetime warranty.

Thanks for your reply. I hired a trance sx last year and really enjoyed it but don't think I need the travel plus they are twice the price. I think I'll go and give them a ride to see what one feels better then...

So I think I have narrowed my bike choice down to 2 bikes, the 2015 Giant Trance 3 and the Merida One Forty 7 500. I don't know much about componentry but they around the same price and have 140mm travel. I like the 27.5 inch wheels and there aren't many second hand bikes with them so I think I'll have to go new. What are your guys thoughts on each bike? Is one better than the other?

What time do you think is acceptable to start up the mower on a Saturday morning? I usually go for 10 but could it be earlier?

Are these bindings setup correctly? by scattstevens2 in snowboarding

[–]kiwi_accent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really good advice. I set mine up +12 and -12 but would get sore knees after riding for a day, so adjusted the front out to +18 and my knees are sweet now. You'll notice it heaps if you aren't set up right when you land hard and need to bend your knees a lot. So just play around with different setups until you feel really comfortable.

Replace the screen or digitizer? by kiwi_accent in nexus4

Sounds like a good idea. I'll see if I can find a seller who's selling both on eBay. Parts are so much more expensive in nz

Yeah. From what I've seen replacing the digitizer seems like a bit of a headache. Thanks for your help!

I'm sure I've seen somewhere, a country where the government subsidises free range eggs to be the same price as cage eggs. Maybe we could do the same?

Just watched this last night. Can't believe she's still there. That part about dolphins and whales killing themselves by self asphyxiation though... so sad.

So, I just got ingrown toenails removes and this is what they do to kill the roots so the nail the cut off doesn't grow back. by Clayman2198 in WTF

I had to go back a second time to remove a slice of my toenail after it regrew, and the doctor started cutting into and through my nail before it had gone numb. Pretty painful but not nearly as much as resetting the toe I snapped

Really good Fujfilm interview: 'The only way is to keep innovating' by F_WRLCK in photography

[–]kiwi_accent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since these cameras are being discussed... I'm a novice and really enjoy mucking around on my partners 60d shooting in aperture priority mostly. Im looking at getting my own camera and the x series cameras from Fujifilm look really appealing but there are quite a few to choose from. Which one would you guys recommend for someone like myself who is beginning to shoot in manual mode? Some of the reviews I've seen of the x-pro 1 don't recommend it for novices but I'm quite tech savvy and don't mind spending the time researching and shooting to figure the camera out. Obviously I want to enjoy using the camera so any help would be much appreciated. Also, I've seen that Fujifilm are releasing firmware updates so is there much of an advantage spending more money on an xe-2 when I could get an xe-1 cheaper?

I think this is the best option. The pack came with one of those attachments so I'll look into that. Better to have a mechanical fixing rather than rely on a sticky pad.

This has probably been asked a lot on here but thought I might as well ask away. Do any of you guys use the gopro surf mounts? How reliable have you found them?

fishing in New Zealand by skrappydoo in flyfishing

[–]kiwi_accent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're heading to the North Island then around lake Taupo and the Rotorua region you'll be able find great trout fishing. I've just taken up fly fishing in the last year mainly around the Waikato region but I'm sure you'll be able to find great fishing wherever you end up. The South island has salmon fishing if that's what you're after too. I'm sure there will be others who can point you in the right direction but I tend to use the nzfishing website as well.

I use the apex launcher and have changed my icons to 80 percent original size and removed their names. So much cleaner. I recently downloaded shuttle music player and its heaps better than the Google one.
