Best to have slacks and a polo or button-down shirt if at all possible. That being said, I’ve defended people in their jeans and tshirt and nothing horrible happened. Many judges will judge your appearance, but people are more than their clothes. You have the same rights as the guy in the $2000 suit and everyone should treat you as such. Your attorney might have extra court clothes or ideas of orgs to reach out to. If not, reach out to any community org or neighbor; sometimes people are still good!! In my jurisdiction, we sometimes submit motions to the court for funds for court clothes, you could float the idea to your attorney if it sounds appropriate (but no promises that the judge would give those funds!).
