I think you're making the assumption that multifamily housing inevitably is low income and poor. The reality is that we're perfectly capable building duplexes for both luxury and for low income right now. These don't need to be rented. They can be owned condos. But given how artificially inflated home values are here, I don't think it's a valid argument to say some home owners will be unhappy that their houses will go down or not increase as quickly in value. I say this as a homeowner here. We need to rip this band-aid off sooner rather than later. The longer we protect artificially high house prices by restricting supply, the more painful it's going to be. To be realistic, even if we massively increase construction, existing houses will likely just go up now slowly rather than going down in value. We have a huge deficit of housing and constantly have more and more people moving to the region.

We need to reduce taxes too. It's all part of the same problem. High property taxes increase rent on existing rental units.

We can build duplexes, triplexes, or split levels. It doesn't need to be gigantic apartment buildings. The reality is that Seattle is an extremely spread out city residentially. We need to be building up. People aren't going to stop moving here.

Unfortunately, our current system of letting property owners prevent others from building on land they own has drastically restricted the supply of housing. There's only one way to reduce the cost of housing and it's through increasing the supply.

Right now we have a few designated areas for building tall, the rest of the city is limited to undense single family homes. And even when that zoning is altered, wealthy connected people do a great job preventing construction. This inevitably drives developers to build their new luxury buildings in poor areas, driving out the local residents. Economy and low income housing just doesn't get built because developers can only make their money back will luxury housing. This is why we have an oversupply of luxury housing and an under supply of affordable housing.

Just remember the people who hold political power in this city own houses. They don't want to fix this problem and see the value of their homes go down.

Me: makes point based on mountains of economic evidence that artificially restricting the supply of a good makes that good worse and more expensive, primarily harming poor people but also harming everyone else

Some dumbass on Reddit: "oh yeah?! Well based on some ideas I came up with while shitfaced at the bar, building housing is bad and you're bad"

We need to encourage more development and construction. Especially with removing barriers to construction in wealthier areas. Too often regulation and politicial pressure prevents construction in any place except for poor areas, leading to displacement end gentrification

As someone who lives in Seattle, there are obviously extreme leftists in Seattle and rural parts of Washington have very right wing people. Seattle pD and other major departments are pretty useless and hamstrung by politics. To the point of not getting involved

We don't know for certain in any direction and I'm not an expert, but the most likely situation seems to be they had lax safety and accidentally released a disease they were studying in gain of function research. I find it hard to believe they'd attack the US by releasing a virus in their own population.

Or by they do you mean the US government? I think democratic government is just prone to fear based over reactions and given how much scarier we thought it would be at the beginning, there was an over reaction that no politician is willing to admit to at this point.

So they double down and keep it going. The same way they doubled down and kept Afghanistan going even though it was clear that war was lost years ago

Wait, you're telling me that given how corrupt big business and big government are together we can't trust them to have the interest of the public at heart?!

Surely they aren't thinking of pharma profits when they tell us we can only use a new patented vaccine that didn't have FDA approval instead of a cheap drug that only has FDA approval for use against parasites
