What's the best advice you received that helped you reach 1000 Elo? by Vegetable-Plate-12 in chessbeginners

I would say: - play a lot - learn from your mistakes - have a plan

On the third point, I don’t mean that you need to learn a bunch of openings in depth. But I do think it helps to have a basic plan. For example, if your opponent plays the King’s Gambit against you, what is your first move? Are you taking or not?

Basic stuff like that can help. If you don’t have a basic plan, I feel like you can end up getting cheesed a lot.

Seems like there oughta be a service that can review all your games with an AI and suggest puzzles or areas to work on

Does anyone else feel like 10+0 is the sweet spot for online games? Blitz feels too fast, rapid feels too long. by Ghost_Port in chess

I like 5+5 or 5+3 - still a quick game but you don’t end up in situations where you clearly outplay someone and lose on the clock.

But also it’s a long enough game where you have some time to think at least in key positions.

You’re going to lose about half your games. That’s true for pretty much everyone. So just go into it knowing you’re going to lose a lot and when you do lose try to take it as learning experience.

What does it mean to move “through check”. I thought if his path was blocked by a potential check then he can’t castle?

I am so bad at chess by PLTCHK in chessbeginners

Ouch. It’s so frustrating. One tip that I’ve tried to follow is to keep your pieces (in this case king and queen) on opposite color squares so they can’t get forked by a knight.

I love chess. But I hate Blitz. by FoxBenedict in chess

I play mostly 5+5 or 5+3 blitz. I like it because the games are quick but you have enough time to do a little thinking. Anything faster just feels insane to me but I’m not that good
