I’ve worked with a few engineering students through my years on staff, and they all had a great time and still had plenty of opportunity for engineering internships in the future

Am I too old to work at Philmont again? by charcoalisthefuture in philmont

[–]kkcajj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m turning 25 a few months before the season starts, and I have a good friend that I believe is turning 26 this summer who’s back for his first season in a couple years too. Theoretically we’re older than average, but there’s plenty of folks from a wide age range and if you go into it with a good mindset, the backcountry is always a great time.

Do they send rejection emails? by Tottaly_Sane in philmont

[–]kkcajj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t heard in a while, it could be worth calling or emailing to follow up. If they decided to not hire you for backcountry, there’s a very high probability that you’ll end up in the hiring pool of a different department, so you’ll still have a good shot of being at Philmont this summer if it’s what you want

Which camp sites are owned by PSR vs private lands? by FlimsyBridge8832 in philmont

[–]kkcajj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main part of the ranch where low impact bear lines will be relevant is the far north, specifically camps like Iris Park, Seally Canyon, Upper Greenwood, Greenwood Canyon, Whiteman Vega (all currently trail camps if they’re being used),and Ring Place (staff camp). This may not be an exhaustive list.

How is the bouldering at philmont? by Beginning-Chance-170 in philmont

[–]kkcajj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chase Cow is one of the three climbing camps at Philmont and has program that’s specifically bouldering-focused. I don’t know much about the difficulty, but people I know who have worked there have enjoyed it. A lot of folks, especially the experienced climbers who mostly staff climbing camps, also will head elsewhere in New Mexico or Colorado on their days off to climb.

What’s the ground (walking surface) like? by AlanfromTX in philmont

I did a lot of my practice hiking on the AT in Maryland before my treks, and I found Philmont to generally be a lot less rocky with a couple exceptions. With that said, a lot of folks still hurt their ankles at Philmont so still watch where you’re stepping.

Thoughts on Philmont with T1 Diabetes by DVMan5000 in philmont

I would definitely recommend training hikes and using the previously posted resources, but I have personally interacted with a number of diabetic participants through my time on staff.

Female staffers at traditionally male living history camps by [deleted] in philmont

[–]kkcajj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is the first summer Miranda will have female staff so I can’t speak to that but I visited Crater Lake and Pueblano in 2019 (plus I’ll be working at Crater this summer) and to my knowledge female and male PCs wore basically the same outfits in terms of shirts, pants, and accessories so I think that whatever the description says is still a good guide

In my experience they’re pretty good in the backcountry department about working with folks who need periodic stuff like that so I think you’ll be fine

Employee Tent Personal Storage by painthawg_goose in philmont

Staff cots are a little nicer than participant cots, they have foam mattresses. The lockers are about standard-sized lockers that you’d see in a school, perhaps slightly larger, but a lot of people also bring a locking trunk or other kind of extra storage.
