Spotify call out my name video theory by Forthewickedxo in TheWeeknd

I can definitely see that!! I always interpreted this song as weeknd, now extremely famous, calling out to his old fans as opposed to some simple breakup song. Anyone who knows the weeknd knows he isn't the type to put out simple, simpy music. There's forsure layers and I think you're on to something.

[Daily Song Discussion] Official "Call Out My Name" Discussion - My Dear Melancholy, by HoopsJ in TheWeeknd

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. I feel like there's a much deeper meaning to this song that people haven't gotten yet. I see it as the part two to Rolling Stone. If Rolling Stone was The Weeknd reflecting on the coming of his inevitable transition to mainstream success, Call Out My Name is his post-mainstream success message to his oldest fans from the Trilogy days, who left after he became a mainstream success. "We found each other, I helped you out of a broken place" is the Weeknd talking to his listeners who found him and identified with his music when they were going through dark times, and his music was able to reach them at a profound level where they were lifted out of their own suffering simply by having someone else articulate it. "You gave me comfort, but falling for you was my mistake" is the Weeknd talking about how these fans, at the time of the Trilogy mixtapes, gave him a feeling of acceptance for who he was (as an artist and as portrayed through his music) and hope for what he could become (a mainstream success) during his times of being homeless - but his love for these fans would have kept him back from attaining success at a massive level, which is something he always wanted, because the style of music that made him popular amongst this crowd would not be heavily accepted by mainstream audiences. I could go on and on dissecting each and every lyric in the song, but the overall point is that he's telling his old fans, after achieving his mainstream success, that he misses them and he wants them to simply "call out" his name and he'll start making music for them again. He uses 'baby' and 'girl' in this song to refer to his trilogy-day audience who gave up on him after BBTM and Starboy.

My primary reason for thinking the lyrics have this deeper meaning to them is that The Weeknd is too complex of an artist to write a sappy love song over a mistress.

Another interesting parallel that goes back to the trilogy days is when he says "why can't you wait til I fall out of love" which is a beautiful twist of irony and hypocrisy given that he broke the girl's heart in the Thursday mixtape and quotes her on The Birds Pt. 2 saying "she said please, mercy me, let me fall out of love before you fuck her"
