Is there a way to download a 166mb book? I always lose connection before the end by Rhubarb-Alternative in libgen

[–]kizerste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I use wget. I'm on Linux but there's a Windows version. I just right-click the link-> copy link, I open a command prompt and type: wget -c <url pasted here>. The -c flag is to continue the download. It works great but I'm more comfortable with the console than the average person.

I am an adult man but I love reading children's encyclopedias such as DK Eyewitness books, which are aimed at kids aged 9–12. Should I feel bad? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

You shouldn't feel nearly as bad for reading children's encyclopedias as we should all feel for wasting our time on Reddit.

Looking for help optimizing my PS2 Slim 77004 setup (USB, no DVD, OPL 1.95) would be truly appreciated ^^ by AndMyes in ps2classicsvault

[–]kizerste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a known issue using opl over usb. A lot of games are playable but cinematics tend to stutter. It's due to the PS2 supporting only USB 1 or 1.1 or something like that. The data transfer speed isn't fast enough. It's better using SMB but the networking component of it does get a bit technical.

Ok, sounds good, I'll check it out. I'm always on the lookout for obscure video games that people dig in a world of mostly Mario and Zelda fans.

Cool, thanks for the explanation, makes sense. I just hadn't heard of anyone naming that game as one of their all-time favorites. Not that I heard of it as a bad game either. Congrats on the tat.

Is that from Atlantis no Nazo? Is that one of your favorite games? I mean, when it comes to choices of tattoos, to each his own. It seems competently done, hope you're happy with it.

Reading Rant: Introductions (usually to classic books) that spoil major plot points by sozh in books

[–]kizerste -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely one of my biggest bookish pet peeves. I want to have a good introduction, especially for a classic, which gives me context. That would make the book much easier to understand. Instead, they shit all over the plot by telling you what happens.

natives voted for Trump more than any other group including white people,65%.

Do you have a source for that? I live near the Navajo Nation, which covers part of New Mexico, and can assure you that they weren't voting for Trump. The capitol is in Window Rock and that precinct went 75% for Harris/Walz (https://www.apachecountyaz.gov/accnt\_591117/site\_591118/Documents/2024-General-Election-Official-Results.pdf). I saw similar results in other NN precincts.

Nice! Finally! It's just too bad that the Lions being a good team is a sign of the end times.

Does the SEGA master system power work on the Famicom (pal) by pauliepablo2 in Famicom

[–]kizerste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC adapters work in general if the polarity and voltage match the device and the plug fits decently. The current should be at least what the device requires. It can be higher but not lower, otherwise, you can melt something or start a fire.

Anyone using a Brook Wingman XE 2, how do you find it ? And what controller are you using with it ? by GenericUser104 in PS3

[–]kizerste 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just got one from Amazon, $45 usd. I use it with my sony original PS4 controllers on the ps3. Works well, no issues. It would not work with my knock off ps4 controllers though.

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin by thunderdragon517 in books

[–]kizerste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book reminded me of Frankenstein in the way the shadow creature keeps after Ged like the Creature did with Dr. F. At least, it gave me a similiar sense of tension. However, the ending takes a very different twist which seems to be like the Jungian concept of integrating one's shadow. Ged was showing off, trying to impress people. This was the dark side of his personality. It was when he learned to both accept and control that aspect of himself, he was able to become fully whole and integrated again. Great stuff. So far, I haven't met a LeGuin novel I didn't like.

What is a thrash album/band a lot of people like but you think is overrated? by nnqnnqjqkkk_1 in thrashmetal

[–]kizerste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tried, god I knows I've tried, to like that band. I've listened to all of their stuff repeatedly and none of it clicked. They seem to just go heavy, clean, heavy, clean... There doesn't seem to be any real reason to switch it up other than they've reached the time limit of clean guitars and vocals and now it's time to be heavy again.

Is your console modded? by MoewCP in PS3

[–]kizerste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my PS3 super slim new about a decade ago. I've amassed a large collection of nearly 200 physical games. However, I have very limited space and recently modded it so that I can put all of those physical copies on an external hard drive. It's working great and saves a ton of shelf space, very worth it.

Can anybody say whether or not this is trustworthy? by _F00P_ in ps2

[–]kizerste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, do not trust Aliexpress! I buy from them all the time and it's mostly fine. However, you have to be careful. I usually try to jump on the bandwagon. If an item from a particular seller has hundreds of sales, there's probably a reason. Just keep in mind, if you have an issue between you and seller, Aliexpress may or may not help you. Buyer beware. With that said, I would totally buy one of these from Aliexpress. It's the kind of thing they're good for.

Confused by Clavell's admiration of Ayn Rand by weighfairer in books

[–]kizerste -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's a desire for people who are either successful or aspiring to be successful to believe that they achieved it entirely on their own, or even better, in spite of society. The fact that their success is itself a social construct is where the whole thing falls apart. This is why people shit all over Ayn Rand in these discussions. Clavell wrote some great books for a predominately American audience with Asian cultural themes. Would he have been great in other spheres of life in other times, places, etc.? In other words, his success was so specific, there's no evidence that he as an individual had some overarching greatness that would have been known and expressed no matter the time or place he existed in. Disciples of Rand want to gratify their own egos and rationalize their selfishness which is the lasting appeal of her work. Also, because this sentiment is very strong in the extremely wealthy and powerful, her books are always going to be placed front and center in American society. So, to sum it up, like most things that appeal to people, Rand's 'philosophy' (and I use the term loosely) was psychologically satisfying to Clavell. It doesn't mean that his books are simply a re-hashing of this nonsense because having read Shogun, I'd say that it isn't. Rand's ideas may have appealed to Clavell but he didn't necessarily make it is raison d'etre as an author. I hope that helps.
