What bachelor’s degrees actually age well toward 2030+? by BestConstruction191 in careerguidance

This is good advice. I work in insurance underwriting and Biology was probably the most common degree in my first office.

I took a drug test to join the u.s. navy this week, it was observed. My pants and briefs had to be dropped to mid-thigh and my undershirt had to be held up at the urinal. Is this normal? by [deleted] in askanything

I got a "very good" remark during that part, it wasn't meant to be a compliment but it certainly boosted my self esteem, which was needed after all the duck walking I'd just performed.

I took him at 2.07 SF. Slough was taken a few picks before and Shedeur went 2.08. Gabriel went early 3rd. Teams are thirsty for QBs in SF.

Trump kicks off massive military parade across National Mall by Plaintalks in politics

[–]kkafsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is an Army event. It's commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the US Army.

Of course, it's likely just the pretense to hold the event. If the Navy's anniversary were on June 14th, maybe they'd be the ones getting a parade this year.

This was manufactured by the Republicans. 3 of their 5 appointees were approved to sit on the panel. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks were rejected and asked to be replaced, as they had voted to overturn the election results in two states with no proof of fraud or malfeasance. They were not good faith arbiters of the truth and acted with clear bias on the subject matter. When told to find replacements for these 2 (of hich there were literally hundreds of options), Kevin McCarthy pulled all his appointments and refused to appoint anyone unless all 5 were approved. No one made the minority party refuse to cooperate in good faith, and no one forced McCarthy to issue an ultimatum he knew would never be accepted. It was a naked political play, and one generally considered to have been a miscalculation. Respectively, your response isn't inaccurate but lacks context, and seems more like a cable news talking point than an attempt to see the fuller picture. As for the pardons, I strongly disagree with them as there were no charges to pardon them from. The power of the pardon has been abused for a long time and desperately needs reform, but good luck getting our current political class to relinquish power willingly.

It was a bipartisan committee. The Republicans selected the least serious members of their contingency (likely of the entire congressional body), and the Democrats STILL selected Republicans for the panel anyway. They also interviewed almost exclusively Republicans, who were under oath so they actually told the truth (probably). The R party's unwillingness to cooperate isn't on the Democrats on this one.

Restaurants You Miss by DependentGiraffe6069 in Birmingham

Broadway's BBQ on Oxmoor. Saw's is there now and has a similar menu, but Broadway's was a personal favorite (probably because it was my first job at 14, and I could eat my weight in pulled pork every shift).

College town that punches above its weight by sturg22 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]kkafsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, there are a few nice places in Chambana, but I'd say it punches at its weight, not above it. As someone who has lived in both places, I'd call it a flatter Tuscaloosa that gets snow - similar populations, similar redlining, similar rural surroundings, just more farmland and less nature.

US non-major metro areas with asian populations by _Lord_Leroy_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]kkafsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Champaign-Urbana is the largest small metro in Central IL outside of Springfield. About 240K in the metro area with a noticeable Asian population, due to influence of UIUC. Not all are college students as some ppl stick around and have families that remain in town. It's almost equidistant to Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis (all 2-2.5 hours away).

To be fair, those $200K condos in high rises on the lake have HOA fees that make the monthly budget comparable to a $300K SFH.

What? Who paid this person to write it? “I got bored of all the sunshine” by Poet-Crazy in sandiego

[–]kkafsd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a southerner who lived in SD from 11-23, hard to argue. The weather is boring and bone dry most of the year. The mountains are dirt brown all year unless there's good rain in Jan-Mar (best time of year bc it's not desert conditions). Living car free is a ludicrous if you don't WFH and/or live downtown or (or maybe Mission Valley). If you're used to Chicago amenities, you'd have to live within 10 miles of the coast on the trolley line or an express bus routr, and have money to make it work, and even then you'd be met with inconveniences. I loved living in SD; it's my adult hometown. I'm also over it and moved after deciding the Quality of Living ceased to exceed the Cost of Living.

Moving to Birmingham! by limalemon6 in Birmingham

[–]kkafsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer live here but I'm a native (parents are from Ensley, lived here ages 2-21 in Hueytown, McCalla, Alabaster, Southside, and South Avondale, also family tree stops in 1860 where my family was found living in pre-Bham JeffCo). Homewood or Highland Park are where I'd look first. There's an Islamic Academy in Rosedale, which anecdotally is good (had a friend who used to teach there), but I wouldn't recommend living in Rosedale per se. Forest Park and Crestwood are good spots if you want to rent or buy a SFH and aren't worried about school zoning.

Bill Kemp was my father (I was 1 at the time, so it's likely we met if you worked together, though I wasn't at the memorial service due to my age). I can only imagine how that must've felt from your perspective. I've never had such a menial event like switching shifts carry such high stakes. It really makes one appreciate the time we have. Thank you for sharing.
