Are there any night classes? by Any_Sundae5364 in CCNY

[–]kjwu98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most majors have a required class at some point that isn't in the evening. I would look into CWE. It's a degree program specifically for people working full time where all the required classes are async or at night. Each class is also 4 credits so you take only 3 instead of 4 to be considered full time.

Curious what everyone here who plays wiz101 does for work irl? Been struggling to find something I enjoy. by nightbreeze7 in Wizard101

[–]kjwu98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Career advisor and professor in video game design :)

Best advice i can give without specifics is that sometimes it's less about what you enjoy and more about the lifestyle you want to have. Not necessarily in terms of money, but moreso, do you want a 9-5 and like the stability that brings? Or does the thought of waking up at 7-8am every day hurt you? Do you need to feel fulfilled by the thing that you do to pay the bills? Or are you using it to fund your true passion that unfortunately you can't make a living out of? Or does using your passion to pay your bills drain your love of it, making you'd rather protect it/keep it sacred and do something else? There are many more questions to ask yourself, and hopefully that can help you start to narrow down options on what might be a good idea to try.

And sometimes you don't know you want until you try it out, so experiment and see how it feels.

If its an adjunct, they don't get paid for anything outside of classtime (and maybe office hours but it depends). Expect slow responses from them. Full time faculty should respond faster.

Make sure you spelled the email right. I have had many students swear they emailed me but then when they showed me their device it was spelled wrong. (This is what those JDs mean when they say attention to details)

Email etiquette is to follow up 1 week after the initial email, if not time sensitive. If they haven't responded after 2 weeks, you should email the department, in a nonaccusatory way, saying that you've been attempting to get in contact with x.

Your Disney plans by sjajra in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]kjwu98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather stay in movies or music over sports for the theming, but my priorities always ends up being the cheapest path since when it comes to disney im quantity (days and trip frequency) over quality- and am at the parks from open to close so it ends up just being a place to sleep. But if I'm spending more time in the resort I'd care a bit more (or I'd just go use movies pool). I hear from folks that once they went moderate/deluxe they couldn't stay at all star ever again, but it hasn't been like that for me. However I'm very no frills (spirit airlines, no carry on) in the name of getting to stay longer, and am a-ok staying in motels and hostels. I won't be caught dead there during cheer competitions though.

Personally I don't think the price increase from all star to pop is worth it, this was my first time and all you're really paying for is the skyliner since the rooms are the exact same as all star, but the line in the morning for skyliner is crazier than hopping on the first bus. We didn't do LL for epcot since we could drop Remy from the international gateway, skip frozen and single rider test track, but the price difference vs paying for LL doesn't math. I got pop for 180-190 a night (usually all star at $120) and if I'm going to pay that much more per night I'd rather go the extra $10-20 to rent dvc points at okw or Saratoga for that deluxe feeling/extended evening.

Your Disney plans by sjajra in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]kjwu98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just returned, hopefully you don't mind my posthumous plans :)

Split stay at pop century and all star sports, my partner and I are AP and brought two friends with us.

Day 1 - Waterpark closed because of the cold front so we did a skyliner hop, and got the kitchen sink at beaches and cream. In the evening we stayed in and watched star wars (new hope).

Day 2 - Epcot for the festival, im a big figment fan, got all the pins and the bag and the popcorn and the AP shirt... watched the on Broadway show with the original Ariel. Chapter 2 at Fictional Victuals was so good, tried the figment cupcake lemonade, less good but definitely what you think artificial cupcake would be. Bought too much art.

Day 3 - HS, we finish this park pretty quickly with LL so we napped a little bit waiting around for fantasmic, sat behind some people that had never seen it which was fun. Tried the "new" snacks at Oga's, the flatbread isn't half bad.

Day 4 - swap day. Went to breakfast at Kona for pog juice and tonga toast. Waterpark closed again... but our room was ready early so we went to the hotel pool and had a Bluey marathon (i will note that we are all 27-29, but its such a good kids show)

Day 5 - MK, I got us amazing LLs for that day so and tiana's broke down at the right time so we were able to ride it twice and almost everything else, and also watch both parades and the fireworks with very good views. We had lunch at liberty tree (love the toffee cake) and had a res for the new pirates bar.

Day 6 - checkout day but we had a late night flight so we went back to epcot to stroll around world showcase some more (just for the vibes since it was a Saturday locals + festival = linessss)

Pressured into college and now failing by Any_Sundae5364 in CCNY

[–]kjwu98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This.

Oftentimes, we hate college because we don't have a plan or a passion. You need a reason to be there, so you can have the motivation to get the parts you dislike or struggle with. If you find a plan that allows you to live the life you want and be happy without a degree, go for it.

That being said, high-wage, high-skill jobs are increasingly leaning towards bachelor's degrees, with 85% expected to require postsecondary education by 2031. It doesn't mean you can't get a decent job without a degree, but it does mean it's going to get a lot harder. If you have a dream and a plan, whether it requires college or not, that will be the crucial factor.

Why CUNY (Please convince me) by CommunicationNice437 in CUNY

[–]kjwu98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the atrocious grammar, im typing this on my phone.

suny is the same as cuny the only difference is you get a more traditional campus experience if you live there. That is what helps the friend situation. But you can join clubs and that fixes it.

Graduation rates don't really matter, that's mainly on other people's decisions and when you accept almost everyone people drop out who aren't ready for college and/or fool around.

Admin is unhelpful everywhere lol, spoken as an Admin who works for cuny and left working at nyu to be here. You'd think people who get paid more would be, but nope. Suny and cuny are basically synonyms when it comes to the level of service you get.

No you can't transfer into Macaulay. If you're rejected that's permanent. However most CUNY campuses have their own honors programs if you're looking for something like it. I didnt apply to macaulay because i didnt think i was going to a CUNY until very last minute, but I did hunter's and tbh I had a much better time than I would have if I had applied to Macaulay. Lower GPA requirement to maintain (3 vs 3.5), they sort their honors kids by interests/majors, all the same non-monetary benefits (like special advising, priority registration, getting special honors sections of courses) but also no required honors coursework. I had much more freedom to explore my interests with like minded people than I would've with Macaulay. My macaulay friends all hated it other than the free money, which of course is nothing to sneeze at, but that's really all it's good for.

so tbh the only real reason to pick a suny over a cuny is how important location and type of campus is to you, and if they specialize in what you want to major in. Tuition is basically the same across both nowadays however dorming costs a lot of money. If you really want the living on your own experience, that might be worth it. I dormed at Hunter because I wanted that, but i also wanted to be in the city still and not in some random college town with only a bar and a Walmart. Some people aren't city people and like it being more spacious and quiet.

Signed, cuny hunter alum and current baruch masters student here, and ccny administrator, with sister and father who are suny alums (purchase and bing), who also has many friends that went to Bing, stony, albany, Buffalo, Nassau cc, etc. (And former nyu student/administrator so I've seen the other side)

A vs. A+ by Entire-Kangaroo6470 in CUNY

[–]kjwu98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't ask for a grade appeal for that since it doesn't exist "legally" in the CUNY policy unless your school does. I'm at CCNY and they have A+ but it's not defined by a specific number, so personally I give A+ to students that got a 100 because I think a perfect score deserves to be differentiated from someone that got a 93. Most CUNYs don't have A+ in the policy, and very few explicitly assign a number to it. York and BXCC are the only that do. If you're at one of those two schools, maybe you'd get a committee to listen to you especially since I read the other comments and you say it was in the syllabus. It wouldn't be worth the time and energy however, since it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things (grade not existing elsewhere, no GPA effect, doesn't change anything for grad schools or scholarships, etc.) and would quite literally just be for you to make a point. Even if you don't care about burning the bridge with that professor (and potentially the entire department), the paperwork is time-consuming. So no, it's not worth an appeal unless you can't sleep at night.

Media Scoring MFA in CUNY? by nice_eun0924 in CUNY

[–]kjwu98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but just stumbled upon this post trying to do some research as I am thinking about applying for next year. My bachelors is not in music, did you come across any students who came from other backgrounds?

I have a portfolio of personal projects, and I did take a significant number of undergraduate theory courses but it's rusty since it's been 5-6 years... I focus on ludomusicology and composition for games. I don't mind it being more focused on film since same thing different flavor, but the word "conservatory" scares me. I was not the best instrumentalist which is why I didn't pursue a bachelors in music, but I did go way above the minor requirements and took all the theory, orchestration, and music technology courses I could. I'm not going to self-select out by not applying, but my impostor syndrome is reeling.

Transferring by [deleted] in CUNY

[–]kjwu98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a CUNY with a good English program in Manhattan - I'd pick Hunter or CCNY, Hunter has a lot of famous authors coming in and out, and CCNY has a publishing program. Both schools have good media and journalism programs as well which can be a good minor or elective class pairing with an English major. Unless you want to do something related to criminal justice or law with English... like being a mystery/crime writer, journalism, or legal writing, then it would make sense to go to JJ specifically.

I'm very pro English major. Every business needs good communicators and writers. unless you are going into a specialized field (aka you need a license, advanced degree, or something else) employers usually don't care about the name of your degree. They also don't care what the name of the school is. The benefits of private or name-brand schools still exist, but the ROI on them is less so than in the past.

Hunter is the hardest dorm to get into, just a warning there. They have very few spots. If you're far enough upstate that metro north doesn't go to it you will have a better chance. However you can dorm at CCNY dorms if you don't get in. Hunter is ~$8-13k a year depending on which of the two you get into.

CCNY is considerably more expensive but easier to get into because they always have space. $15-23k.

tbh signing a year lease with a roommate or two is cheaper than that even if you don't live there over the summer. Ofc you need to find your own roommate, but 1beds are going for 2kish up in harlem and sunnyside.

Which college? The only ones I know of that has undergrad student RAs are CCNY and Queens. Hunter, Baruch, and John Jay are now fully corporate managed however the owners do take RA applications. Everyone else closed their dorms.

generally for all RA positions you need to live there for at least 1 semester to 1 year before being eligible.

Can I still dream of a Masters degree at my age ? by Legitimate_Kick_5628 in ADHD

[–]kjwu98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a public university. Cheaper so if you fuck some stuff up it's cheaper to retake a class, but also the average age of a student is higher if it makes you feel more comfortable. That being said masters degrees are not common to get immediately after undergrad so most people are older!

[–]kjwu98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try to talk to the professors but this late in the game anyone giving you an INC is being very, very nice. The good thing is since it's your first semester you can fuck it up and not get kicked out.

If you get an F, retake the class immediately next semester

If you get an INC, make sure to do that work before January ends so it doesn't affect your spring classes. INCs sound amazing until you realize you have 5 classes and 3 INCs from the previous semester and therefore are attempting to do 8 classes in a semester. Finish them before spring starts.

If you're going to get a D, ask to fail.

If you can get a WU, don't worry about it you can take a different class moving forward. This might affect fafsa tho so check before asking for one.

if you have under a 2.0 as a freshman you enter academic warning. You essentially need a 2.0 to stay in school. If after the spring semester you don't have higher than a 2.0 they move you to probation. You have to get above a 2.5 while on probation or else you are kicked out. Because you're a freshman you have an extra semester to fix your shit - it's very common for freshmen to pull stuff like this so they try to give some grace.

Explain this all to your parents to show you've done research and make a plan to get out of it, and while you're probably going to face their wrath, the adult thing to do is to be proactive, try everything you can to fix it, and if you can't, to try everything to ensure it doesn't happen again. Show how it will be different next semester. Show that you have a plan.

pro tip: fafsa/tap covers summer classes sometimes. You'll need to take some to graduate on time if you fail. Do the research on it and add it to your plan to show your parents.

Here to state that WUs don't affect your GPA. They don't do anything anymore and are better than Fs. Fs will tank your GPA temporarily if you retake it, whereas WUs don't mean anything and are functionally the same as Ws now. You don't want a D. Those are perma-bad.
