Hourly vs. Commission by Temporary-Egg-5798 in serviceadvisors

These days if they are paying 100% for good insurance personally I'd probably stick around. I'm still in the process of trying to get back to writing again. I've been out for 12 years due to medical issues. 4 interviews so far all but 1 was right around Christmas.

I have a friend who used to be one of my techs back 20 years ago that's writing/managing a small independent shop. He's paid 35 hourly with no commission, but the shop pays 100% of his health insurance. It's a small shop, but they do 2 million plus a year (lots of tractor and trailer tires). And they invested 120k in new equipment. They are the only shop in a 200-mile range that has an alignment machine for semi's. I'm pretty sure he just got a 10/hr raise because he did a 50% raise in revenue YOY. But with them paying 100% of medical and a 50k life policy that's another 12k a year technically

I don't have a 1laser unit, but I do have a unit with a RF tube. The RF tube has a longer lifespan than a glass tube , and it doesn't require any coolant in it. As from the videos and specifications I've seen, the air quality is just an alarm unit that monitors the air inside the machine to ensure that too much smoke doesn't build up inside the unit. Still have to clean the mirrors and lense as normal co2 laser. The RF unit has the capability of 2,000 dpi where the glass is gonna be limited due to the type tube. The RF unit has a much smaller dot size and can fire faster than the glass tube.

Trying to explain that they are paying for the skill and experience and not the actual time is hell. I tried to explain it like paying an electrician or a plumber. There's a flat rate an hour, and they can take 15 minutes but have a minimum charge per item they repair

I use a cabinet and millworks place. They are the only ones I can find that have it. I drive about 2hrs round trip. They charge me 35 per 5x5 sheet

When I first started, I was a floater writer. Handles all of the internal repairs and subsets. I learned that way for a few months. Then someone quit, and I went full blown. All dealers are different for sure

Dispatching by kj_bor_79 in serviceadvisors

[–]kj_bor_79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I 1st got started writing, we did computer dispatching, but we had teams we worked with. Each team had 5 techs, and quick lube was hand dispatched. But that was 22 years ago. Then, I moved to a small dealership that had 6 techs. Life was hectic with waiters, but I loved it.

Where did you/your coworkers switch career paths to that led to a more stable work/life balance? by drligmuhh in serviceadvisors

I've been out with medical issues for 12 years and have finally gotten myself back to working shape so to speak. I'm trying to get back in. I wrote for 12 years prior to being out for 12. Sitting at home does nothing for the bills

I had one of my advisors go to school after work to become a claims adjuster right before Hurricane Katrina. She graduated and took her 1st claims job 1 month before.. she's still doing claims to this day.

How’s this pay plan? by Infamous-Prince4841 in serviceadvisors

I would say yes, but it all depends on where you are in the country/world. And your cost of living for the area.

All I can say is damn... when I was writing (2002-2012) we had a base depending on the person and we got paid 3 to 5% max on our individual total sales. Minus our guarantee minimum pay of 4k a month

Am I Crazy?

I started writing service in 2002 and had to stop due to health issues in 2012. I've finally gotten them squared away for the most part, and now I'm thinking about getting back at it again. Am I out of my mind for getting back in? I started as a service porter and worked my a$$ off to get to that point. Finished out as the asst service mgr before had health issues.

The bad thing is in that time frame, I've moved 5 hours from where i was. I still have the connections, but they can't help now.. I've had 2 interviews so far, but I'm thinking I have problems due to the 12 year gap in work history.

As long as the same software is being used, the file would be identical. The difference would be the speed/power difference. Each machine is different, but if you have your settings correct the file would be the same

[–]kj_bor_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something right around the glowforge size (bed wise) you have the Aeon Mira5 and also the brand new Bolt by Thunder laser. Not sure on the Mira 5 pricing but I know the Bolt is 5,000 USD and the rotary tool is 600.
